#244 Serenity's Quest: Unveiling the Courageous Journey of An Anonymous Guest
Prepare yourself for a powerful and introspective episode of The Jar Podcast as we introduce our next guest who has chosen to remain anonymous. For the sake of the notes and staying anonymous we will call him X. Our initial plan to meet at the Abraham Lincoln library in Springfield, Illinois encountered a small hiccup when we realized the library was closed on Sundays. However, X quickly hopped into our trusty Jar van, and we embarked on a journey to the capital grounds in search of a tranquil shade tree. Finding the perfect spot beneath a majestic tree, with the towering capital building as our backdrop, we set up our recording equipment and settled in for a heartfelt conversation with X.As we chatted, it became apparent that X had been discreetly sipping from a water bottle, which he revealed contained alcohol. He bravely shared that he is battling alcoholism and, as of today, it is his final day of drinking before he embarks on a journey of recovery in rehab. The weight of this significant moment hung in the air, as X prepared himself mentally and emotionally for the challenging road ahead.Hailing from a small town in southern Illinois, surrounded by pig farms, tree farms, and corn farms, X's upbringing was rooted in rural life. However, his journey took him into the food industry, where he spent significant time in Chicago and Springfield. Unfortunately, these environments proved conducive to developing unhealthy drinking habits, providing a means to stay busy and mask his pain.Amidst X's personal struggles, he carries the weight of his parents' divorce, which involved a distressing incident where his father faked his own suicide. While X was young at the time and unaware of the full truth, over the years, he began to suspect that his father was gay. Coming from a strict, southern conservative Christian background, his father's struggle with his identity would have been an immense challenge. In addition to this, X is grappling with other traumas in his life, gradually working towards acknowledging and healing them.Throughout our conversation, X's profound wisdom and beautiful soul shone through. Despite the hardships he has faced, he possesses a deep love for communication and a fervent desire to share his message with others. X's hope is that his story serves as a reminder for people to approach alcohol with caution and seek help before it takes them too far down a destructive path.Join us on The Jar Podcast as we listen to X's captivating story and gain insight into his journey of self-discovery and recovery. Her home has a warm and vibrant atmosphere, with art taking over the walls, cool furniture, and an array of 100 small pots, succulents, and trinkets of art on her porch wall. He was also her sports coach for all of her sports growing up, and while she looks back fondly on her memories of Mobile, she had the desire to get out of the small town. We laughed as she shared that she didn't have any Chinese food until she was 17. She ended up in Memphis for school and then started a journey of fun and education that brought her to Australia, Europe, and ultimately achieving her doctoral degree, before finding her way back to Memphis. Along the way, she even became an author.Karen talked about the one that got away, who in the end turned out to be a blessing in disguise, and how this is so often the lesson in life. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Jazzett and Dwight at their newly reconstructed warehouse in downtown Memphis, called 99 Front St. This space will serve as the home of their new venture, Tru and Blu, a unique combination of a teahouse and art café. The name is a tribute to their twin boys, True and Blue, with whom they share a beautiful and heartbreaking story. As we sat across from them, Jazzett's runway-model-like stature and confident smile complemented Dwight's contemplative demeanor and impressive dreadlocks and beard. They have been together for two years, and their connection is palpable. They describe their love as divine and beautiful, a journey that has brought them together to heal, learn, and grow.Jazzett's life story is one of both fun and adventure as a runway model and of painful experiences, including sexual abuse and physical violence. On the other hand, Dwight was raised by a single mother and lost her to breast cancer when he was young. He found himself on a destructive path before becoming a father and ultimately a single parent. This was his turning point, which led him to escape his own domestic violence and grow as a person.Together, Jazzett and Dwight have been healing from their past traumas, growing together, and building their dreams. They are on a beautiful journey of learning more about each other and themselves, and they're excited to share their story with the world. Join us as we delve into the depths of The Jar with Jazzett and Dwight and discover the beauty and resilience of their spirits.Check out Jazz' facebook page, Jazzi LittleFor more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. #233 Unlearning to Relearn: My Journey of Self-Discovery Through Art with Deavon Smith-Collins
