VSI Sporting Directors’ Podcast: Simon Wilson (Episode 5)
A must listen!  Insightful, educational, and and an inspiration that football clubs do operate with responsible owners capable of leading a football business. Simon Wilson, sporting director for Stockport county FC, sits down with James Cooper.  Simon discusses his journey into the role starting as an analyst with ProZone, before moving into professional football. Simon spent 10 years at Manchester City in a strategic leadership position before moving into the Sporting Director role at Sunderland FC and currently at Stockport County. Simon touches upon his development working in a multi-club ownership model at Manchester City and the vision and philosophy Stockport County are implementing to put the club in a more sustainable position for the community and future owners. It's not only Premier League clubs that have sporting directors, in fact there is an argument that the lower down the football pyramid you go, the greater the need for a sporting director with a clear remit to oversee the entire football function whilst understanding the business of football. Delegates on VSI executive education programmes have been from world leading sports organisations, such as The Premier League, The RFU, Premiership Rugby, The ECB, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool FC, Inter Miami FC, MLS, FIFA, and many more global sporting organisations.  As professional sport is moving into a new era of financial sustainability and governance around the globe, there has never been a greater time to develop strategic and operational leaders fit for purpose int he modern world.  VSI Executive Education is behind the world’s first MSc in Sports Directorship and MBA of a Sports Organisation programmes.
