Imagine sitting at your desk at work, a day like any other. All of a sudden you hear a rumbling that gets louder, and louder. Then you look out the window and see it: a massive tank (yes - TANK), covered in guns, coming straight towards your office. You get outside just in time to see this thing completely flatten your building to the ground, then drive away. Um… WHAT? That’s exactly what happened in 2004 to the people in Granby, Colorado. Marvin Heemeyer, a local man, was angry at most people in town about a bunch of different nonsense, so he decided to take revenge by spending more than a year modifying a bulldozer into a weaponised war-like tank, which he then drove all over town for several hours destroying everything in his wake. As you do. Local businesses, the town hall, the library, even the police station - all flattened by the Killdozer. And because this thing was indestructible (bullet-proof, bomb-proof, unbreakable steel), there was nothing the police could do, but watch helplessly and hope something - anything - would stop it. It literally got to the point where the army considered dropping a bomb on it so strong it would also destroy the entire town. So what stopped the Killdozer in the end? It's Just The Gist  - "F*cking White People" Edition; The story of the 1981 film ROAR. A tale of how a rich naive Hollywood couple spent over a decade making a movie that starred them, their kids and 150 lions, tigers, leopards, panthers, ALLL the big cats. The movie was pitched as a "family comedy", but is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous films of all time. Roar starred Tippy Hedron (Star of Hitchcock's The Birds and others) her daughter Melanie Griffiths, and the rest of their family. The plot is broadly "we can save the world/animal kingdom/lions and tigers etc are all big friendly besties who just are misunderstood and we can live with them in harmony". Sounds cute in theory, maybe in adorable cartoons, but filming with 150 big cats gives very different results. Turns out, big cats gunna big cat; the films credits say no animals were harmed in the making of the movie (lies lol), but they don't say anything about how many PEOPLE were mauled, scalped, attacked, and generally not treated as one would hope to be treated at work. In 1987, San Diego police discovered the bodies of 37 people in a house. They all had matching haircuts, matching outfits, and infamously - matching Nike sneakers. These were the members of the Heaven’s agate cult, and they had decided to ‘graduate’ from their human forms, so they could ride the Hale-Bopp comet to Heaven. Led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles (also called ‘Ti and Do’), Heaven’s Gate initially seemed like a bunch of of eccentric alien believers, until they orchestrated one of the most shocking mass suicides in modern history. We told the story of the 'Trashman' yacht sinking way back in 2021, and since then it often pops up as an 'all-time favourite' mention. Oh the humanity! They called it "the Titanic of the sky”. It was the length of five Olympic sized swimming pools and would fly a few hundred metres above the ground transporting wealthy passengers from one side of the Atlantic Ocean to the other, and came complete with a dining room, a Sunday prayer service and even a smoking room.  But it was essentially a bunch of hydrogen-filled balloons floating in the sky that could catch fire the moment they were exposed to even a small spark...which is exactly what happened on May 6th 1937, when the Hindenburg's 63rd voyage from Frankfurt to New Jersey ended in disaster. The Hindenburg was the largest airship ever built and its crash remains one of the most famous aircraft disasters in history, thanks to the graphic footage of the explosion and the chilling radio commentary of reporter Herbert Morrison.
