New Day

Lemonada Media

By audience request, New Day is now moving to 3 times a week! On each episode, we’ll find new ways to make life a little better. So many of us are suffering in silence. Maybe you're successful but miserable at work. Perhaps you have the perfect family on Instagram, but you're at each other's throats IRL. Maybe you can’t even put your finger on what feels weird - but you know you deserve more. Whatever it is, you’re not alone. I’m Claire Bidwell Smith, author, therapist, and grief expert. On Mondays and Wednesdays on New Day, I share easy actions you can implement to make meaningful changes in your life, and also answer your questions. And on Friday, end your week with an interview with an amazing guest who has experienced something difficult in their lives that you can use to help you navigate challenging situations in yours. No one has all the answers. But New Day from Lemonada Media is here to help improve your life one episode at a time.

Our Editor's Take

The host of the New Day podcast, Claire Bidwell Smith, has decades of experience when it comes to grief and anxiety. It all started when both of her parents received a cancer diagnosis when Smith was only 14 years old. When she was 18, Smith lost her mother to the disease. Her father died not too long after when Smith was 25.

There is no doubt that this traumatizing experience contributed to her career choice. It also contributed to the creation of the New Day podcast. Not only does Smith have a master's in clinical psychology, but her specialty is grief therapy. Her first book on the topic was a memoir titled The Rules of Inheritance. She continued to write three more books about the subject. She also published articles in countless newspapers and magazines. Those include The New York Times, Psychology Today, and The Washington Post.

As much as Smith is an expert on loss, the podcast New Day is not limited to that realm. The therapist carries everything she's learned by dealing with grief into general life advice for anyone feeling low. With this podcast, she wants to help the listeners create a life worth living. She offers this practical advice in three episodes per week.

In the shorter, solo episodes, Smith offers tips to help make life easier. These are small steps that the listeners can take if they are not happy with their everyday reality. For instance, it explains how to not reach out for the phone first thing in the morning. Other episodes show how one can set short-term goals and actually achieve them. Smith also explains how to start a successful gratitude practice.

In the longer episodes, Smith conducts honest, meaningful conversations. She talks to experts like death doulas or marriage therapists. But she also speaks to comedians, authors, and actors like Lena Dunham and Ricki Lake. Every New Day guest has a fascinating life experience to share. Smith uses each one to educate the listeners in a compassionate and caring way.

Revisiting How Does It Feel to Be Vulnerable in Front of the World? With Lena Dunham
Putting yourself out there — the good, the bad, the ugly — in the social media age can be a high-risk, high-reward endeavor, to put it mildly. Few people know that quite as well as writer, director, producer, and actor Lena Dunham. Lena shot to superstardom at only 24 years old when her hit HBO show “Girls” debuted in 2012 and has been living her life very much in the public eye ever since. Lena tells Claire about her lifelong love of self-expression and creativity, how being so open about the hard things in her life actually helps her heal, and how her relationship with womanhood, grief, and loss intersects with her writing. Plus, Lena and Claire discuss how early experiences shaped their views on Roe v. Wade.   Want to connect? Revisiting How Can I Accept My Body and My Fears? With BJ Miller
Thirty years ago, Dr. BJ Miller had an accident that changed his life forever. He was out late one night messing around with his college buddies, jumped up on a train car, and was electrocuted with 11,000 volts of electricity. BJ went on to lose both legs and most of one arm. He spent a year in physical recovery and longer in emotional and psychological recovery. But all of these experiences led him to where he is today: interviewed by Oprah; profiled by “The New York Times Magazine”; and a leading figure in the death and dying realm. This week’s practice is all about accepting our bodies — and our fears. As BJ Miller says, “The goal isn’t to become fearless. The goal is to learn how to live with fear.”   Want to connect? Loving ourselves is not easy.
