Smart Investing with 529 Plans

Smart Investing with 529 Plans
Welcome to this week’s edition of the Doctor’s Eyes Only podcast where Vestia Partner and CEO Lauren Oschman discusses the flexibility and limitations of 529 education savings plans that physicians can potentially take advantage of when saving for their children’s future education costs. Lauren explains what a 529 savings plan is, how it works, and the benefits of using this investment strategy for the potential of tax free growth and state tax deductions. With most anything that has a tax benefit, 529 plans have limits to contributions, and the money can only be used for a select number of qualified expenses, but as Lauren explains, there have been recent changes that allow for more potential flexibility in how the funds can be used. Lauren also covers some other important scenarios such as receiving college scholarships and options available if someone over saves. As always, the information in this podcast is a general over head view of the different options and limitations of a 529 plan, and we suggest meeting with your financial advisor and your accountant before making investment or tax decisions based on your specific situation. If this is something that your advisor hasn’t quite gotten the depth of, or maybe you don’t have a financial advisor, we at Vestia have a great team of advisors who help doctors with this and other investment decisions. You can reach out to us at myteam@vestia.com, and an advisor will be in touch to discuss your potential options. Thank you for listening and/ or watching and make sure you subscribe or follow so that you don't miss any future episodes. #doctors #physicians #investing #529plan #educationsaving #collegesaving #wealththatmatters
Vestia Consulting for Physician Innovators

Vestia Consulting for Physician Innovators
Welcome to the Doctor’s Eyes Only podcast, this weeks episode features Vestia President, Partner, and COO Brad Quick as he talks about his experience in the Orthopedic industry and how his background led to the beginnings of Vestia Consulting, a business that helps physician innovators bring their ideas and products to market. Brad’s extensive knowledge and experience are highlighted as he shares insights from his time at Zimmer Biomet, where he learned the challenges of getting products approved and launched quickly, and the benefits of partnering with external innovative shops to accelerate product development. This experience was the exact reason Brad was the perfect fit for Vestia Personal Wealth Advisors when they were needing someone to run the operations side of the business, and what also led to him being asked to serve as the President of the company. While choosing to be hands on in his role, attending conferences and partnering with advisors and their clients in Vestia’s Orthopedic Specialty Group, Brad discovered a need for surgeon innovators who have ideas for products, or who have begun developing products, to improve the quality of the work they do while serving patients. Through Vestia Consulting, Brad advises physicians on navigating the complex process of commercializing their innovations, from ideation to negotiating with major corporations, while helping them overcome obstacles, identify market opportunities, and maximize the potential of their innovations. A Day to Celebrate Doctors

A Day to Celebrate Doctors
In this special Doctor’s Day edition of the Doctor’s Eyes Only Podcast, Vestia Partner and CEO Lauren Oschman shares stories about her experiences with Doctor’s Day growing up with a dad who is a physician. As Lauren reflects on what it meant to her to see the gifts that patients gave her father in appreciation for the help they had received, she also shares a revelation in her own life after hearing a story about a stranger that appears at a neurosurgeon’s home. As Lauren talks about in the podcast. The neurosurgeon’s wife was doing her normal duties, helping with homework, orchestrating rides to sports practices, all while cleaning up after her kids, when there was a knock at the door. When she went to see who it was, she found a man standing there with take-out bags in his hand, delivering dinner to her family.  He said you don't know me, and we've never met, but one year ago today, I know that your husband didn't come home for dinner. And the reason I know that, is because he was at the hospital saving my life. So, on the one-year anniversary of thinking about what your husband did for me and about what he gave to me, I wanted to give your family dinner to say thank you for what you sacrificed, so that he could be there for me, and I could get more time with my family.  “It hit me like a ton of bricks. When I heard that story, I stopped in my tracks and I was like, Oh my gosh, I have been thinking about this all wrong… When I look back on my childhood, I think about the times that my dad wasn't there… Or maybe I wished I got a little bit more, but when he wasn't there, it was because he was literally giving people more life and he was giving family more time with their loved ones.” – Lauren Oschman  As we celebrate Doctor’s Day, we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts and encourage others to do the same. Because most of us are healthy and spend our time enjoying life, it is easy to forget the enormous impact doctors have on our communities. You keep us healthy, and you give us better lives. We see the sacrifice you make to fulfill your duty, and we are so thankful you make the choice to show up for your patients each and every day. We are beyond honored to partner with you and ease a little bit of the burden you shoulder so you can have more time making memories with those you love. So, on behalf of all of us at Vestia Personal Wealth Advisors, thank you for being our Superheroes in Lab Coats and Scrubs. If you are working or on call this Doctor’s Day (as we know many of you are), thank you for your dedication. If you have the day off, we hope you have an amazing day feeling celebrated by your communities, treasured by your loved ones, and enjoying your Wealth that Matters®. – From the recent Blog post titled, Happy Doctors Day to our Superheroes in Lab Coats and Scrubs! Retirement Account Rollovers and Consolidation for Physicians

