A Covid-19 and Wedding Planning Q&A

A Covid-19 and Wedding Planning Q&A
Episode 53 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast is a little bit different to previous episodes, as we recorded it from our respective homes due to Covid-19 restrictions. Thanks to the technological prowess and admirable patience of our producer, Ian Doyle, we were able to put together what we consider to be a really helpful episode, so we hope you don't mind too much that the sound quality isn't up to our usual standards! The episode also marks our final show before we head off on maternity leave and the podcast goes on hiatus, so we wanted to answer as many reader and listener questions as we possibly could in one, whopper Q&A session! Of course, many of these questions deal with coronavirus and weddings, but we're also tackling guest list dilemmas, style queries and plenty more besides. Episode Breakdown: A Covid-19 and Wedding Planning Q&AWedding tip: Celina's tip this week is to make a detailed wedding-day schedule, from wake-up call to last dance, and share it with one or two key suppliers, who should be able to easily identify any oversights! Couples often tell us that they underestimated the time it would take to get ready, travel between venues, have their portrait session, and get through the speeches, so this tip could save you some unwelcome stress on the big day itself!Main topic: Today, we're bringing you another wedding-planning Q&A, but not the one we had originally planned! We were expecting to discuss topics like dress shopping and wedding party politics, but understandably, we've been flooded with questions about coronavirus and weddings, and we wanted to address as many of these as possible. And, although we haven't been able to give as much concrete, practical advice as we would like, with the situation looking so uncertain, we think that this will be a really useful (and hopefully reassuring!) listen for anyone whose wedding looks set to be affected by Covid-19. We also made sure to answer lots of non coronavirus-related questions, as we know that the resulting tips will come in handy when this is all over and you're back in the swing of wedding planning!Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina and Claire discuss their favourite email newsletters, both free and subscription-based, including Rogue, Longreads, Pocket, Charlotte Jacklin's Monday Motivator, and Laura Jackson's The Hoste Post. Thanks for listening! If you loved the episode, don't forget to rate and review the podcast on iTunes. Oh, and if you know anyone who's engaged and planning a wedding, be sure to tell them about the podcast and share a link.We hope to bring the podcast back in 2021, but, in the meantime, there are over 50 episodes worth of tips and advice for you to listen back to! Your Family Drama Dilemmas Solved!
On episode 52 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're troubleshooting some of the most common family-related dilemmas, covering everything from feuding parents, to interfering siblings, to demanding cousins! Pretty much every couple we’ve encountered has experienced some kind of family conflict around their wedding, so, rather than resist the inevitable, we're dusting off our very best pieces of advice for minimising and reacting to wedding family drama. Our hope is that, after listening to this episode, you'll feel prepared to deal with all manners of squabbles and disputes, and get on with the fun parts of wedding planning!Episode Breakdown: Your Family Drama Dilemmas Solved!Wedding tip: Claire's tip this week is to communicate your favourite parts of your venue to your photographer, so they can arrange to take some of your wedding portraits there, if possible!Main topic: This week, we're talking about something that, unfortunately, seems to be unavoidable during the wedding-planning period - family-based conflict! For some reason, hosting a big celebration tends to spark issues among family members (if you're unlucky, in your partner's family as well as your own!), so our aim with this episode is to give you the tips and tools to tackle them! As well as offering up our top pieces of advice for avoiding and anticipating wedding family drama, we're troubleshooting some of the family issues that we get asked about most frequently. Hopefully, by heeding our advice, you can continue to enjoy the exciting, wedding-planning period in the face of any unwanted drama!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “My bridal party consists of my two sisters, my groom's sister, and two of my best friends, so five ladies in total. We all live in different cities, and so I don't regularly see them all together, just one-on-one. They are all lovely and dear to me, but have very different personalities, hobbies, life situations, etc. I'm a bit nervous for our bachelorette weekend as I know that some girls aren't overly fond of each other. My thought was to go rent a cottage in the country for a weekend and tour some vineyards together. How do I get all the girls to get along with each other and have a good time? I'm nervous that it will be very awkward or things may get catty. The wine may help... but it also may not! I’m hoping to avoid a Bridesmaids cookie situation!” Our advice for this listener is to voice your concerns to one or two of your bridal party members, but go ahead with your vineyard plan (which sounds fabulous by the way!), and trust that everyone will be on their best behaviour.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Claire's recommending Laura De Barra's indispensable DIY manual, Gaff Goddess. Thanks for listening! Wedding Food and Drink 101
On episode 51 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're going deep on a wedding-planning topic that almost every couple tells us is a top priority - the food and the drinks! Planning your wedding menu can be a real challenge - many couples aren't sure whether to take inspiration from their personal favourites or stick to crowd-pleasers, and then there are dietary requirements, wine allocations and late-night food offerings to think about! To tackle these questions and more, we're joined by Andrew Rudd, the executive chef and owner of Dublin venue Medley, who also looks after weddings and events at Ballintubbert House and Gardens in Co. Laois. As well as sharing lots of mouth-watering wedding food ideas, he's giving us a crash course on the world of wedding catering. Enjoy!Episode Breakdown: Wedding Food and Drink 101Wedding tip: Celina's tip this week is to keep your wedding cake design simple! If you're having a cake topper, ask your baker to focus the decoration on the lower layers of the cake, and remember that laser-cut cake toppers work better when they've got a long stem!Main topic: This week, we're talking wedding food and drink, covering such diverse topics as how to design the ultimate wedding feast, where to cut the budget, and how much wine to allocate per guest. Joining us in the studio is private chef and food writer Andrew Rudd of Irish venues Medley and Ballintubbert House and Gardens, who shares some of his favourite wedding food ideas, and answers lots and lots of our listeners' questions. Be sure to grab a snack before you hit play, because this episode makes for hungry listening!