Direct-to-Film or DTF Printing is the most discussed topic in garment decorating today. We have Todd Downing, a power DTF user, joining Aaron and Terry to talk about how the process works and how you might use it in your own shop. Todd will talk about what is true and what is a myth about this new DTF Printing process. Our regular listeners know this, but 2 Regular Guys are all about garment decorating, a bit of fun, and no rants or lectures or selling. We are not doing this for our employers, but rather for our industry. Questions we didn’t get to in the comments section during Part 1 of this show:Aaron: From Josh Hester - Is the powder shaking machine worth it? Anything that can save labor is worth it. The shaker dryer allows you to do other things while the machine takes care of the work. 1 issue I have seen with this is that if there is a problem with the print you might not know until it's too late.Terry: Also from Josh Hester - What is the average cost per print? A lot goes into pricing as my overhead is most likely different than yours and you just can't take all of your supplies multiple by 3 and say that's your price. The printer you are using, who are you buying your supplies from, are you getting a better deal buying in bulk, what rip software you are using, what are your ink settings, and what is your hourly overhead cost are all factors in pricing? Taking in all the factors $1-$3 is a good average per square footAaron: From Gosta -...

Being a positive part of this industry and recognizing people for their service to the industry. Not just copying and pasting someone into every category or voting for one person.Rule ”You must nominate a company or individual in at least seven of the 10 categories. Nomination forms that have less than 7 categories filled in will be tossed out and not counted.” That equated to 30 out of the 90 being tossed out.Rule - For products, must be out in the last 3 years and not made the voting before. So while we didn't throw out those nominations, there were many nominations for people who clearly are older than 3 years old. (Un-bee-leave-able) Starting a Business Aaron: Terry I’m excited about today. As you know I love working with small businesses. I have found when working with small business owners they are so mired in the details that they forget the big picture. So I have made it my mission to preach the fundamentals and the grand vision so they have a foundation that can withstand setbacks. Because of that, you might notice that I’m spending a lot of time in the success principles, finding your why, setting goals, business planning, and more. Most small businesses actually have the tools to handle the details, but their lack of foundation makes them uncertain so the tiniest details freeze them and share resources to gain confidence and take action. But with all that said if we can also give them the more nuts and bolts type tips, I believe we can also help our industry grow. So if you are an experienced business owner, we would love your feedback on what you suggest, and also you might be able to take a tip of today that maybe you missed or need to go back and revisit. If you are new, get your yellow legal pad out!But Terry, I’m going to ask you a favor. You have to keep me on target, and out of the clouds as I can already see where I will get off track. Some of these items and questions I’m already thinking about how having a marketing plan, a clear mission, and brand identity is the answer, but I know I can do this. You are in charge. Where should we start?Terry: Let's start with the nuts and bolts of answering “What kind of business do...

Welcome to the Show!Terry: Start us off by telling us about your journey into DTF printing. When did it start and what has that process been like?TODD: In the summer of 2020 I started hearing about this “new” technology where people were printing full color transfers in house with converted printers. After a few months of researching, I found a US company that I was happy with and placed an order for a printer and supplies. It took a good 3 months and over 1k in supplies to learn how each step of the process worked and feel comfortable and confident in the final product. Aaron: So when you got started, what was the thing that stands out that was way different than you expected it to be? The biggest surprise. TODD: That's a hard question as I had spent months researching everything I could about the process and printer but color matching is always fun to do as not all profiles are created equal. I did find out fairly quickly that if not in constant use you are going to have issues fast.Terry: So for anyone unfamiliar with DTF, what is the process to create a DTF transfer?TODD: The short story, you print on a film, let the ink set up, add an adhesive powder, cure, and now you have a ready-to-press transfer.I use Epson P600’s to print on a film and we cure using a manual method which if you are not using an enclosed area like a sand blasting cabinet you are going to get the adhesive powder everywhere. For curing you have a few options like heat press, oven, and even a tunnel dryer. There are 2 types of film that you are able to print on a cold peel and a hot peel. I wouldn’t say one is better than the other and this is more of a personal preference. These transfers can adhere to cottons, poly, blends, and more. We did a test a few weeks ago on Tuesday With Todd and we were able to press to wood and paper with no issues at all.