We had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Deavon Smith-Collins, in her cozy home in North Little Rock. Growing up, it was just her and her mom, and her grandparents in a small town in Arkansas. As her mom worked hard to provide for her, they moved around quite a bit, and Deavon attended Christian schools in Little Rock and Fayetteville. While she learned a lot in these schools, she also realized there was a lot that needed to be unlearned, and she strives to be the kind of adult that she wished she had in her life growing up. Some of her biggest heroes were teachers, and now she finds herself in the same profession as an art teacher in a local school for the last few years.During our conversation, Deavon opened up about her experience of being sexually assaulted in college. She shared that she only recently began to unpack and come to grips with the impact it had on her and her family. It has been a difficult journey, but she hopes that by coming out and sharing her story, she can inspire others to have the courage to speak out as well. It's an interesting time in Deavon's life, as she and her mom are facing new challenges. Her mother is returning home to take care of her grandmother, who is suffering from Alzheimer's, and Deavon is leaving Little Rock soon to follow her heart and chase love.Deavon also shared that the hardest part of her journey has been saying goodbye to her fourth-grade students, who welcomed her as their art teacher since kindergarten. Saying goodbye to them was the most painful part of her journey so far. Join us on The Jar as Deavon navigates through her story and shares her experiences, hopes, and dreams. For more of Deavon check out her Art: https://linktr.ee/jackkofalltradezz For more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. #232 From Rock Bottom to New Beginnings: My Quest for Sobriety and Inner Peace with Sara Jones
We had the pleasure of meeting Sara Jones on a sunny Saturday morning in her cozy home in Little Rock. Her big, warm personality filled the room as soon as we walked in, and it was easy to see why her parents have stayed happily married all these years. Sara is the youngest of her siblings and was a bit of a surprise baby to her big Mississippi family. Growing up, her family was deeply spiritual and Christian, but they always encouraged Sara to follow her own path and discover her own beliefs. These days, Sara is enjoying playing the role of auntie to her sister's kids, and she recently moved to Little Rock for work.Sara found herself working as an executive assistant, which seems to be the perfect fit for her bubbly personality and organizational skills. We were excited to learn that she's also exploring her creative side, as she recently wrote a book and enjoys painting in her spare time. During our conversation, Sara opened up about her recent sobriety journey and how she got there. She shared that she's always been a hopeless romantic, but her relationships always seemed to end in disappointment and heartbreak. It wasn't until she hit rock bottom that she realized she needed to make a change in her life.Sara also spoke about the profound insights that her brother, who has special needs, has given her. She shared how he has taught her to appreciate the little things in life and to be grateful for every moment. As we delved deeper into Sara's story, we laughed and cried with her as she shared her experiences and struggles. The Jar provided a safe space for Sara to open up and share her journey, and we were honored to be a part of it.Check our Sara's Links:Instagram: https://instagram.com/esseejones?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA==Vital Apparel discount link: https://vtlapparel.com/discount/EsseentiallyWorkout clothing brand that donates to mental health research My book, Daily Dose of Melancholy: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/daily-dose-of-melancholy-essee-jones/1142099558?ean=9798886802979&fbclid=PAAaYzrYs9qNWkVd9Me9w3yeYovqq_myEYBwAb53EIq_NuPzvXRYJVBRD_jxsTherapy and medication management scheduling for the state of Arkansas through Chenal Family Therapy: 501-781-2230 For more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. #231 Shattered But Never Broken: The Car Accident That Shaped My Life with Jeff Jucha
We meet our next guest, Jeff Jucha, at the Labyrinth Studios in downtown Little Rock. We would like to give a big shout-out to Marcus, the owner of the studio, for generously allowing us to use his space for the interview. Jeff is a Little Rock native who grew up with two caring parents, an above-ground pool, two Chevy Corsicas in the driveway, and of course, two golden retrievers. We laughed at this idyllic perception of his life, which in many ways, Jeff had, until the age of 15 when he was involved in a horrific car accident that took the lives of three people, including the person sitting next to him. Jeff was left with a mangled body that took years to recover physically. The physical recovery, the numerous operations, and setbacks, including almost losing his leg to infection, challenged Jeff, maybe even more so than his physical injuries but ultimately forged him mentally. Jeff found himself in the gym business and then in the health business, including coaching gym owners. He has a passion for helping others achieve their goals and live their best life. The Jar takes Jeff through some profound questions around love and relationships that you won't want to miss. His story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and how we can overcome even the most challenging obstacles in life. For more of Jeff, Check out:His TED TALK: https://youtu.be/khcap2Qnak8His instagram: @jrjucha For more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. #230 MS as a Catalyst: My Mission to Inspire Others with Michael Villines
We met our next guest, Michael Villines, in Baton Rouge, where he currently lives. As we arrived in the parking lot, Michael hustled from work to the interview, sporting a warm smile, a big heart, and a noticeable limp. As we learned during the story, Michael was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) a few years ago.Michael is a young man of about 30 years old who hails from the Toledo area, where he lived for 15 years until his father moved them to Idaho for a few more. He grew up being homeschooled, and he's an interesting person with a driven and powerful ego that fuels his aspirations. To hear his journey and then the speed bump in the road of an MS diagnosis, you can't help but empathize with a young man struggling to reconcile his new identity and reality.Despite the diagnosis, Michael has done quite well for himself, launching himself into a journey of healing himself and helping others through coaching. He ended up in Louisiana on a job referral from his father. Michael wanted to become a plant manager, a plant engineer, like his dad, so he packed up his car and drove to Baton Rouge.Through some ups and downs of his young career, Michael received his diagnosis, and he has done a lot of growing up in these last eight years. He says he has learned that things happen for you, not to you, and when things happen for us, we find out what our purpose is. Only then can we begin to live up to our full potential for what God created us for. Join us as we sit with Michael and hear the story of a young man in the beginning of his career finding out that he has another purpose, a challenge to overcome, and a message to share. For more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. #229 From Fatherless to Fearless: My Quest of Giving Others What I Was Missing Growing Up with Thaddeus McLarin