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I was wondering if you'd have any advice for me - I'm getting married abroad later in the year. I was quoted crazy money for hair and makeup over there, so I decided to ask my hairdresser and makeup artist from home to come, as covering her flights, accommodation and fee is still less than the quotes I got. I'm meeting her next week to discuss details and just want to be as prepared as possible. What would you think needs to be covered and paid for by us? And I don't want to have a legal contract with solicitors but I do want some sort of agreement so that I know I can depend on her - would you have any advice on this? ” Our advice for this listener is to expect to pay for flights, accommodation, transport and meals, and potentially extra checked luggage, but to discuss this with your hairstylist and makeup artist well in advance, and to follow up any conversations in writing by email.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's raving about essential oils! Thanks for listening! How to Find the Best Wedding Suppliers
On episode 50 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're turning our attention towards some very important people. And when we say important, we really mean it, because, without these guys, there literally wouldn’t be a wedding. They are, of course, your vendors! We're offering our top tips for finding the best wedding suppliers in the business, figuring out if they're the right fit for your wedding, and helping you get the best service, from initial introductory emails, right up to the big day itself!Episode Breakdown: How to Find the Best Wedding SuppliersWedding tip: Claire's tip this week is to check out our newly-created FAQ page, which is chock-full of answers to the most common wedding-related questions.Main topic: This week, we're talking wedding vendors, specifically, how to find the best ones! As well as being available on your wedding date, falling within your price range, and being fantastic at what they do, your wedding suppliers need to be able put you at ease on the day, so there are a lot of boxes to tick! The good news is that it's easy to find the best wedding suppliers when you know where to look. Our chat also includes tips for making the most of the professionals you've hired to work on your day, be they photographers, videographers, bands, musicians, stationers, florists, bakers, hairstylists, makeup artists, planners or caterers! Enjoy!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I would appreciate some guidance from you guys as to how I can show my appreciation to my parents on my wedding day during the speeches. They have been so helpful with everything including foraging for berries for our wedding favours (jam), microdetails about the wedding and making sure it is all exactly what we want. Most importantly, they have always made my partner feel just like a member of the family and I couldn't be more grateful. Any suggestions as to how I could make a massive fuss of them during the speeches?” Our advice for this listener is to take inspiration from your own lovely email and be specific. We recommend writing down some key things your parents have done for you, to reference in your wedding speech, and also write them a card or a letter so they have something they can read over and over again!Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Claire's suggesting her favourite TV shows for a cathartic cry, including This is Us, Queer Eye, and DIY SOS!Thanks for listening! Bridal Beauty Prep: Your Essential Guide

Bridal Beauty Prep: Your Essential Guide
We're constantly fielding questions on wedding beauty prep, so we thought it was about time that we sat down with an expert to give this topic the time and attention it deserves! On episode 49 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're joined by freelance beauty therapist Ciara McCluskey to talk about all things skincare and beauty, taking in waxing, tan, brows and nails along the way. The aim of this episode is to help you develop an affordable and doable skincare routine, whatever your budget. Ciara will also be talking us through the most popular treatments for brides, and crucially, the order in which to get them! This is wedding beauty prep 101, so you might want to have a pen and paper at the ready before you hit play!Episode Breakdown: Bridal Beauty Prep: Your Essential GuideWedding tip: Celina's tip this week is to use this handy formula to figure out how much wine you need for your wedding!Main topic: This week, we're talking about wedding beauty prep, which, I think we can all agree, is an intimidating topic! That's why we wanted to sit down with freelance beauty therapist Ciara McCluskey to talk through treatments, products and lifestyle factors (is anyone out there actually drinking two litres of water per day!?), specifically, which ones are worth the investment! As well as answering lots and lots of listener questions across skincare, tanning, waxing, nails, and brows, Ciara gave us her top tips for creating a foolproof skincare regime (and sticking to it!) and talked us through the ideal wedding beauty timeline. Enjoy!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I’m not coming with an exciting question about my upcoming nuptials as they are no longer going ahead. I collected my wedding dress in September and by the end of October, my fiancé told me he had changed his mind. I now have an unused, unworn and unaltered couture gown sitting in my wardrobe that I cannot sell. The price was €3,595 and I have already reduced it to €3,000 but to no avail. I have an advert on sellmyweddingdress.ie and have contacted a number of bridal boutiques, which have been reluctant to sell my gown. The only place that has come back to me said the highest they would offer to sell it for is €2,000. Any tips on where I can get the most for my dress? I don't want to sell it for half price.” Our response for this listener is that, unfortunately, it's unlikely she'll be able to sell her wedding dress for the price she's hoping, which is around 85% of the full retail price. Generally speaking, we recommend selling for 50% - 70% of the full retail price. That said, we think it's worth casting a wide net with online marketplaces, including Depop and Adverts, and maximising the chance of selling by using lots of keywords.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's suggesting you book tickets for a supper club. Her pick for Dublin is Ethiopian pop-up restaurant Gursha! Thanks for listening! Got something to add to the conversation? Shoot us a mail at hello@onefabday.com. How to Deal with Bridesmaid Drama