How did you get where you are today? Aaron: You’ve talked with us about the creative process, and from looking at your offerings online, we know you consistently create new designs and concepts. How would you describe your approach to the creative process? Terry: We’re all about education here at 2RG. Let’s talk about how you share with individuals and businesses how to develop their own creative process. Aaron: Education isn’t just for those of us on this side of the counter; we know you feel strongly about educating customers on how to recognize quality embroidery- what are the most important things you tell customers to look for? Terry: You shared with us that as much as you love to teach technique, you are also passionate about helping people make that move from hobby into business; What’s the biggest challenge you find new ‘sellers’ facing when they make the switch? What other decoration methods can you tell us about?Terry: Cris, there are a lot of decorators who own a cap heat press. Is there anything beyond caps that we can use this fairly uniquely designed press for?Aaron: Greg, a new decoration method entered our world nearly 20 years ago. Let’s talk about DTG printing and curing with a heat press.Terry: Cris, I think there’s some assumption in the industry that a heat press and its uses haven’t necessarily changed over the years. Talk to us about how transfer applications have evolved over the past 10 years or so.Aaron: Greg, it’s a just-in-time world today. How has customization and just-in-time manufacturing impacted the transfer world?Aaron: How can our listeners find Insta Graphic Systems and you individually? Greg, let’s start with you. Small Business and the Customer Experience
(Sponsored by PRINTING United) This week on 2 Regular Guys, Aaron and Terry will be talking with Dana Curtis from Biztool. The conversation will cover small business entrepreneurship, the experience your customer sees, feels and touches with your business, and ways to develop your own business strategy. Our regular listeners know this, but 2 Regular Guys are all about garment decorating, a bit of fun, and no rants or lectures or selling. We are not doing this for our employers, but rather for our industry. Since February 2013, The 2 Regular Guys have been the first and the most listened to garment decorating industry podcast on this planet! We are humbled by all of you tuning in each week. We work hard to bring you information that will make your business better, and our industry better. Take a look at our incredible weekly guest list and you’ll understand where this industry goes for news, interviews, and the heartbeat of garment decorating. Thanks for listening! News Dad Joke - Two snails got into a bar fight...It was a real slug fest Customer Experience Aaron:  Dana Curtis is the founder and CEO of Biztools, a strategic consulting firm that helps small businesses multiply revenue through improved customer experience and pivot to new markets. Welcome to the show Dana.Terry: Dana, let’s start with defining what customer experience means to you?Dana: My view of the customer experience is the journey a customer takes from the moment they learn your name all the way through the purchase process until they: A) forget who you are, or B) think about doing business with you again – at which point they start a new experience. It is the sum of their encounters with your business across all channels. It can be a windingly complex sales cycle over a period of months with multiple touchpoints, or it can be a quick search right before popping into your shop in person. In some cases, you may never be aware of them at all.Aaron: What’s the one most common mistake a new business owner makes when it comes to designing their customer experience?Dana: There’s a couple I can think of, but probably the most common is trying to do too much and be all things to all people. Half measures get half results, and the single hardest thing new business owners must deal with is building Brand Equity. A simple definition for brand equity is the answer to the #1 question every prospect asks: “Why You?”  It’s simple to understand, yet the most difficult question to answer. You simply can’t do everything, so by stretching yourself too thin, you either make promises you can’t keep, or you don’t earn enough revenue to sustain the business. There’s a reason the “average age of successful entrepreneurs is 45”, by that age they know how to slow down and draw lines in the sand. Terry: Let's get into the nuts and bolts of customer experience. What is the process for a garment decorator to create a better “customer experience”?Dana: I approach this problem in 3 parts – essentially the beginning, middle, and end of the journey I just mentioned.Beginning:I like to have my clients walk me through their customer journey. Most don’t have one. Their initial response is usually “I get a phone call or an email” or “somebody fills out a form on the website”. If they have a retail space, you can also add “somebody walks through my door”.  What I counsel my clients is the first time you interact with your customer in person, they are halfway through their journey. They have already formed an opinion about the business.Middle:After we have this conversation, I ask my clients “what do they think of you?” Most don’t know.Their response is usually, “how should I know?” – which is completely ok, by the way. When you look at the most successful brands, in any space, customers know exactly why they shop there.Walmart vs Target? Price vs Style. Walmart shoppers go there because Walmart is the “Low Price Leader”. You may find things at Target that are actually cheaper,