Retirement Account Rollovers and Consolidation for Physicians
In this episode of the Doctor’s Eyes Only podcast, Vestia Partner and CEO Lauren Oschman provides guidance to physicians on consolidating multiple retirement accounts that may have been left behind at a previous employer after switching jobs. Lauren talks about many different options including consolidating assets into an IRA, rolling over to a new employer’s 401K or 403B, converting to a Roth IRA, leaving the account as-is, or cashing out (This is rarely recommended due to potential tax implications). Some of the important details that are covered include asset protection, fees, Backdoor Roth IRA eligibility, and the hassle of tracking multiple accounts.  Once again, as we have made known before, wee are not accountants. As financial advisors, we do often work closely with accountants to help with client tax strategy, but we are not accountants. So any of these tax specific topics talked about in this podcast, we will defer to the expertise of your accountant and recommend that you run any of these things by your accountant before you make a final decision.  Thank you for tuning in and like always, if you have any questions, or just need guidance on consolidating a number of accounts from past employers, send us an email at myteam@vestia.com, and an advisor will be in touch.  Investment advisory services offered through Vestia Personal Wealth Advisors, Vestia Retirement Plan Consultants, and Vestia Advisors, LLC. Financial Pain Points for Orthopedic Surgeons
Vestia Partner and President, Brad Quick CEPA® and Vestia Partner and Chief Growth Officer Kameron Helmuth CFP® ChFc® recently attended the Foundation for Physician Advancement course in Charlotte. While there, Kameron and Brad were able to speak with multiple doctors who contributed to the information in the Financial Pain Points for Orthopedic Surgeons.  An online survey was offered to all course participants in a recent Industry Course to gauge what topics would be presumed as the most critical financial pain points for Orthopedic Surgeons. 26 surgeons participated from varying institutions, subspecialties, and career status. Three questions were asked: 1.     When do you go into practice?  2.     How would you rate your financial knowledge? 3.     What do you feel are the most common financial pain points among Orthopedic Surgeons today?    In this episode of the Doctor’s Eyes Only Podcast, Kameron and Brad have a conversation about the most recent course for Foundation for Physician Advancement in Charlotte in which they talk about the process of gathering information by way of an online survey. After gathering all of the results, Brad and Kameron then created a white paper titled Building a Successful Practice - Charlotte 2024, Financial Pain Points for Orthopedic Surgeons, and delivered it to those that took the survey. The Business Version of You

The Business Version of You
Did you know that business owners actually pay taxes differently than most other individuals do? And most doctors have a stream of income or can easily have a stream of income that qualifies them to be taxed at least partially as business owners? If you're getting income that doesn't have taxes withheld, that's called 1099 income. That money comes in, it has not yet been taxed. It's your responsibility to pay the taxes to the government. It's not taken out for you. Because that comes in on the Schedule C on your tax return, your accountant will fill in a bunch of boxes with business expenses. Then what's left after those business expenses is what you end up paying taxes on as a business owner on that business income. In this episode of the Doctors Eyes Only Podcast, we talk about the different ways doctors can potentially take advantage of tax strategies to enhance their current investment plan.  We are not accountants. As a Financial Advisor, we do often work closely with accountants to help with client tax strategy, but we are not accountants. So any of these tax specific topics talked about in this podcast, we will defer to the expertise of your accountant and recommend that you run any of these things by your accountant before you make a final decision.  Investment advisory services offered through Vestia Personal Wealth Advisors, Vestia Retirement Plan Consultants, and Vestia Advisors, LLC. Doctors and Wealth That Matters®

Doctors and Wealth That Matters®
Hello everyone, welcome to another episode of the Doctors Eyes Only podcast, and today we're going to talk about what we at Vestia call Wealth That Matters®. In this episode, CEO and Partner Lauren Oschman talks about how Vestia strives to discover what matters to physician clients that is about more than money. Growing up in a household with a dad who worked long hours with no days off as an Interventional Cardiologist, Lauren understands the sacrifices that doctors make for their patients and the sacrifices their families make as well. Often times, doctors get in the mode of providing for their families and building an investment portfolio for that one day they can comfortably retire. When the thought arises of how much is needed to accomplish this, the answer is usually “more”.  As Lauren mentions in the episode, “Because I think for a lot of doctors, a lot of you are listening, you're very achievement oriented, you're very used to the answer being more, right? How much is enough? More. That's how you get to be where you're at, being a very accomplished physician. So one of our goals as we're onboarding new clients, as we're helping craft financial strategies, is to listen to all of these things that you want and to help you figure out how to get the most out of life today and also take care of your future self.” This is a very different view from a Financial Advisory perspective in which Lauren gives examples through stories about clients she has had conversations with where she didn’t recommend they invest more money and instead encouraged them to take that extra vacation to capitalize on the time when their kids are young. Lauren also talks about her own personal situation, being a mother of three young children and finding ways to be intentional with her time with her daughters and allowing them to hold her accountable to giving them the time they need. What is a Backdoor Roth IRA?

