Our Editor's Take

Women physicians and their challenges are the focus of The Revitalizing Doctor podcast. There are still more male American doctors than women doctors. But that is changing. Statistics show that over half of medical students are women. Yet within a decade of their initial residency, 40 percent of female physicians either leave the profession or go part-time. This number surprised and alarmed Dr. Andrea Austin, an emergency room physician. She felt that this was a terrible loss to the medical profession. To help change things, Dr. Austin cofounded the Revitalize Women Physicians Circle. It's a support group to help women physicians. Dr. Austin's partner in the organization. Dr. Linda Lawrence is also an executive coach who worked with Dr. Austin to help her redefine her own life.

In 2022, Dr. Austin created The Revitalizing Doctor podcast. It builds upon her work helping women physicians. The podcast has a specific focus for a particular audience. It wants to help female doctors improve their lives and handle all the pressures they face. But even men, as well as those outside the medical profession, may appreciate the show. That's because some program topics are universal. That includes how to get unstuck and find one's purpose.

There are also more specific topics on The Revitalizing Doctor podcast. One talks with Dr. Kat Landa. She explains how a female physician can show both "toughness" and "compassion." Another episode discusses how women can design their medical practice. It explains how to do so around their personal beliefs. Functional medicine is also a popular topic. Dr. Lawrence is a frequent guest on the program. She helps coach female physicians on how to find fulfillment in the workplace.

Dr. Austin is a relatable podcast host and a good advocate for female physicians. New episodes of The Revitalizing Doctor podcast come out weekly.