The picture in their minds when they look at your business card. Presentation is simply how we present ourselves, our companies, to the world. News Terry: We’re starting the show today with a quick chat with our friend, Jamar Laster, who is the Content Director for Impressions Magazine. Welcome back to the show, Jamar. Aaron: Trade shows are all the conversation in the industry yet again. You’ve just wrapped up the Atlantic City Impressions Expo. Give us a recap. Terry: Another show in Ft Worth is now just around the corner. Talk to us about that event coming next week. Aaron: Jamar, tell our listeners where they can go to find out about Impressions Expo and Impressions magazine. Printing United Cancellation PRINTING United Expo event, which was scheduled to take place this October 6-8 in Orlando, has been officially canceled for this year. The announcement came out this week soon after the information was leaked on the internet. They are now working toward the October 19-21, 2022 event back in Las Vegas. Terry and I were speaking at that show, plus we did have a booth space as well to do our show live daily. In an effort to help the industry as decorators struggle to find blanks to decorate fellow decorator and expert screen printer, Nathan Leber decided to look for solutions. He said, "In light of the garment shortage and my disbelief that nothing can be done, I made a live Google Sheet that has some of my shops blank inventory on it." The goal is to provide an open Google Sheet that everyone can access to possibly find an item that might not be available at the supplier's locations due to the issues they are facing with containers and cotton shortages. Nathan believes that most shops are like his, where they have a stash of excess inventory where something happened on the job or they misordered. He goes on to say "I know all of the decorators' community has this stuff around their shop and for whatever reason it is just collecting dust when someone could be using it."  He is trying to spread the word about this open Google sheet, which you can find at www.bit.ly/stocksheet1. Any decorator can go and add extra inventory they would like to move, and look for and coordinate getting blanks from others. The more people use the list to both buy and sell, the more valuable it will become for the industry as we navigate these difficult times of shortages, unbalanced stock, and shipping problems. Nathan only has two 'asks' of the decorators' community "Please try to keep the formatting clean and NO PRICE GOUGING or I will be forced to delete it from the sheet. Hopefully, we can all help each other out and find some of the garments that we know are sitting in a corner somewhere." It has changed since I came on the podcast and we just sent an email about it to our community. In short, everyone, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, are required to wear face masks in ALL state-owned buildings, which includes the Atlantic City Convention Center. Please note: these public, indoor spaces include exhibit halls, meeting rooms, and lobbies. Masks will be made available at the event, if needed. Impressions Expo in Atlantic City, NJ is August 26-28. Here’s a link to the health & safety page on our Atlantic City website: https://impressionsexpo.com/atlanticcity/show/health-and-safety/Scott Ritter with the DAX Show: We're looking forward to a great show at DAX Chicagoland, and attendance has surged in the last 2 weeks to the point where we have had to make arrangements in the floor plan to accommodate a larger than expected crowd! We're even seeing people register from New Jersey and Pennsylvania! If you are worried about traveling to large cities right now, it's good to know that the DAX show venue is located on I-80, just southwest of the Chicago metro area. For almost anybody attending, there is no need to go through Chicago to get to the very safe, friendly, and upscale suburb of Tinley Park. The convention center has installed a new air handling system making it one of the first convention facilities in the country to have a 'negative-pressure' event space, with the air in the exhibit hall being exchanged with outside air several times an hour.

Managing Customer Expectations Aaron: Do you set the expectations for your customers, or do they set the standard for quality, delivery, products? It’s time to take charge of the what, when, where, and why of your customer's expectations, and for them to feel good about it all. Terry: Aaron, here’s a pet peeve of mine: “When can I get the shirts?” With a response of, “When do you need them?” That’s not setting expectations. Aaron: I hear a lot of folks I work with having challenges with customers when it comes to getting artwork, and explaining what they need as print-ready artwork. Any ideas on how to better manage those expectations Terry: Obviously a big topic is the lack of stock of blank shirts and hats. When everyone has gotten so used to just buying more “on-demand” and the customer just expects they will get the shirt they want. How can companies deal with that? Aaron: So what happens when the expectations are clear, but something happens. There is an issue where you can no longer meet the expectations of the customer. Then what? Terry: How can printers best deliver and educate customers on the “expectations?” Facebook Live Video #5Things 5 Things to Take with You to a Trade Show Walk in with a written plan of who you want to talk with first, and check them off.