What is a Backdoor Roth IRA?
In this episode of the Doctor’s Eyes Only Podcast, brought to you by Vestia Personal Wealth Advisors, Partner and CEO Lauren Oschman talks about the benefits, drawbacks, and qualifications for a Backdoor Roth IRA. Lauren Oschman - I always go back to a story, so I actually work with a father and a daughter. The father is a retired physician, his daughter is currently a practicing physician who's working on accumulating her wealth and saving for her own retirement. So I started working with her father when he was on the precipice of retirement. He came to me, referred by his daughter, who had been a client of mine for a long time, and he said, Lauren, I've always done my investments myself and I would just love for you to be able to tell me, can I retire?  I started going through all of his accounts, and he had done a really really great job saving. He had been in a private practice, he had a lot of money put away in pre -taxed vehicles, so money that had never been taxed. And then anything he couldn't get into a pre -tax vehicle that wasn't a part of his spending plan, he was putting into a brokerage account. He never funded anything in the Roth bucket, right?  So we can kind of think about money in three buckets from a tax perspective, pre -tax, taxable, that would be your brokerage, and then tax -free, which would be your Roth IRA, under all of the current tax laws. He didn't have anything in the Roth bucket. He had saved really really well, so I was able to tell him that based on all of the calculations that I ran, it looked like he was in a good position to be able to retire. The big question mark, the thing that I could not assure him .. was that pre -tax money.. I don't know what's going to happen to tax rates over the next 20 years. Tax rates are not fixed. We could end up with new people making decisions in Congress. We could have new tax laws passed, and tax rates could actually go up. So he had the vast majority, probably 80% of his money, was in accounts that were subject to taxes as he takes his withdrawals.  A lot of these conversations about IRAs, Roth IRAs, the sequence of transactions to do the Backdoor Roth IRA does involve tax strategy and tax reporting. I am not an Accountant, I am a Financial Advisor, so please, any decision that you're going to make that is going to involve tax reporting, please run these things by your accountant to make sure that you have all of the information before you make decisions based on what makes sense for your situation.  The information covered and posted represents the views and opinions of the guest and does not necessarily represent the views or opinions of Vestia Advisors, LLC. For physicians who have dedicated years of rigorous training and education to reach their current professional status, this means addressing their unique insurance needs comprehensively. From the comfort of their homes to the risks they encounter on the road, doctors are exposed to a variety of potential liabilities that can threaten their financial well-being. Zach has more than 18 years of dedicated experience in the insurance industry and is incredibly well-versed in navigating the intricate world of personal insurance for physicians and surgeons. But way more important, like hugely more important, is that passwords should be unique." ~ Brian Quick [15:48] - "If your phone ever stops working mysteriously, like it's not ringing or not getting text messages, pay attention to that. Knowing Your Value in Negotiation with Emily Ast
Negotiation is a valuable skill that can bring your career to the next level. While we may know what we want on paper, navigating this conversation in practice seems daunting and unpredictable to many. But what if negotiation is not as scary as we were led to believe? It may be a muscle that needs training, but negotiation boils down to knowing your value, remaining transparent about your needs, and effectively communicating them.  In this episode, Kameron and Brad speak to Emily Ast, Owner and Attorney at Ast Physician Contracts who specializes in contract negotiations for employment and industry arrangements in the medical field. They discuss how Emily’s background as a competitive gymnast influenced her career path, why considering all currencies is crucial in contract negotiation, and what legal resources are available for orthopedic surgeons.  Emily talks with Kameron and Brad about the role of transparency in contract negotiation, her top negotiation tips, and the importance of speaking up for yourself to secure a contract that best fits your needs.  Key Takeaways [01:18] - An introduction to Emily Ast. It's really everybody's just trying to get to the best solution for everyone.” ~ Emily Ast [14:43] - “Consider all currencies. People zero in on the compensation number, the actual formula. There are other forms of compensation like signing bonuses, paid call, paying for CME courses you'd already be going to. If you're driving between multiple offices, it's appropriate to ask for a mileage reimbursement or for the practice to pay for a car lease.” ~ Emily Ast [41:54] - “Know your value.
