19 - Designers And Marketers: There Is No Universal Symbol For Disabilities - With Aunia Kahn
As business work in design and marketing, representing disabilities has been challenging. There is always the question about the right or wrong way to properly include and represent the disabled community.Unfortunately, the default way web and graphic designers, as well as marketers represent the disabled community is by using the “Wheel Chair Symbol” also known as “The Universal Sign of Accessibility”.The truth is, there is “No Universal Symbol for Disabilities”.It is important for those in the design and marketing world to understand this. The disabled community does not have a symbol and we don’t want one. However, we do appreciate the “The Universal Sign of Accessibility” which helps us navigate the world better. Please stop using the “Wheel Chair Symbol” as a default graphic when dealing with topics based on disabilities for design, blogs, flyers, events, marketing, etc. Unless you are using it purely to represent accessibility options. Also, only 11.6 percent of people in the disabled community use wheelchairs, and 80% of disabilities are invisible. If you want to represent those with disabilities on a website, in graphic design and marketing, use real people. 1 and 4 people living in the united states have a disability so it is important that the disabled community is represented.View Show Notes on risevisible.comVisit Our WebsitePodcast PageFacebookInstagramLinkedIn

We take a page from the school of traditional marketing where we see the intrinsic value in all shades of growth, success, and investment that are presenting themselves right under your nose. In this episode, we discuss what branding is and what it is not, as well as why branding even matters. Generally, people associate branding with primarily logos and websites, but it is going far beyond that on many levels. If this topic interests you, take a listen below to the new podcast episode and learn how your branding or lack of branding is impacting your business. Show Notes3 Important Reasons Your Need BrandingYou need recognition. If someone goes to your website and has no idea who you are and what you do. You have lost a potential client. It’s that quick. 3-5 seconds on average. As a web designer for 20 years, I can tell you how quickly a person will leave a site if they have no idea what they are dealing with or have no easy way to interact with said site.Branding helps people know who to expect from you. If I market my web and graphic design business and brand it as such, people know they can come to me for that. Will clients come to me that want accounting, no. I am situated in a niche market, I proclaim what I do, I am branded as such which leaves no one to “try to figure it out”. They know what to expect from me.Creates loyal customers and referrals. Which creates growth and longevity in your business. If you provide a service or product without visible branding how can this be passed onto others with ease? How can I refer you? If you don’t have a logo, a website, social media, anything that showcases who you are that is concise and branded, you will get lost in the mix. 5 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS BRANDINGDo I have any branding? If I do, is it good branding?Does the brand relate to my target audience? Will they instantly "get it" without too much thought?Does the brand reflect the values that I want to represent to my customers? Why do you want your brand to represent in your industry? SHOW LINKS 5 Tips You Can Utilize Right Now To Help Your Business Adapt and Succeed SHOW QUOTES“A brand is no longer what we tell the consumer it is—it is what consumers tell each other it is.” – Scott Cook Visit Our WebsitePodcast PageFacebookInstagramLinkedIn
