Our Editor's Take

Therapy for Black Girls is a podcast about self-love and growth. Dr. Joy Harden Bradford hosts the show. She founded a mental health platform of the same name as this podcast.

Podcast host Dr. Bradford is an advocate for Black women's mental health. The psychologist has written articles for the New York Times and The Washington Post. She wrote the book Sisterhood Heals: The Transformative Power of Healing in Community.

The Therapy for Black Girls podcast focuses on the intersection of mental health and pop culture. It invites listeners to go inward and outward when working on their mental health. Dr. Bradford discusses the effect of trauma on the brain. She sits down with Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin to talk about imposter syndrome. The host invites Dr. Thema Bryant to explain what happens when faith and mental health don't align.

Dr. Bradford recognizes that pop culture is a mirror. It reflects everyday people's struggles. She interviews Kerry Washington, who plays Paige Alexander in Hulu's Unprisoned. From there, the conversation evolves to include parenting attachment styles. She meets with Carla Banks-Waddles, the producer for Bel-Air. They talk about the unique struggles of Black women in the workplace.

The host also provides concrete strategies for overcoming challenges. She talks about the benefits of sound meditation and breathwork. She describes what a healthy friendship looks like. The host explores birdwatching for stress relief. She also advises on coping after a layoff.

Therapy for Black Girls also includes “TBG University.” These episodes focus on the unique challenges of college students. “TBG Library” episodes are for book lovers. In those, Dr. Bradford sits down with authors of recent books.

The show's durability is a testament to its value as a resource for Black women. It's no surprise that Therapy for Black Girls is the recipient of prestigious prizes. It won a Webby Award in 2021 and an NAACP Image Award in 2023. However, listeners should consult a real-life professional to implement the advice on this show.

TBG Library: "You Get What You Pay For"
It’s time to make some space on your bookshelf for a new addition because we’re back with another TBG Library pick. Today’s pick is the debut book of essays by award-winning author Morgan Parker, titled, “You Get What you Pay For.” Morgan Parker is a poet, novelist, and author of works such as the young adult novel Who Put This Song On? and the poetry collection Magical Negro, which won the 2019 National Book Critics Circle Award. In You Get What You Pay For, Morgan traces the difficulty and beauty of existing as a Black woman through American history, from the foundational trauma of the slave trade all the way up to Serena Williams and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Morgan joins me today to discuss what it means to experience hypervisibility as a Black woman regardless of class, how as a teenager she advocated for her own mental health with her parents, and the ways in which conversations with her therapist influence her writing, and vice versa.  Resources & Announcements Visit our Amazon Store for all the books mentioned on the podcast. Session 340: Starting to Sew
There are an endless amount of studies that show how hobbies can be beneficial to our mental health and wellness. However, it can be understandably difficult to choose what hobby to take on, or even know where to start. If this sounds like you, then don’t fret, because in this first part of our January Jumpstart mini-series, we’re highlighting sewing and breaking down everything you need to know in order to make it your new year hobby.  Joining us for this conversation is Lisa Woolfork, a scholar, sewist, community organizer, and podcaster. She is the founder of Black Women Stitch, the sewing group where Black Lives Matter. She is also the host and producer of Stitch Please, a weekly audio podcast that centers Black women, girls, and femmes in sewing. Lisa and I chatted about the supplies you should invest in as a beginner sewist, how you can make time for sewing in your busy life, and how sewing can teach you lessons in self-compassion and forgiveness. About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Session 339: 2023 Astrology Reflections & Considerations for 2024
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. As we stand on the precipice of a new year, it's a perfect time to pause, reflect, and set our intentions for the journey ahead — and what better way to do that than through astrology? Joining me today to help decode the cosmic currents is TBG’s resident astrologer and returning guest, Mecca Woods. Mecca is a New York City-based astrologer and author. In our conversation, Mecca provides us with astrological context for some of the biggest pop culture events of the year, explains the significance of this year’s various transits and retrogrades, and shares how we can integrate the astrological lessons from 2023 into our aspirations for 2024.   Resources & Announcements Shop our "Take Good Care" Holiday Merch line! TBG U: Navigating Helicopter Parents

TBG U: Navigating Helicopter Parents
Congratulations, you’ve been accepted into the inaugural class of Therapy for Black Girls University. Whether you’re packing for a new year on campus, thinking through your gap year, enrolling in a community college, or grabbing your stoles for graduation, TBG U is here to help you thrive at this stage of your life and beyond. Winter Break has either commenced or is about to commence at most universities. If you’re a student, then you know that the transition of having your own dorm room and being able to go out whenever you want to coming home and having a curfew can be a rough experience. For this month’s episode, I wanted to put together a roundtable discussion with other college students to affirm and share our own experiences navigating our relationships with our loved ones in college. Today's episode is titled Navigating Helicopter Parents.  What's a helicopter parent? A helicopter parent is a parent who pays very close attention to their child's experiences and problems, especially at educational institutions. Joining me for this discussion are Zoe Rose and Heaven Holloway. Zoe is a junior Journalism Major and English Minor attending Hampton University. She currently works as a writer for HER Campus. Heaven is a current grad student earning her Master’s of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy. She recently graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in African American Studies.  In our conversation today, we lament the woes of having helicopter parents, provide tips for students trying to set healthy boundaries with their caregivers, and share some of the upsides of having an involved parent.    Where to Find Our Guests Zoe Instagram Heaven Instagram   Make sure to follow us on social media: Instagram TikTok   Interested in being a part of a future TBG U episode or suggesting a topic for us to discuss, send us a note HERE.  Order a copy of Sisterhood Heals for you and your girls HERE.    Our Production Team Executive Producers: Dennison Bradford & Maya Cole Howard Producers: Fredia Lucas & Ellice Ellis Production Intern: Zariah Taylor TBG University Host & Coordinator: Jayna EllisSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