How to Deal with Bridesmaid Drama
How do I tell my sister she's not going to be in my bridal party? What should I do if my maid of honour isn't pulling her weight? How can I get my bridesmaids to agree on their dresses? In episode 48 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're answering all of these questions and more! Yes, we're attempting to take the drama out of wedding planning by offering our advice and tips for coping with (and hopefully, eliminating!) bridesmaid drama! We'll also be discussing how to choose the right people for the job, and how to manage your expectations (and theirs!), so we really hope you find this episode helpful!Episode Breakdown: How to Deal With Bridesmaid DramaWedding tip: Celina's tip this week is to learn how to tie a tie, and how to tie a bow tie, regardless of how likely you are to wear one on the big day! Believe us when we say that someone in the wedding party will require your expertise!Main topic: This week, we're giving you a virtual toolbox for dealing with bridesmaid drama, across such potentially controversial areas as dress shopping, hen party planning, and job delegation. We wouldn't, for a minute, want to imply that groups of women are prone to disagreement (that's just not how we roll!), but we can't ignore the many, many questions we receive weekly from brides who are experiencing issues with their bridal party. So, as well as giving you tips for choosing your bridesmaids, and helping you manage your expectations in the run up to the big day, we're sharing our thoughts on some of the most commonly-asked bridesmaid-related questions.Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I was hoping you can help me with an outfit conundrum I have ahead of my daughter’s wedding this summer. I’m not a fan of my legs at the best of times, so I was planning to buy a pants suit, but found the most beautiful light blue dress in the sales, and it was such a bargain, I snapped it up. It looks lovely on, and sits right below the knee, but the problem is my legs! The blue colour just shows up the veins in my legs, and I’m prone to bruising. I don’t want to put lots of effort into my hair, makeup and outfit only for my legs to let me down. Are tan tights really dated? Should I go down the fake tan route? Any tips you have would be great. My daughter lives abroad and isn’t back until the wedding, so I can’t really get her help!” Our advice for this listener is to invest in a good quality pair of tights, and find a stockist where you can expect great customer service. The in-store experts will be happy to help you choose the right pair!Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's suggesting bullet journalling! Thanks for listening! Should You Just Elope?

Should You Just Elope?
In episode 48 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're answering the question that all couples probably ask themselves at some point in wedding planning - “Should we just elope!?” We love elopements here at One Fab Day, particularly as couples get more creative with small weddings and alternative celebrations. But we firmly believe that there are right and wrong reasons to choose an elopement over a full-blown wedding, which we'll be exploring in this chat. We've also come up with a few compromises that fall half-way between the two formats, and have thrown in some helpful tips for eloping couples to boot! Enjoy!Episode Breakdown: Should You Just Elope?Wedding tip: Claire's tip this week is to get your guests mingling at dinner by sharing nuggets of trivia about them at the tables. You could even turn it into a fun guessing game, as suggested by our producer, Ian!Main topic: This week, we're talking about elopements, specifically how to tell when it's the right move for you and your partner, as opposed to a rash decision made in a moment of weakness, when a full wedding celebration seems too daunting! Our aim with this episode is to answer the question, "Should we just elope?!" but we're also suggesting a few popular alternatives that fall somewhere in between an elopement and a wedding, and offering some helpful planning tips for eloping couples.Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “My dilemma is about what to buy for the bridal party and the groomsmen. We originally said we would pay for all their rooms as a gift, but that's eight rooms and it's now one of our biggest expenses. So what I'm wondering is, is it a prerequisite that the bride and groom pay for the rooms? If we don't, will we be seen as being cheap and ungrateful? What about a travel voucher? I'm really lost on this. I just want the presents to be useful and not generic." While it's not expected that the couple pay for the wedding party accommodation, at least not in Ireland and the UK, we think it's worth considering it if the venue is very expensive and no affordable is available, or you've specifically asked your pals to stay where you're staying. Alternatively, we're big fans of the travel voucher idea! In our book, a practical gift is always superior to a rushed, last-minute buy.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Claire's suggesting @CommentsByCelebs on Instagram! Thanks for listening! How to Have a Laid-Back Wedding

How to Have a Laid-Back Wedding
In episode 46 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're talking about how to create a relaxed, fun and informal atmosphere on the big day. Most couples will say that this is a top priority for their wedding, but there's very little information out there about how to actually make it happen, which is where your humble podcast hosts come in! We've put together some indispensable advice for creating a laid-back wedding, including tips on getting guests mingling, setting the right tone, figuring out which formalities to ditch, and, crucially, ensuring that you and your partner are relaxed on the day itself!Episode Breakdown: How to Have a Laid-Back WeddingWedding tip: Claire's tip this week is to fill up that space at the front of the ceremony venue! For guests, this means not being afraid to nab a prime spot. For couples, it means asking a wedding party member to help manage the flow of guests into the space.Main topic: This week, we're presenting our top tips for creating a fun, laid-back wedding, something that, contrary to popular belief, actually takes quite a lot of thought and careful planning to achieve! From creating the perfect balance across the guest list, to ensuring that each guest knows exactly where they're supposed to be (and when!), there are plenty of ways to informalise your wedding celebration, so this episode really is a must-listen!