On the Line - A Story of Class, Solidarity and Two Women's Epic Fight to Start a Union - Daisy Pitkin
On today’s episode I have the pleasure to speak with author Daisy Pitken about her new book titled, On the Line - A story of class, solidarity, and Two Women’s Epic Fight to Build a Union. In her book, Daisy recounts the story of a grueling 5 yearlong bottom-up campaign she was involved in to help unionize industrial laundry workers in Phoenix, Arizona.  This book is both riveting and intimate and paints a humanizing portrait of the American labor movement.  We begin our conversation by learning about the hazardous jobsite conditions that drove these primarily Latino workers to seek union representation in the first place, and how the multinational corporate owned cleaning firms deployed strong arm, union busting tactics in an attempt to squash their organizing efforts. Next, we’ll look into the role professional union organizers play in guiding those who seek representation and analyze the differences in what’s at stake for both.    Later Daisy will elaborate on her relationship with rank-and-file activist Alma Gomez Garcia who she met on the campaign, and why she feels Alma’s unshakable courage and resolve makes her one of the gutsiest fighters she’s ever known. And we’ll end our conversation by unpacking the underlying personal attributes that are needed to survive a years long campaign and how true transformation and growth can be achieved while doing so. This is one of my favorite interviews to date and I hope you can help share Daisy’s message of inspiration with those who you think may benefit from it.The Show NotesDaisy Pitkinhttps://www.daisypitkin.net/Bookshop.orghttps://bookshop.org/books/on-the-line-a-story-of-class-solidarity-and-two-women-s-epic-fight-to-build-a-union-9781643750712/9781643750712Grit Nation  Webpagehttps://www.gritnationpodcast.comWin Grit Nation Merchhttps://mailchi.mp/c28da31260b8/grit-nation-podcast-sign-up-pageEmail comments or suggestions to:joe@gritnationpodcast.comGrit Nation is a proud member of the Labor Radio Podcast Networkhttps://www.laborradionetwork.org/ NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NW 6 states + 29k members strong!!Union Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home. April Fools Day 2022 Special Episode - Brian Lousy
Welcome to Grit Nation. I’m Joe Cadwell the host of the show, and in this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with jobsite foreman, self-taught communication expert and author of two books on construction leadership, Brian Lousy.Brian landed on the literary scene with a thud in early 2016 with his book, The Mind-Readers Guide to Supervision, in which he introduced the practice of managing construction projects by intentionally holding back production goals and expectations from his crews. In this book Brian promotes a supervisory style that requires workers to use their ability to mindread or guess what their foreman or supervisor’s thoughts are, in order to get their work done. Now after selling nearly a half- dozen copies, he is back with his second work titled, Git-er Did Dummy: A Guide to Leadership the Lousy Way. In Git-er Did Dummy, Brian again introduces a unique and unconventional style of leadership, by claiming that a crew’s loyalty and respect can be achieved by using the hazing, belittling, and dismissive behavior techniques taught in his book. We’ll open our conversation by learning why Brian wanted to write Get-er Did and the philosophy behind it. Next, we’ll discuss why Brian feels most leadership programs are a waste of time and why he invented the acronym R.A.G.E to deal with conflict resolution on the jobsite and at home.Brian will then explain why effective leadership communication shouldn’t rely so much on calm, rational and respectful discourse, but more on the volume of your voice. And we end our conversation by learning why Brian believes derogatory name calling on the job can be an effective tool in inspiring others to reach their fullest potential. And in case you're still  wondering if this is real. It's not. Dirty Work - Eyal Press
Welcome to Grit Nation. In this episode I have the pleasure of speaking with journalist, professor of sociology and author Eyal Press. Eyal’s latest book titled Dirty Work – Essential Jobs and the Hidden Toll of Inequality in America, addresses the morally troubling work that society silently condones and the hidden class of workers who do it.  Eyal and I begin our conversation by discussing the origins of the term Dirty Work and how the unconscious mandate it reveals is as prevalent today in contemporary American life as it was in Nazi occupied World War 2 Germany.  Eyal will then explain the physical and mental toll dirty work jobs take on the people who perform them as he shares the many personal stories he encountered while doing research for his book. From mental health care professionals working in state and federal penal systems, to aerial drone pilots conducting remote air strikes and workers on the kill floors of industrial slaughterhouses, Eyal unfolds a tale that is simultaneously gut-wrenching, powerful, and provocative. Later we’ll discuss the roll organized labor unions can play in de-stigmatizing dirty work, by challenging the systemic socio-economic and moral inequality structure that so strongly divides our nation. And we’ll end our conversation by exploring the nature of the implicit social contract around dirty work; so we can better understand who does the work, why it is done how we can re-shape the story it tells about us as a society. The Show NotesEyal Presshttps://www.eyalpress.com/Grit Nation  Webpagehttps://www.gritnationpodcast.comJoin the Grit Nation MVP Teamhttps://mailchi.mp/c28da31260b8/grit-nation-podcast-sign-up-pageFollow Grit Nation on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/gritnationpodcast/Email comments or suggestions to:joe@gritnationpodcast.comGrit Nation is a proud member of the Labor Radio / Podcast Networkhttps://www.laborradionetwork.org/ NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NW 6 states + 29k members strong!!Union Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home. Trade Apprenticeships - Frank Manzo
