Harvey Brownstone Interviews Matt Baume, Podcaster and Author, “Hi Honey, I’m Homo: Sitcoms, Specials, and the Queering of American Culture”
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Matt Baume, Podcaster and Author, “Hi Honey, I’m Homo: Sitcoms, Specials, and the Queering of American Culture” About Harvey's guest: Today’s guest, Matt Baume, is a writer, podcaster, and video-maker whose work focuses on pop culture and issues of particular interest to the LGBTQ+ community.   His popular online YouTube series, “Culture Cruise”, explores surprising behind-the-scenes stories from film and television history.  And his podcast interview show, “The Sewers of Paris”, is about how queer people's lives are shaped by our favorite books, movies, music, and shows.   He’s also known for his shows “Weekly Debrief” and “Marriage News Watch”.  And he’s the co-creator of the comedy podcast & live show “Queens of Adventure”.    His first book, entitled “Defining Marriage: Voices From a 40-year Labour of Love”, chronicles the compelling personal stories of the most prominent pioneers and champions  who fought for the legalization of same-sex marriage.    And today, he's here to talk about his brand new book entitled, “Hi Honey, I’m Homo: Sitcoms, Specials, and the Queering of American Culture”.   The book gives us an informative and entertaining analysis of how, starting in the early 70s, situation comedies like “All in the Family”, “Soap”, “Barney Miller”, “Cheers”, “The Golden Girls”, and many more American TV shows, used comedy as a medium to deliver provocative and progressive messages and lessons about bigotry, tolerance and sexuality.   From the hidden and subtle metaphors in “Bewitched”, to the studio politics on shows like  Ellen DeGeneres’ sitcom, and “Friends”, to the groundbreaking triumphant victories on “Will and Grace”, and “Modern Family”, the book shows us that positive media depictions of minorities on TV shows, have a demonstrable real-life impact in shaping public attitudes, fostering tolerance, acceptance and empathy.    Our guest was nominated for a GLAAD award for journalism, and his work has appeared in dozens of media outlets including National Public Radio, Rolling Stone, The Advocate, and many more.  The New York Times referred to his work as “thoughtful, thorough, informative and funny,” and I agree wholeheartedly. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ https://www.mattbaume.com/http://www.facebook.com/mattbaume https://twitter.com/MattBaume http://instagram.com/mattbaume http://www.youtube.com/mattbaumehttp://toot.io/@mattbaume #mattbaume   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Legends Roy Rogers & Dale Evans’ Granddaughter, Julie Rogers Pomilia
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Roy Rogers & Dale Evans’ Granddaughter, Julie Rogers Pomilia, Author, “Your Heroes My Grandparents” About Harvey's guest: Today’s guest, Julie Rogers Pomilia, is the granddaughter of one of the most beloved couples in the history of show business – the King and Queen of the Westerns, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.    They co-starred in 88 movies.  They had a radio show for 9 years, and starting in the 50’s, they were on TV almost continuously, starting with the Roy Rogers Show, the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Show, Happy Trails Theatre, and they appeared in dozens of variety and talk shows and award shows throughout their lives.  They recorded over 400 songs and sold millions of records.   Roy Rogers was the #1 Western box office star for 11 years in a row, from 1943 to 1954.  He has FOUR stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for his contribution to TV, radio, music and the movies.  And he’s the only performer to have been inducted TWICE into the Country Music Hall of Fame, once as part of the Sons of the Pioneers, and the 2nd time as an individual performer.  He was so incredibly popular back in the 50s and 60s, that there were over 400 toys and merchandising items with Roy Rogers’ name on them.   There was even a chain of Roy Rogers Restaurants.   And Dale Evans was an immensely successful star in her own right.  She wrote their iconic theme song, “Happy Trails”, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008, and was named one of the top 100 western songs of all time by the Western Writers of America.   And get this:  Dale Evans also wrote the classic Sunday School song, “The Bible Tells Me So”.  She also wrote 29 books, including her mega-best seller, “Angel Unaware”, inspired by their child Robin, who was born with Down Syndrome, and who died 2 days before her 2nd birthday.   Dale Evans has 2 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for her work in movies and on television.   Although WE knew Roy Rogers and Dale Evans as the King and Queen of the Westerns, our guest knew them as simply, Grandma and Grandpa.   She’s just released a wonderful, heartwarming book entitled, “Your Heroes, My Grandparents: A Granddaughter’s Love.”  The book gives us an intimate look at who Roy Rogers and Dale Evans really were, not only as superstars, but especially as devoted partners, parents of 9 children, and grandparents of 16 children.    Our guest is an elementary school teacher who’s spent the last 20 years travelling across the country, to western festivals, fairs and rodeos, to sing, tell stories, sit on panels, ride in parades, and meet with fans to honour and celebrate the legacy of her beloved grandparents and keep their memory alive.  She and her 2 sisters sang and performed around the country in a group called “The Rogers Legacy”, and she co-hosted a popular radio show called “Around the Barn”.  And she and her husband Gino run the Gino Pomilia Baseball Camp every summer in Larkspur, California.    And for many years she’s ridden horseback in the Pasadena Rose Parade on New Year’s Day. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Julie Rogers Pomilia, go to:https://www.facebook.com/jammyprod/https://www.instagram.com/jammyprod/https://www.tiktok.com/@jammyprod #JulieRogersPomilia  #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Susan Silver, Author, “Hot Pants in Hollywood: Sex, Secrets and Sitcoms”