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I’m having two bridesmaids, my sister who lives abroad, and my best friend. My partner has two brothers so this matches nicely. But my best friend has just found out she is pregnant, and due to give birth on my wedding day. She's said she will still be at the hen (when she's eight months' pregnant!) but likely not the wedding day, but that she might get a coordinating dress in case she can make it. What should I do now? I have another close friend who I could ask to step in but I would need to discuss this with my best friend and wait until she's ready to announce the pregnancy. While it would be nice to give my best friend the option of choosing to be bridesmaid or not, I think it will lead to extra expenses, and we had planned to keep the wedding party small for this reason. Also, while I love my sister dearly, she can be challenging at times and another bridesmaid would make a great buffer on the morning of the wedding. My fiance is worried that I'll arrive to the church stressed and worked up if it's just me, my sister and my mom. And for my sister to plan my hen party from abroad on her own would be difficult. I’m also wondering how my other friend will take being the second choice bridesmaid if I do ask her to step in. My question is, how can I accommodate my friend who’s pregnant, but also get the support I need on the day?” Our advice for this listener is to keep your best friend on board, and ask your other friend to join the wedding party. This might mean shouldering a few extra costs, but it'll be worth it to preserve your relationship with your best friend and guarantee you'll get the support that you need on the day.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Claire's recommending the 1 Second Everyday App.Thanks for listening! Our Top Tips for Mastering Your Wedding Budget
In episode 45 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're focussing on an area of wedding planning that most couples dread discussing, or even thinking about - budgeting! Drawing up and sticking to a budget is blatantly not as fun as shopping for your wedding-day outfits or attending a cake tasting, but it simply has to be done. We can’t promise to take the drudgery out of budgeting, but by following our wedding budget tips, you should at least be able to do it efficiently, freeing up more time for celebratory Champagne!Episode Breakdown: Our Top Tips for Mastering Your Wedding BudgetWedding tip: Celina's tip this week is make sure to eat breakfast on the morning of the wedding, and factor this into your getting-ready plan!Main topic: This week, we're talking about budgeting, which, along with making the guest list, tends to cause the most hassle, confusion and arguments among engaged couples, so we’ll be treating this topic pretty seriously. But, hopefully we can have some fun along the way, too! We've poured all of our expertise into creating a step-by-step guide to wedding budgeting, which should help you get off on the right foot, regardless of how much you've got to spend! Some of our wedding budget tips may sound a little bit strict, but our aim with this episode is to help you avoid common budgetary issues that real couples contact us about all the time. In short, you'll thank us later!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I’m going to be shopping for my wedding dress soon, and I’m already starting to stress, as I’ve had loads of offers from people who want to attend appointments with me. My Mum, my Aunty, my partner’s Mum, my partner’s Stepmum, my three sisters and four of my good female friends, and my best friend in work have all mentioned it, and obviously, that’s way too many people to fit in one boutique! How do I choose, and how do I let down the others down easily?!” Our advice for this listener is to prioritise the people you expect to be the most helpful, and organise a few extra boutique visits to accommodate anyone who you feel obliged to invite, for example, your Mum or sisters.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's suggesting hosting your pals for a weekend brunch or lunch - late January's the perfect time in which to do it!Thanks for listening! How to Find the Perfect Wedding Venue

How to Find the Perfect Wedding Venue
In episode 44 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're talking about the all-important wedding venue search. The wedding venue you choose has a huge impact on the look, feel and vibe of the day, so there's definitely a lot riding on this decision, but the good news is that there are wonderful venues out there to satisfy every budget and set of requirements. In this week's chat, we're showing you how to find your wedding venue, from initial research, to visiting venues in person, to paying your booking deposit, and chatting through some of the wedding industry lingo that couples often find confusing. We're also providing you with a handy list of everything you need to know before you start looking, which will make the whole process a lot easier. Enjoy!Episode Breakdown: How to Find the Perfect Wedding VenueWedding tip: Claire's tip this week is to remember (or ask a wedding party member to remind you!) to take off your veil, headpiece, sunglasses and/or eyewear for some of the photos. That way, you'll have lots of options in the final set of imagery.Main topic: This week, we're talking through how to find your wedding venue, including what you need to know before you commence your search, how to put together your longlist, what questions to ask during your viewings, and what points to nail down before taking the plunge. We'll also be explaining the basic styles of venue, covering hotel and resort venues, exclusive hire venues, marquee weddings, pub and restaurant venues and those wacky wild card venues that you've seen on Pinterest!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I am German, living in Ireland, and we are looking to have a small wedding in Malahide since we connect so much with the place. We are having 12 guests for the ceremony and dinner, with more people coming for drinks afterwards. We’re wondering how to break the news to some friends in Germany and the USA who won’t be invited. The main reason we’re not inviting them is because we feel that asking friends to travel and not invite them to the ceremony or dinner would be rude. We’re worried about how they might react, particularly when they hear that we have lots of Irish friends coming to the drinks after the meal.” Our advice for this listener is send a carefully-worded email to your friends in Germany and the USA to let them know about your plans, and consider planning a small get-together with them some time in the future.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Claire's suggesting you form a roast dinner club with your pals. Thanks for listening! How to Manage your Wedding Planning Timeline
