New educator wellbeing: Part 1
In this episode hear from Growth Team officer Chloe Hosking about wellbeing for new educators.Something that you might find handy as a teacher in your first five years of teaching (or at any stage of your career) is getting to know the SSTUWA’s current Agreement and Award, which can be found at sstuwa.org.auPlus - do you know what your graduate entitlements are?Graduate teachers are entitled to:A start up allowance ($1,600 pro-rata at the start of your first and second years of teaching).Eight days additional non-contact time/graduate release time over your first year of teaching (timetabled as additional DOTT or two full release days per term).Eight days of relief funding paid to your school so you can attend your graduate modules. (This is payable to you as PTOIL if you did your modules in the holidays or online.)$150 curriculum materials allowance.Contingency allowance or travel and accommodation costs incurred to attend graduate modules (amount varies based on distance to Perth, starting at $115.91 for metro graduates). And if you are in your first 30 months of teaching, have completed graduate module one and have a contract with the DoE for the duration of the program, you are also eligible for the In-Class Coaching Program.Have you heard of the right to disconnect? Outside of school hours, i.e. on the weekend, during the school holidays or when you have sick leave, you have the right to disconnect. So, unless there’s an emergency you are not required to respond to electronic communications such as phone calls, emails or text messages. (See General Agreement clause 32 for full wording of this entitlement.) This gives you some boundaries to work out when and how you are going to get your work done.Plus know your DOTT time allocations: secondary, kindy and pre-primary teachers are entitled to 320 minutes per week while primary teachers have 270 mins per week. A win from the 2019 Agreement negotiations, from the hard work of you and your fellow members, saw an extra 30 minutes of DOTT time gained for primary teachers. If you’re having issues at your school you can start with talking to your union rep, deputy rep or women’s contact officer or give Member Assist a call for confidential advice.Have a topic you'd like us to chat about? Voice to Parliament and sustainability

Voice to Parliament and sustainability
In this episode, we’re talking about the recent Voice to Parliament referendum result and environmental sustainability.Tune into this episode to hear from SSTUWA Vice President Sharmila Nagar on these topics. The Voice to Parliament result was not what we wanted as an outcome but the SSTUWA is proud to have run an authentic and consistent campaign to support it.Conversations we had with our members at the grassroots level, through training, District Councils, forums and State Council were positive and we stood in solidarity with our members and First Nations education committee.Regardless of the outcome will we continue to listen to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Committee to guide us on First Nations educator voice and issues. We will be available to also provide avenues of support to our community as they process the result.Environmental sustainability is another issue of great interest to our members and we want to lead by example by reducing our environmental footprint and taking our environmental, social and corporate governance responsibilities fully.Western Teacher magazine is printed by local company close to our building, reducing transport distance. It is printed using recyclable paper. The plastic that it is wrapped in is fully compostable. We have 6,000 members who have opted into getting the digital version of Western Teacher rather than have it posted. We have an updated app and have done away with plastic member cards, replacing with e-cards.Solar panels are up and running at our West Perth building, with our union vehicles are shifting over to hybrid power.Lots of members are leading the way in terms of sustainability teaching in schools. We will share stories of good examples of practice in schools and TAFEs in Western Teacher. The union has also supported members impacted by natural disasters in recent times. In our current Log of Claims we are looking to make provision for natural disaster leave, which is on top of any other leave entitlements to support school members.Everyone is working hard out there and we encourage all members to seek the support and help that they need.Have a topic you'd like us to chat about? TAFE: Part 2

TAFE: Part 2
In this episode, we’re talking about all things TAFE with a focus on the current TAFE EBA negotiations.Tune into this episode to hear from SSTUWA President Matthew Jarman and TAFE organiser Ramona Mitussis. One significant issue facing TAFE lecturers today is workload. Issues with workload have been sparked in large by cuts in funding, which has in turn led to increased class sizes, cuts to student curriculum hours as well as an increase in compliance and audit related paperwork.Increasingly lecturers don’t have the time to focus on their passion of jumping in the classroom and delivering an excellent lesson but rather are occupied with compliance related paperwork driven by external audits.TAFE lecturers’ core function is to teach students and change their lives, and they want to spend as much time as possible doing that.In the current EBA, one of the main claims is for the TAFE sector investment in “unit development” to be increased and ongoing.Professional development is also crucial to creating graduates who are industry ready. And to enable that we need to make sure that our lecturers have access to the refurbishment of their tickets, their certifications and their licences so that they continue to be as contemporary as industry requires today. The current EBA is looking to find support for this.Retention of lecturers is also important in maintaining relationships with lecturers instead of losing them back to industry.Leave entitlements such as annual leave and professional allowance leave are being sought after in the current EBA negotiations. These kinds of conditions are standardised in other Agreements. Remote and regional TAFE lecturers also face challenges that may not be faced by colleagues in metro areas, for example access to healthcare and lack of childcare.Have a topic you'd like us to chat about? TAFE: Part 1

TAFE: Part 1
In this week’s episode we’re talking about all things TAFE.  Hear from SSTUWA TAFE organiser, Ramona Mitussis, and President Matthew Jarman. The TAFE Committee has now put forward the 2023 TAFE Log of Claims and are in negotiations to seek better working conditions for TAFE lecturers. Some key claims include class size maximums, supervising and providing support to lecturers, workload and job security. You may have seen or heard about the Public Sector Alliance (PSA), in which some of the biggest unions in WA have joined together to work to reform the public sector wages policy. Matt and Ramona discuss the joint PSA position and how it applies to the TAFE agreement.Since a meeting occurred with Deputy Premier; Treasurer; Minister for Transport; Tourism, Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA, there will now be a series of one-on-one consultations with  stakeholders, including the SSTUWA, to make cost of living claims to the government as the public sector wages policy is reviewed. Now more than ever lecturers, who are experts in their fields, are looking to the private sector for increased wages, which these negotiations aim to address.A focus of EBA negotiations will be providing supervision and support in TAFE settings, not only for the health and wellbeing and retention of lecturers but also so that they are getting the job satisfaction that they would like to achieve. The workload on lecturers, particularly in regional and remote areas, is significant and the issue of lecturer shortage is becoming more of problem, which must also be addressed.Overall, this podcast highlights the importance of retaining existing lecturers and attracting new lecturers to the TAFE profession.Have a topic you'd like us to chat about?
