Our Editor's Take

My Favorite Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark is a podcasting pioneer. It was one of the first-ever true crime podcasts. It was also the first popular one to combine true crime with jokes. Yet while the podcast is funny, the comedy is never disrespectful to the victims.

The show features both crimes and banter between cohosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. Karen is a professional comedian. Georgia is a real-life beauty school dropout who became an internet personality. The two have great chemistry together as they discuss compelling cases. No wonder My Favorite Murder is such a popular podcast. Listeners even call themselves "Murderinos."

Week after week, Karen and Georgia address one captivating mystery after the other. It's hard not to get attached to their endearing dynamic. Their spot-on delivery, empathy, and wit are a winning combination.

The podcast also discusses other topics beyond mystery murder. This the Hindenburg disaster, the theft of the Mona Lisa, and boxer Sonny Liston. They also host guests. Comedian Billy Eichner and talk show host Conan O'Brien have appeared on the show. The program's "minisodes" include listener contributions about their hometowns, including memorable crimes there.

Since the show's debut, it has grown way beyond the recording room. Kilgariff and Hardstark host sold-out live shows. They also published a New York Times #1 bestselling memoir, Stay Sexy Don't Get Murdered. In addition, the duo founded the Exactly Right podcast network. The network also hosts many other memorable podcasts.

In a typical podcast episode, each host will talk about one crime or interesting story. The topics may be separate, but they work well together. The episode "Symbolic Villains" was a fan favorite. It featured Baby Jessica and Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. Sid had a terrible home life before the Sex Pistols. His mother reportedly used him as a drug mule as a toddler. She even gave him heroin as a teenage birthday gift. So it wasn't a shock when he overdosed at age 21.

My Favorite Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark has one full episode, and one minisode, each week.
