Find Calm Here Community Strategy

Deb Schell

Welcome to the Find Calm Here Podcast, I’m your host, Deb Schell. On this podcast, I share conversations I have with creatives and community-builders who share what's worked in the process of building, launching, and growing a paid online community. During the episode, we talk about tech tools that support community-building in onboarding, how to cultivate conversations, and encourage members to connect, participate, and invite others to join. The strategies that are discussed can be used on any online platform and are focused on offering a great member experience and help others transform. We love people and gravitate towards helping others as community-builder. My goal is to help you find calm in any stage of your community-building process to lead your network with joy, energy, and abundance.
Episode 61: Find Calm co-creating community content with Suzi Hunn
In this episode, Suzi Hunn shares her community-building journey. She's the founder of Teach Your Thing, since 2017 Suzi has been helping small businesses amplify their impact. Her specialty is working with clients to distill their knowledge into engaging courses, workshops, and webinars. She also advises to charge for a pilot but at a steep discount, to still hold value and motivation. 20:30: Suzi covers lessons she’s learned, including testing three different platforms: Thinkific, Kajabi, and Mighty Networks.30:15: Suzi gives tips for course creation. Allowing people to talk is key, as she uses a flipped-classroom approach where the homework is meetings to discuss the course work.Want to start your own podcast?Buzzsprout gets your show listed on every major podcast platform. Episode 60: Find Calm making connections with Todd Nilson
In today's episode, I’m excited to introduce Todd Nilson, President of Clocktower Advisers. He’s been working in online communities and digital workspaces for most of his professional career with his earliest experience facilitating discussion in forums for multi-player games. Since then he’s worked with dozens of companies helping them devise a successful strategy for the online communities they want to build. He helps clients focus on the alignment of community and business goals by helping leaders understand the factors that have the biggest influence on building a successful online platform. Todd’s led transformational community collaborative technology projects for brands such as Activision, Facebook, Truth Initiative, and many more. You can check out his free resources on his website. Show notes:5:03: Todd starts by giving a background on his various careers, with a commonality of making connections with people and building communities.13:03: Discussing the value of making connections, Todd says a key is being unafraid put himself out there to connect and reconnect with people. Part of it is also connecting other people outside of yourself and seeing ideas take fire. 20:45: “You have that moment where people catch fire with an idea, and that for me is the joy of doing this kind of work. Because when it happens, you’re on the top of the world.”23:52: Deb and Todd discuss balancing community and consulting work. He steps into his own community when needed but generally doesn’t do day-to-day tasks because of being project-based.30:14: Todd touches on a key to prioritization: you can’t do everything at once. Also, that the downside of automation removes some of the key personal connections.31:31: “We can’t master every channel at once. We can’t do everything at once. Go deep on one thing. Get really good at one thing and then expand from there.”43:57: Todd closes with the biggest lesson learned to help his career, that the more you connect to inner desires and beliefs, the better starting point of designing a community to get off the ground.Want to start your own podcast?Buzzsprout gets your show listed on every major podcast platform. In addition, he leads Inner Circle Masterminds and an Accelerated Growth Coaching program.Ray says, “There is an infinite number of ways to "get more sales" in your business. That's what we teach.”Show notes:3:14: Ray begins with what he does now, including how his first community he started on Discourse, before pivoting after gaining a clear strategy.7:55: Deb and Ray discuss the benefits of having a clear, niche audience to target. Episode 49: Find Calm validating your online community offers with Hudson Phillips
In this episode of the Find Calm Here Podcast, Hudson Phillips, the host of ScriptBlast, shares insights on how he discovered community, why he launched his community on the Mighty Networks, and how he’s learned so much in just a year of hosting this online community. His community ScriptBlast brings together screenwriters who struggle with navigating the ups and downs of the journey to help them write with ease and joy. As an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker, Hudson has produced the feature film This World Alone, released in May of this year. With this experience and as the Creative Director for Uplink Marketing, he brings over 25 years of design, branding, copywriting, and marketing experience to the communities he leads.  With his community-building experience, he also supports Village Canopy Life, an online community working to transform the lives of children and communities in rural Kenya. In this episode we discuss: 2:37: Phillips begins by explaining what got him interested in community building: 16 years of struggling with breaking into the screenwriting world and not feeling like he had a safe space to talk about struggles. ScriptBlast started as a social media account, but already being part of a Mighty Network, he made the switch.11:35: Deb and Phillip compare the passive nature of social media to an active community. Phillip touches on how by listening to his community, he was able to alleviate the pressure of creating content when what the community wanted was engaging events.15:20: Phillip talks about ScriptBlast, his screenwriting community, and CanopyLife, a non-profit client community that runs an entrepreneurial school in Kenya. He also touches on re-assessing goals as to why the group exists when managing engagement expectations.22:09: There are many factors that go into community engagement, as Phillip discusses people who prefer being silent observers and also the seasonality of summer months being quiet while people are busy and traveling.Learn more about Find Calm Here Subscribe to the Find Calm Here Community Newsletter to learn more community-building tips, resources, and upcoming LIVE events to help you build, launch, and grow your community!Deb Schell is the founder of Find Calm Here LLC, an online consulting agency supporting entrepreneurs, founders, creators, and speakers as they build, launch, and grow a paid online membership.