In this week's episode of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're talking about managing your wedding planning timeline, essentially, figuring out what needs to be done, and when, and making a foolproof plan for how it's all going to get completed before the big day! This episode is packed with practical tips, including advice on which items on your to-do list should definitely be left until the final weeks, and which ones benefit from being dealt with early. Enjoy!Episode Breakdown: How to Manage your Wedding Planning TimelineWedding tip: Celina's tip this week is to coordinate the thank yous across all of the speeches, or ask an assigned wedding party member to do this for you. There's really no need for the same people to be thanked in four different speeches!Main topic: This week, we're presenting you with a handy, step-by-step road map for your wedding. Navigating your wedding-related admin can be quite the challenge - you've got a mammoth to-do list and a large stretch of time in which to complete it. We often hear from couples who aren't sure how to order their tasks, or are worried that they're starting too early, or leaving things too late! That's why we wanted to provide tips and advice for managing your wedding planning timeline.Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “Sorry, this is a bit of a complicated one, and I'm not sure if there's much advice that can be given to be honest, but here goes. We're getting married in May and have given out all the invites. We're still waiting on my Nan to RSVP, I thought it was odd that she hadn't, but thought maybe she thought it went without saying that she would be there. Yesterday my mum told me that my Nan has rung my uncle and told him she won't be coming to the wedding if we don't invite her brother, and she was trying to convince him not to come as well. I'm really shocked and hurt by this. We're only having a small wedding at a registry office followed by a small reception venue so we have only been able to invite grandparents and aunts and uncles and a couple of cousins. Plus, there is already some drama between him and my family anyway. I spent the whole day yesterday crying about it as I can't believe she would be so manipulative and spiteful. I am her eldest grandchild and the first of us to get married as well. We've always had a close relationship.” Our advice for this listener is to confront your Nan and reiterate that you'd love to have her attend the wedding but that you're restricted with the guest list, and that sacrifices have been made on both sides. And, whatever the outcome, remind yourself that she's the one making this awkward, not you!Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's recommending you seek out some of the albums that featured on the Best of 2019 lists that you may have missed during the year! Thanks for listening! The First Thing You Need to Do When You Get Engaged
It can be hard to know exactly what to do when you get engaged, and in our opinion, there's one, hugely important task that always gets overlooked - sitting down with your other half to discuss your hopes and dreams for the big day! In this week's episode of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're offering up a step-by-step guide to that initial wedding-planning chat, which we feel is absolutely essential! We've even gone so far as to provide you with a handy agenda to guide you through your first proper wedding-related conversation. Once you've listened to this episode, all you'll need is your partner, and a bottle of your chosen tipple, and you're ready to start planning!Episode Breakdown: The First Thing You Need to Do When You Get EngagedWedding tip: Claire's tip this week is to keep your wedding tablescape simple! An overstuffed table can really detract from the fun atmosphere of the meal.Main topic: This week, we're talking about what to do when you get engaged, specifically, how to navigate that crucial first wedding-planning chat with your other half. We've even provided a six-point agenda, which you'll find below! What kind of wedding do you want? What is your budget for the wedding?Who do you want to invite? What's your ideal wedding venue? When would you like to get married? Is there a key theme, colour, or style in your head?Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “My fiancé and I are struggling to pick out our first dance song. We both have a song in mind that we'd like to use, however, I feel like we cannot use it. The reason is that a couple years ago, a close friend of ours used the song for their first dance. My fiancé believes that, as we discussed dancing to that song way before our friends got married, we should be fine using the same song. He also believes that it's our wedding so we should do what makes us happy. While I agree, I also don't want to step on any toes and do something that might not be considered proper wedding etiquette. Maybe I'm thinking too far into this but it has been a real concern of mine.” Our advice for this listener is to go ahead and use the song. If your friends are at all reasonable, they won't object, but it might be worth giving them a head's up about it in advance, just in case. Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Claire's recommending a swap shop or charity shop crawl. Thanks for listening! How to Survive Engagement Season
In this week's episode of the The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're talking about the phenomenon that is engagement season, specifically, how to get through it if you're waiting on a proposal, or you're feeling insecure about how your own engagement went down! The Champagne-filled period that stretches from December to Valentine's Day can be really challenging, as your social media feeds get flooded with ring selfies, and epic engagement stories spread like wildfire throughout your social circle. With this in mind, we put together our top tips for surviving engagement season, including how to cut yourself some slack if you're experiencing unexpected anxiety.Episode Breakdown: How to Survive Engagement SeasonWedding tip: Celina's tip this week is to remember to pack a pair of sunglasses that works with your wedding outfit. Even if you're having a winter wedding, they'll probably come in handy for portrait sessions!Main topic: This week, we're talking about surviving engagement season, that time of year when it feels like everyone you know - and their little sister! - is getting engaged in some outragously romantic fashion. It’s a time when even the most laid-back among us might start to set high expectations about a huge ring and a fairytale proposal, or find ourselves obsessing about whether or not an engagement is imminent. Equally, if you're recently engaged, you may feel like your proposal story doesn't measure up! But don't fret, because our tips will help you navigate this tricky time of year!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “Please help! I’m changing my surname to my husband’s after we get married, and while I’m trying to own my decision, I can still hear my inner feminist voice (and some of my friends’) saying I’m betraying the sisterhood. Any tips for making the final call and explaining it to those who don’t get why you’ve made the choice to change your name?” Our advice for this listener is to know that whatever decision you make will be the right one. Your inner feminist voice, if it was truly feminist, wouldn't pass judgement either way!Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's recommending starting a new Christmas tradition with your partner! Thanks for listening! Using Instagram to Plan your Wedding: Our Dos and Don'ts