Welcome to Grit Nation, The Building Trades Podcast. On today’s episode I will be talking with returning guest, Frank Manzo, from the Illinois Economic Policy Institute. This time around Frank and I discuss building trades apprenticeships. We’ll start our conversation by looking into how the Illinois Economic Policy Institute gathers the data needed to create fair, unbiased, and fact-based comparisons of apprenticeship programs across the US.Next, we’ll unpack how employer funded non-union apprenticeships stack up against member supported union programs. And why a graduate of a non-union apprenticeship earns on average18,000 dollars less per year than their union counterpart.Later, we’ll discuss the numerous similarities in income earning potential, diversity and inclusion rates, as well as other socio-economic outcomes when Frank juxtaposes a building trades journey level certification earned from a union apprentice program to that of a traditional 4-year college degree. And we’ll finish our conversation by learning why states with strong union apprentice programs, in addition to prevailed wage laws have worksites that are more productive, safer, and are better value for the taxpayer. This episode shines a bright light on the many misconceptions surrounding careers in the blue-collar trades and redefines what it means to have a degree that can’t be easily outsourced and will provide a pathway to professional and financial success in the working middle-class of America and Canada. The Show NotesIllinois Economic policy Institutehttps://illinoisepi.org/Great video with Frank talking about apprenticeshipshttps://youtu.be/BhULgiZmG7gJoin the Grit Nation MVP Teamhttps://mailchi.mp/c28da31260b8/grit-nation-podcast-sign-up-pageFollow Grit Nation on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/gritnationpodcast/Email comments or suggestions to:joe@gritnationpodcast.comGrit NW is a proud member of the Labor Radio / Podcast Networkhttps://www.laborradionetwork.org/ NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NW 6 states + 29k members strong!!Union Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home. Worked Over - Jamie McCallum
Today I have the pleasure of speaking with professor of sociology at Middlebury College, workers’ rights activist, and the author of two books on labor, Jamie McCallum. Jamie’s latest effort titled, Worked Over: How Round-the-Clock Work is Killing the American Dream; addresses the loss of agency the average American worker has in managing their work - life balance and why labor’s next big battle may not just be about wages but about time too. We’ll start our conversation by understanding the give and take relationship labor and management have shared over the ages and how this paradigm shifted from the agrarian task-based formula to a “time is money” model with the advent of clocks. Next, we’ll investigate the 1970’s resurgence of Corporate Class Power and how it has led to the extremes in income inequality we see today and how this resurgence has led to a dynamic which enables a CEO to make over 350 times what the average worker does. Later, we’ll discuss the triple threat that is unique to US workers and how over scheduling, under scheduling and volatile work hours contribute to work instability and why the American Dream is alive in well in other nations but is falling further away from the grasp of many Americans.  And we’ll finish our conversation by discussing why Jamie believes “we should redesign our economy so that trading most of our waking hours for money, isn’t the only pathway to a dignified life,” The Show NotesJamie McCallumhttps://www.jamiekmccallum.com/Worked Overhttps://www.basicbooks.com/titles/jamie-k-mccallum/worked-over/9781541618343/Join the Grit Nation MVP Teamhttps://mailchi.mp/c28da31260b8/grit-nation-podcast-sign-up-pageFollow Grit Nation on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/gritnationpodcast/Email comments or suggestions to:joe@gritnationpodcast.comGrit Nation is a proud member of the Labor Radio / Podcast Networkhttps://www.laborradionetwork.org/ Union Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home. Prevailed Wage Law - Frank Manzo
On today’s episode I speak with Frank Manzo from the Illinois Economic Policy Institute. We will start our conversation by understanding how Frank teamed up with academics at Oregon State University to co-author his report on the effect Prevailed Wage laws have on taxpayer funded construction projects in the state of Oregon.    We will then look into some of the falsehoods that circulate around prevailed wage projects as we uncover the fact-based truths that empirical data and research can provide.Later we’ll unpack how employing skilled labor that is paid a livable wage, not only, does not raise construction cost, but can actually work to lower the cost of building projects while creating strong ties and advancement opportunities within the local community. And we will finish our conversation when Frank shares his thoughts as to how apprenticeship programs are crucial in bridging the ever-widening skills gap that is growing in our nation. This episode shines a light on many of the misconceptions about what paying skilled trades professionals a fair wage and benefits can mean. It also addresses the importance of awareness and understanding that carpenters must have when electing state officials who make career enhancing or ending decisions, such as Prevailed Wage and Right to Work laws. Use the link below to see the NBC Nightly News Story.https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/hidden-scourge-wage-theft-when-higher-profits-come-out-workers-n1272238This episode of Stolen begins in the early morning of August 2020, when a storm system develops on the barren plains of the Nebraska and South Dakota border. Known as a Derecho, Spanish for straight, these type’s of storms are powerful, fast-moving systems that can generate hurricane force winds, and create tornados, heavy rains, and flash flooding. Cedar Rapids, Iowa was one of the hardest hit areas. There the storm caused power outages, gas leaks and extensive wind and water damage to residences, buildings, and schools.Among the many businesses that suffered significant damage was a senior living community just a few miles from downtown called Cottage Grove Place.Pablo Ramirez was subcontracted by Blusky, a restoration and repair company based out of Denver, Colorado to supply the manpower to do the repairs.Pablo hired  out of state workers agreed to be paid a flat wage that depended on their experience. Additionally, Pablo promised to pay his workers weekly, reimburse their travel expenses and arrange for their lodging while working in Iowa. It sounded like a sweet deal and as the crew headed north, their spirits were high. Steady work and a place to stay. What could be better? Little did they know as they began their long drive north they were headed into a Derecho all their own. Today we investigate just what went wrong in Cedar Rapids and how the 6 Blusky employees from Texas found themselves without food, lodging or even the money to get home.To help me tell this story I spoke with Royce Peterson the carpenter’s union, lead business representative in Eastern Iowa.Joining us on the call were Public Affairs Director Richard Kajayski and Burt Johnson, General Counsel from the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters.