Developing Solutions for Specialty Embroidery
This week Aaron and Erich will be talking to Andrea Bommarito of ZSK to discuss her role in developing and testing processes for specialty embroidery and decorations. From determining digitizing solutions to material manipulations to machine setup, Andrea helps her customers create processes for all manners of decoration from the mundane to the magnificent, and she'll be on-hand to discuss her methods and share insights about developing treatments. Our regular listeners know this, but 2 Regular Guys are all about garment decorating, a bit of fun, and no rants or lectures or selling. Take a look at our incredible weekly guest list and you’ll understand where this industry goes for news, interviews, and the heartbeat of garment decorating. Thanks for listening! News Erich: Rather than single out a specific news story, I just wanted to say I think it’s great to see so many new hires and expansions going on in the industry; I have been seeing multiple companies bringing on people who will expand their reach, new partnerships meant to solidify product lines, and much more great news. There are other issues like price hikes and supply issues, but all in all, I feel like there’s some real movement getting underway.Dad Joke: A guy threw milk at me.How dairy? Specialty Embroidery Aaron: Let’s bring Andrea on and get right into it. Fans of the 2 Regular Guys know Andrea as our original Embroidery Expert and a great friend of the show, but for those that don’t know you as well as we do, Andrea, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do?Erich: Those of us who are trade show veterans definitely know you from the ZSK booth, and some of us know that there are a ton of awesome embroideries of yours on display,  but what some may not know is that you take an active role in helping customers develop decoration processes- When folks come to you with something out of the ordinary that they want to achieve, how do you usually get started? Though I imagine the initial interview is pretty important, what’s the first step after that in your process of crafting a solution?ConsultationAaron: About the specialty solutions themselves; do most of the people that come to you for help want to run on strange materials/garments, or are they trying to do something different with the decoration itself?Erich: Do you find that the issues that crop up with these special treatments are mostly with digitizing, or do people more frequently have problems with execution/materials? Is there a chief stumbling block most people face?Aaron: Do most people come to you with problems before they get equipment, i.e. they are looking for an equipment solution, or are the people you help mostly working with a new product or struggling with something in their existing offerings?Aaron: Though it’s great that you help people solve these creative problems, I’d love not to have this show just turn into more work for you- What tips can you offer people looking to create their own solutions and solve problems?Erich: If there’s one thing you wish customers knew about the work you do in consulting for these solutions, what would it be?Erich: Where can our audience find out more?  Facebook Live Video #5Things 5 Things To Remember when developing new embroidery techniques. Bad Info Shared Freely on the Internet
(Sponsored by PRINTING United) Ever hear someone say if you repeat something enough, people will start to believe it's true? That's what we'll be discussing on 2 Regular Guys this Friday. Bad Info about garment decorating that's repeated enough that people start to believe it. Guest host Jay Busselle will join Terry to talk about the good and the bad of internet information. Our regular listeners know this, but 2 Regular Guys are all about garment decorating, a bit of fun, and no rants or lectures or selling. McBee Supply transitioned its inventory and employees to GSG as of July 6.Mike McDonnell, president of McBee, has facilitated the acquisition and will retire once the transaction closes.McDonnell said, “I know GSG well and respect them as a good, fair, and solid competitor. This was a good opportunity to transition McBee employees as we are not only familiar with each other, our lines overlap, and know this is a positive move for my employees.”Dad Joke: Know why the Flat Earth people are wrong? If the Earth was flat our cats would have pushed ALL our stuff over the edge by now. Bad Info Terry: Ever hear someone say if you repeat something enough times, people will start to believe it’s true? It’s the same with garment/product decorating and information on the internet. Jay, what we really find on the internet is, “I couldn’t get this to work, so here’s my Bandaid.”Screen PrintingAll you need are 110 mesh screensFlash between colors for best resultsPinholes? Just put more emulsion on it!There is a perfect white ink. You just have to find it!DTGSave money, use Teflon sheetsOur machine will fix your 72dpi files and print perfectlyYou can’t make money with DTG… ink is too high and production is too slowSublimation (per Aaron)Terry: Dipping mugs after pressing. Even in lukewarm water you are creating micro cracks in the ceramic. This was an old band aid for old coating that was not as good as the current dishwasher safe coatings where the ink is not going to ghost as readily. Just remove the transfer, put the mug on a cooling rack, cooling stone, or on concrete to remove the heat from it at a natural level and you will be fine. If anyone is suggesting it, I would be leery of their mugs and the quality of coating.Jay: 400 degrees for 60 seconds - This time and temperature has been used as the correct setting for all sorts of items. It is another bandaid for poor testing and was just a catch all to make sure that the full transfer happened. Most items have a much lower time and temperature. 400 for 60 seconds will cause blacks to look brown, and haloing around the edges of prints. It can even cause the orange peel look on thin aluminum and other hard surface coated items.Embroidery (per Erich)Terry: Embroidery pricing begins and ends with $1 per thousand stitches. Every shop is unique, niches can be different, and both the value you are providing and the costs required to keep your business healthy and profitable vary widely with where you are located and who you are serving as well as the type and amount of equipment you run. Simple counts are easier for quoting, but often leave money on the table. Besides this ‘rule of thumb’ hasn’t seemed to change for decades,