This week on The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're covering a topic that we’ve been dying to discuss for quite a while: using Instagram to plan your wedding! Lots of couples tell us that they’ve found inspiration on the popular and sometimes all-consuming app, but it isn’t without its pitfalls! That's why we decided to put together an indispensable list of Dos and Don'ts. Our handy, wedding-centric user guide to Instagram includes lots of tips and tricks that you can apply to the popular wedding planning app (that isn't actually a wedding planning app at all!) For example, you'll learn why you should check your venue's location tag, but shouldn't DM your florist. Happy scrolling!Episode Breakdown: Using Instagram to Plan your Wedding: Our Dos and Don'tsWedding tip: Claire's tip this week is to be careful who you share your full wedding photo gallery with, that is, if you don't want to be confronted with a giant print of your least-favourite photo every time you visit your parents' house! Instead, we recommend putting together a photo album for family (your photographer can help you with this) or creating a carefully-curated edit for them!Main topic: We love Instagram as much as the next gals, and turn to it regularly for trendspotting and idea-gathering, but we also have a lot of opinions on how it should - and shouldn’t! - be used. We’ve seen couples run into trouble with Instagram finds, and get massively overwhelmed by the sheer amount of content in their feeds. So, in episode 40 of the One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we wanted to present some Instagram wedding planning Dos and Don'ts, covering inspiration gathering, venue scouting, wedding dress shopping and everything in between!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “We're six months out from the wedding day and the deposits are all paid. A few weeks ago, we got some feedback on our reception venue via the groom's mother. A friend of hers attended a wedding in our hotel and reported that, while the food was good, the service was 'not great'. I'm panicking as I imagine the criticism has been quite toned down before it gets to me. I'm also kicking myself because, when I think back to when we had lunch in the hotel bar on the day of the showcase, the wait and bar staff were forgetful and we waited a while for our food. This is a four-star brand name hotel, by the way. The hotel's wedding coordinator, who we met when booking, has since left the company and been replaced by a girl who is much less experienced and less organised. Most of our budget is going on this five-course meal and wine, and it's really bothering me that bad service could ruin that, and be the enduring memory of the day for our guests. So what can we do? Booking another venue is out of the question as deposits have been paid and guests have booked rooms. Would a day-of wedding planner help in this situation?” Our advice for this listener is to raise your concerns with the venue, and maintain perspective - mediocre service, while not ideal, is not likely to ruin the day for your guests.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Claire's recommending creating a lifelong bucket list with your partner! Thanks for listening! Must-Hear Wedding Tips from Real Grooms
Who's supposed to plan the stag party? How do you go about writing a wedding speech? Do you need a back-up wedding suit? In episode 39 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we'll be answering all of these questions and more, in conversation with two real grooms! Our guests are lifelong pals Dallan and Pauric, who both got married in 2019, and both played a huge role in the other's big day; Dallan was Pauric's Best Man, while Pauric officiated Dallan's wedding to his now-wife Laura. In this chat, we hear some terrific wedding tips for grooms, but also brides, wedding party members and everyone in between!Episode Breakdown: Must-Hear Wedding Tips from Real GroomsWedding tip: Celina's tip this week is to decide how much time you'd like to allocate to wedding portraits on the day of the wedding. For some couples, ambitious photographs are a top priority, while others are motivated by missing as little of their drinks reception as possible! We recommend chatting about this with your partner. Once you're on the same page, you're ready to discuss the portrait session with your photographer.Main topic: In episode 39 of the One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're turning our attention to the grooms, covering everything from stag parties to speeches to suit shopping, in conversation with two real grooms, Dallan and Pauric. As well as fleshing out our top wedding tips for grooms, we're asking such tricky questions as, How invested were you in the wedding flowers and décor? Did you pull your weight in wedding planning? and What would you change about your big day? By the end of this week's installment, you'll know how to assign roles in the wedding party, tackle the guestlist, and make your wedding speech truly legendary!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “My question is about suppliers and vendors. Some are quite responsive with emails and confirming things, but others are quite slow and I find it quite frustrating. In particular, there’s a hair stylist who I would like to book a trial with before I pay the deposit for the actual day. I have crazy curly hair, so it's hard to find someone who actually knows how to work with it. I've had bad experiences in the past, so don't want to commit to someone before I can see how they work with natural curls. I found someone who has great reviews and settled on a date for the trial that’s the same date as my engagement photos, but I'm having to send a lot of 'Did you receive my email?' emails after a week of radio silence. I understand she's probably busy and my wedding isn't until April, but I'm just a bit frustrated, as I want to know if the hair trial date is secure, or if I should look for someone else. It also doesn't give me a load of confidence moving forward. Is this normal? We've had a few other vendors, like the DJ, be very slow to respond, but that doesn't bother me as much because there's so many options out there.” Our advice for this listener is give your supplier the benefit of the doubt, and go ahead with the trial, as you'll likely be happy with her when you meet her and get to see her work up close. Suppliers like hairstylists and DJs might have to communicate with dozens of different couples at once, so it's quite normal for them to be slow to respond to couple's queries.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's recommending a Whatsapp-based book club! Thanks for listening! Things You Can Ditch From Your Wedding Right Now