We meet our next guest, Thaddeus McLaurin, in his home in Gonzales, Louisiana, a new community just outside Baton Rouge. Thaddeus is a Baton Rouge native. He grew up in a single-parent home, spending a lot of time with his mom, which gave him a quiet childhood. As a self-described geeky and nerdy boy, he spent summers with his grandma and a lot of time at church, but he didn't have a close relationship with his father, who passed away when Thaddeus was young.Feeling the absence of a father figure, Thaddeus built his own nonprofit focused on young black kids. He wanted to teach them to think, learn life skills, and become more well-rounded humans. His greatest joy comes from giving and helping others. During the interview, Thaddeus shared an interesting take on the question of how love has healed him. He believes that love is self-love and that he has learned to value and love himself, which has given him strength.Thaddeus talked a lot about his faith and how he is a "Jesus guy" who believes in the Alpha Omega. He tries to give to others to a fault and is always striving to become the best person he can be. Join us, The Jar, as we sit down with Thaddeus McLaurin in his home in Gonzales, Louisiana, and hear his life journey, his beliefs, and his wisdom. #228 Breaking Barriers: An Inspiring Story of Overcoming Obstacles with Simone O Higginbotham
We meet our next guest, Simone Higginbotham, in her office at the Scotlandville Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit that she has been involved with for over 30 years. Simone has an interesting story of how she got to where she is today.Simone grew up in Baton Rouge, near a place called Zion City, also known as the City of Churches. It is a 100-year-old African American community where her mother taught her that she was never too poor to dream big. Simone grew up in a small home with her brother, her mom, and her grandma. She has been married and divorced, has one daughter, and one granddaughter.Simone shares with us her experience of being in a ten-year-long abusive relationship with her husband, which taught her a lot about herself. Although those ten years were terrible, it made her who she is today, and she wouldn't change it for the world.Simone's mother had a lot of wisdom to impart on her children. They used to fight at the breakfast and dinner table, but her mother always reminded them that at some point, they would only have each other, and today they are best friends, talking at least once a day.Simone's philosophy on life is rich and insightful. She believes in loving others with no limits, accepting them for who they are, not how you want them to be. If you can't help somebody, don't hurt them. Be humble because it will take you far. And always leave a place better than you found it.Simone's work with the Scotlandville Community Development Corporation is a testament to her philosophy. The nonprofit's mission is to promote economic, educational, and community development in Scotlandville and surrounding areas. Simone has been instrumental in the success of the organization, which has provided job training, affordable housing, and other programs to help uplift the community.Join us as Simone shares her beautiful story and insights as she works her way through the jar.For more of Simone check out:https://legendawardsbr.com/www.scotlandvillecdc.org For more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. #227 Transcendentalism and Healing: My Path to Inner Peace with Rachel Laymoun
We have the pleasure of meeting Rachel Lamont at her childhood home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is one of four siblings and describes her childhood as great, despite growing up in a small church bubble with her single mom who was a coastal geologist. The Louisiana Mississippi river basin was where Rachel found her home. Rachel's values are aligned with transcendentalism, and as she raises her own daughter, her relationship with her mom evolves and they both reflect on how she was raised. Rachel's father is now more present in her life, as their family continues to grow with grandchildren. However, Rachel moved back home a few years ago, which was and remains a difficult transition because this is also the source of much of her pain and trauma. She was molested in her home by her brother's childhood friend. When that friend was going to stand up at her brother's wedding, Rachel was forced to come out and share what happened to her. This was the beginning of her healing journey. Rachel is now an artist and poet, using her first book to articulate her growth together with her first husband, which ultimately led to their divorce. She shares that there is no right or wrong in relationships, just a realization that sometimes we're not meant for each other. Rachel's journey has not been easy, but she has used her experiences to grow and evolve into the person she is today. She shares her story with vulnerability and honesty, inspiring others to face their own pain and trauma with courage and strength. Join us as Rachel navigates through The Jar and her story unfolds beautifully, reminding us of the power of resilience and growth. For more of Rachel check out:Her book: Salty Lemon: journey from salty to sweet https://a.co/d/eRU2skmI’m on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, & Twitter @check4newgrowth For more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast.