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Susan Silver, Author, “Hot Pants in Hollywood: Sex, Secrets and Sitcoms” About Harvey's guest: Today’s guest, Susan Silver, is a show business trailblazer.  She was one of the first women to have a successful career as a television comedy writer, in an industry overwhelmingly dominated by men.    Back in the late 60s’, and despite being the youngest runner up for a prestigious Writers Guild Award for a script she’d written in graduate school, the only open door for a female writer in Hollywood was as a secretary.  She worked her way up to be producer of a TV show starring comedian Mort Sahl, and then got hired as a casting director on the groundbreaking TV show, “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In”.  When the show’s producer, George Schlatter, refused to allow a woman to join his writing team – offering her a job as a writer’s assistant instead - she pivoted into the world of TV sitcoms, and never looked back.   She wrote for some of the most iconic shows of all time, including The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Maude, The Partridge Family, The New Dick Van Dyke Show, Square Pegs, and many more.  In fact, our guest wrote the episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show called “The Square Shaped Room”, which won Ed Asner an Emmy Award.  She also wrote TV movies including “The Couple Takes a Wife” starring Paula Prentiss and Bill Bixby, and “The Girl Who Came Gift Wrapped”, starring Karen Valentine and Farrah Fawcett.    She’s one of the founding members of “Women in Film”, and she’s taught comedy writing at the Television Academy, and lectured at the Paley Center, and at numerous universities.   She’s appeared on TV many times, on CNN, HLN and The Today Show to name only a few.  She’s had her own weekly radio commentary on Robin Hood Radio called “Susan Says”.  And she’s written op-ed columns for The New York Times – AND for 4 years she wrote a highly entertaining column about dating, called “The Search For Mr. Adequate”, on NEW YORK SOCIAL DIARY DOT COM.    And FINALY, in 2017, she released her brilliant, hilarious, sometimes salacious, and very insightful memoir entitled, “Hot Pants in Hollywood: Sex, Secrets and Sitcoms”.   This book was such an enjoyable read, that I hated to get to the last page.    And let me tell you:  the episode describing a highly unusual medical “event” resulting from a particularly satisfying encounter with a vibrator, is most definitely worth TEN TIMES the price of the book. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Susan Silver, go to:https://hotpantsinhollywood.com/ https://www.facebook.com/HotPantsinHollywood https://www.instagram.com/susansilver88/  #SusanSilver   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Nelson Mandela’s Personal Assistant, Zelda La Grange, Author, “Good Morning, Mr. Mandela: A Memoir” About Harvey's guest: Today’s guest, Zelda La Grange, has had the most remarkable and life-altering career working side by side with one of the greatest and most beloved statesmen in history: Nelson Mandela.   She grew up in apartheid South Africa as a white Afrikanner, in a world of white supremacy and black oppression, separation and segregation.  Black and white people were not allowed to socialize or congregate in any way outside of an employment relationship.  And people of colour were not allowed to vote.   Our guest was raised to embrace the concept of apartheid.   But her perspectives, attitudes and beliefs – and in fact, her entire life – were totally transformed, starting in 1994, when at the age of 23, she began working as a typist in the office of South Africa’s 1st democratically elected Black President, Nelson Mandela – the man who was the voice of the oppressed, and who personified the liberation struggle, having spent 27 years in prison.    Over the course of almost 20 years, our guest served President Mandela in various capacities, both during and after his Presidency, going from typist to Assistant Private Secretary, to Private Secretary, to Manager and Spokesperson for his office, until his death on December the 5th, 2013.   She accompanied him on dozens of official visits and personal appearances, to virtually every corner of the globe.   In 2014, she published her highly acclaimed, deeply moving and compelling memoir entitled, “Good Morning, Mr. Mandela”.  She not only shares some of the most memorable moments during her time at Mr. Mandela’s side – but MOST IMPORTANTLY, this is an inspiring story of love and hope, in which she candidly explains the monumental impact that Nelson Mandela had on her life, and more specifically, on her personal transformation from a believer in apartheid to a believer in full equality for all people.   In 2014, her book was named the International Bestseller of the Year, and it’s been translated into 13 languages.  Our guest has received many awards for her dedication and service to Mr. Mandela, including the 2008 Woman of the Year Award by the South African Press.   And she’s one of the most sought-after speakers on the international lecture circuit, having given inspirational and motivational presentations at the most prestigious conferences and events throughout the world.  She’s also co-hosted a national TV talk show in South Africa.   And in 2019 she co-produced a documentary about Nelson Mandela entitled, “Madiba: A Glorious Human Achievement”.   She was also a guest curator to an international exhibition on the life and times of Nelson Mandela that has been touring internationally for the past 5 years. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Zelda La Grange, go to:http://zeldalagrange.com/ https://www.instagram.com/zeldalagrangesa/https://twitter.com/ZeldalaGrangeSAhttps://za.linkedin.com/in/zelda-la-grange #ZeldaLaGrange   #harveybrownstoneinterviews