We've lost count of the number of times we've been asked how to save money on your wedding, but there's another question that we don't think is asked enough, and that's, "How do I save time in the run up to my wedding?" Well, in episode 38 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're helping you do both! We're presenting a list of all the details, elements and purchases that you can happily drop from your wedding today, without your guests ever noticing! Now, we're not suggesting that you ditch all 29 items mentioned, but it's worth noting that, if you did, you'd save around €10,000/£9,000/$11,000, and about a fortnight's worth of wedmin! Ditching a handful of things from our list is probably a more realistic goal, so grab your red pen and let's go!Episode Breakdown: 29 Things You Can Ditch From Your Wedding Right NowWedding tip: Claire's tip this week is to remember to pack an overnight back for the wedding! Whether you're getting ready at home, at a hotel, or at your venue, this is an absolute must, unless you want to go down to breakfast on the morning after the big day in nothing but a bathrobe! We've got a handy checklist of everything you need to include here.Main topic: We love an elaborate, no-expense-spared party as much as the next gals, but we're also aware that lots of couples are desperate to slash either their wedding budget, or their wedding to-do list... or perhaps both! One of the best ways to do this is to drop a handful of elements that you expected to include in your wedding, so in today's episode, we're giving you a handy list of things to ditch! Our Ditch List includes lots of cute and pretty, but ultimately unnecessary, details that absolutely no one will miss on the big day, least of all you and your partner! If you're looking to save money on your wedding, or remove some tasks from your to-do list, this is an ideal place to start.Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I'm an Irish bride living in Vancouver. My fiancé and I got engaged in the spring of 2018 and it was so special. Our wedding is December 2020. I'm just wondering if you have any tips on how to keep people excited as our big day is coming in. Being abroad, I find it really hard when people aren't excited over big things. I completely understand it's been a longer engagement (over 2.5 years), but we were adamant that we didn't want to take out a loan or live like hermits to achieve a shorter engagement.” Our advice for this listener is to celebrate wedding milestones with her partner, and to accept the inevitable! Unfortunately, you can't force people to get excited about your wedding, but rest assured that they will be jumping out of their skin with enthusiasm when the big day finally rolls around!Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Claire's recommending a board or parlour game tournament, complete with prizes and leaderboard! Thanks for listening! The Wedding Planning Advice the Experts Want you to Hear
In episode 37 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're celebrating One Fab Day's 10th birthday in conversation with founders Naoise McNally and Susan Gallagher! The podcast, and indeed, the very website you're currently visiting, wouldn't exist without them, so it's only fitting that they make an appearance on the show as we hit this very exciting milestone! Naoise and Susan have racked up a whopping 20 years of wedding expertise between them, so, naturally, we had to grill them on the most valuable pieces of advice they've learned along the way. From managing your budget, to dealing with interfering relatives, to executing those last-minute details, these are the expert wedding tips you can't afford to miss!Episode Breakdown: The Wedding Planning Advice the Experts Want you to HearWedding tip: Celina's tip this week is to put your phone away on the big day, or, better still, hand it off to a member of the wedding party for safe keeping. That way, you'll be able to stay present and be in the moment, but you'll still be contactable in case of an emergency!Main topic: For today's episode, we sat down with One Fab Day founders, Naoise McNally and Susan Gallagher, to tease out their very best expert planning tips, on the very week that our humble website turns 10! From fielding unsolicited advice, to assigning roles in your wedding, to dealing with unforseen issues on the day, there are some serious gems to be found in our chat!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I recently got engaged and my younger (full) sister had quite a negative reaction to my older, half-sister helping my now-fiancé to pick the ring. It totally burst the little happy bubble the engagement had created, and I'm finding it hard to see past it. My mother is pandering to her too, and telling me that I shouldn't have my half-sister as my maid of honour when we get married, and that all of my sisters should be treated equally. Mind you, the younger sister did a disappearing act on the night of my other sister's wedding while she was bridesmaid, so I don’t trust her not to create drama.” Our advice for this listener is to go with your gut, choose the sister who's best suited to the role of Maid of Honour, and shut down any further chat about it in the family with a simple one-liner. Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's recommending the most wholesome YouTube channel in existence, Pasta Grannies! Thanks for listening! Easy Ways to Make Your Wedding More Sustainable
Episode 36 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast is all about taking the guilt out of wedding planning, by giving your big day a quick sustainability audit. We're not for a minute suggesting that you turn your plans upside down to reduce the environmental or ethical impact of your wedding, what we're really doing in this episode is highlighting lots of achievable ways to make your big day more sustainable, eco-friendly, enviromentally-friendly, and ethical. This is an incredibly complex subject (one that would probably require a 20-part series to cover full!), so we wanted to keep it simple with a list of our favourite sustainable wedding tips and ideas. Aim to take two or three of these ideas on board, and you'll be well on your way to a more sustainable celebration!Episode Breakdown: Easy Ways to Make Your Wedding More SustainableWedding tip: Claire's tip this week is to use signage in your day to let guests know about all the fun elements you've planned for them. This could be anything from lawn games to photo booths, to a cosy room in your venue where guests can go for a few moments of quiet.Main topic: Today's episode is all about making your wedding more sustainable, eco-friendly, enviromentally-friendly, and ethical, which, we have to admit, is a bit of a mammoth topic to cover in one episode. As a result, our top sustainable wedding tips cover everything from choosing a venue with an eco-friendly ethos, to purchasing biodegradable glitter for your '80s-themed hen night! We talk about huge elements of the day, like deciding where to get married, and which caterer to book, as well as little ones, like suggesting a cruelty-free brand to your makeup artist and leaving that Wifey for Lifey luggage tag on the shelf! Most of our ideas will go completely unnoticed by your guests, and cost very little extra in terms of budget or workload, so we're sure that there's something on the list for everyone!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I'm looking for some advice. My engagement ring and wedding band were given to me by my Nanny (grandmother). I'm very close with her and she does not speak to an Aunt of mine. It's not your standard fall out, they won't be in the same room together. I've been told by my family that I have to invite my Nanny and not my Aunty and I just need to tell my Aunty that she can't come. I'm not sure what the best route to go here is. For all other events, I've invited everyone and let them all decide who goes, but I feel a bit tied because of the rings and the fact I will be leaving from Nanny's house. Do you have any advice on how to approach the situation? I feel like I'm getting quite biased advice from family.” Our tip for this listener is to plan a separate celebration with your Aunt, and start the conversation there!Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Claire's suggesting you plan a small, low-pressure event for someone else, be it a baby shower for a pal, or a charity bake sale in your workplace! Thanks for listening! How a Pregnant Fashion Editor Planned her Wedding
In episode 35 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're talking about planning a wedding when two become three! The further we move away from traditional marriages, the more brides find themselves in the position of wedding planning while pregnant. Obviously, if your due date is around the time of your wedding, you may have to postpone it, but if you're going to be pregnant on the day, or you'll have a small baby in tow, there are a lot more options. Our guest today is You Magazine fashion editor and expecting Mum Grace Cahill, who will be tying the knot with her other half, Adam, in 2020, when their new arrival will be eight months old. It's a very workable timeline, but it also means that Grace has been pregnant for a huge chunk of planning, which isn't without its challenges! Her advice on wedding planning while pregnant covers essential topics such as navigating wedding dress shopping and simplifying the budget, so let's dive in!Episode Breakdown: How a Pregnant Fashion Editor Planned her WeddingWedding tip: Celina's tip this week is to make a plan for the night before the wedding. This could be anything from an intimate dinner with family, to a trad session in a local pub, to a quiet night of pampering with your bridesmaids. Whatever your preference, it’s good to have something in the calendar before all your relatives arrive at the venue, and demand you spend the evening in the bar with them!Main topic: Today's episode is all about wedding planning while pregnant, something our lovely guest knows all about! As well as being a stylist, journalist, and fashion editor of The Irish Daily Mail’s You Magazine, Grace Cahill is an expecting Mum, who will be tying the knot with her other half, Adam, in 2020. Our chat covers everything from wedding dress shopping with a bump, to incorporating a newborn into your wedding plans, to catering for pregnant guests, to managing your budget when you've got two major life events on the horizon!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I absolutely love smoke bomb pictures and really want to incorporate into my wedding shots but does the reality live up to the dream?! And also will they stain my dress? Even if you just stand in the smoke and get someone else to light/hold it?” Our advice is, of course, to use smoke bombs if you really want to, but we're also mulling over some of the challenges associated with these popular photographic props. For example, they're unpredictable, potentially time-consuming, and yes, it is possible that they'll stain your wedding dress! Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's recommending an open online course, like the ones offered by Masterclass, Coursera, and Udemy. There are lots of short, low-commitment options available, and you can learn everything from how to train your dog, to how to sing like Christina Aguilera (sort of!)Thanks for listening! How to Make *Any* Kind of Wedding Ceremony Special
In episode 34 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're on a mission to help you create a meaningful and highly personal ceremony, the kind that will make your guests laugh, cry, and maybe even break into song! Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, particularly if you're having a religious or civil ceremony (although, it's worth pointing out that secular and symbolic ceremonies have restrictions, too!). This week, we wanted to offer up our favourite unique wedding ceremony ideas for all couples, whether you're getting hitched in a catholic church, a registry office or on the side of a cliff! If we may toot our own horns for a moment, we think this is a super helpful episode, and we hope you walk away from it with lots of inspiration for your own big day!Episode Breakdown: How to Make *Any* Kind of Wedding Ceremony SpecialWedding tip: Claire's tip this week is for grooms; make a fun plan for the morning of the wedding, or you might find yourself at a loose end for four and a half hours, while other wedding party members are getting hair and makeup done!Main topic: Today's episode is all about ways to personalise your wedding ceremony, be it religious, civil, secular or purely symbolic.
