Honoring the Past in Present Time/ Mick & Paige Whitcomb
The Whitcomb's are both artists working on their own bodies of work in different mediums. Each captures elements of the past presented with a contemporary eye. Mick Whitcomb https://www.artifactsbynomad.com/ is fixated on the American Machine Age and the advent of electric lighting. He transforms 19th-century machines and scientific instruments into utilitarian sculptures. Paige Whitcomb https://www.paigewhitcomb.com/ creates photos using the traditional method of wet collodion photography with an authentic 19th-century studio camera. She creates tintypes to capture a staged fictional world. Her images are the opposite of modern photography; in a society where anyone can take a picture anywhere, her meticulously staged scenes allow the viewer to see the world through the artist’s perspective, which is often an allegorical view of modern culture. Visual artists Douglas Sigwarth https://www.sigwarthglass.com/ and Will Armstrong http://www.willarmstrongart.com/ co-host and discuss topics affecting working artists. No Limitations/ Marlene Rose
When Marlene Rose https://marlenerose.com/ discovered molten glass, she was energized by the adrenaline rush of the material. While pursuing her BFA, she learned that glass could be used for more than just craft, but as a means to convey an idea of what she wanted to say. Although glassblowing was more common at the time, she was drawn to an ancient technique of sand casting, typically used for metal. Sculpting molten glass in a mold of sand sent her in a direction where everything was new and exciting with no limitations. Please take the ZAPP artist survey. bit.ly/ZAPPArtistSurvey Please help out these amazing members of our community. When it comes to painting, Beth Bojarski https://bethbojarski.com/ has three rules. "Don't take yourself too seriously. Don't take your subject matter too seriously.  But paint with a seriousness." Beth compares her creative process to looking up at the clouds and seeing what imagery emerges. Her characters arise from the board as she works tirelessly to allow the humanity to show through her subjects while expressing her clever sense of humor. To watch her YouTube series, See Saw Project, follow this link https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxCgo2AN4N_nU55fIqt8QOw In today's intro, Douglas and Will discuss the challenges of being on the road for the last two weeks and when a big show doesn't work for you. Nature AND Nurture/ Jeffrey Zachmann and Carl Zachmann
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? It's difficult to say regarding this father/ son pair of kinetic sculptors. Jeffrey Zachmann http://www.zachmann.com/brought his son Carl Zachmann https://carlzachmann.com/ on the road with him throughout his career as an independent artist. It is no wonder that Carl eventually followed step with his dad after exploring his interest in engineering and archeology. What seemed like a random collection of interests coalesced around his body of work involving gears and artifacts, encouraging the viewer to go internal. Conversely, Jeffrey's work is a lively experience that allows his collectors to actively engage in the movement within his pieces which disarms them and allows their natural and unfiltered reactions to emerge. These men are extremely creative, and their stories about their experiences on the road are truly entertaining. Risk Factor/ Erica Iman
When Erica Iman http://ericaiman.com/ was a middle school art teacher fresh out of college, she recognized a trend among her coworkers. Her fellow teachers were counting down to retirement. She also identified that her favorite educators were those who led interesting lives. This prompted her to experience life and get outside her personal bubble. Erica and her husband joined the Peace Corps and spent two years of service in Mongolia. Her experiences in Asia fueled her drive to pursue her own art practice with ceramics as her medium. After years of working with clay, Erica's curiosity inspired her to explore 2D paintings that work seamlessly within her entire artistic vision. Erica's work has garnered many notable awards, and reputable shows look to her as a voice when selecting their artist exhibitors. Not Just the Biggest Party in Miami/ Camille Marchese
When  Camille Marchese was hired as the Executive Director for the Coconut Grove Arts Festival https://cgaf.com/, she posed a very important question to the Board of Directors. She asked, "Would you like this to be the biggest party in Miami or the best art festival in the country?" The decision to focus on the art became the benchmark that impacted every decision related to the planning and execution of the festival moving forward. In this conversation, Camille describes her experiences with making hard choices and the pressure to stand behind her conviction regarding issues like the jury, the number of exhibitors, and the emerging artist program.Evan Reinheimer's video from the Emerging Artist Program at Coconut Grove https://youtu.be/NGc5BBVvy_wVisual artists Douglas Sigwarth https://www.sigwarthglass.com/ and Will Armstrong http://www.willarmstrongart.com/ co-host and discuss topics affecting working artists. Honor What You’re Born With/ Julia Gilmore
May 1 2023
Honor What You’re Born With/ Julia Gilmore
As a young artist in the Montreal art scene, Julia Gilmore http://www.juliagilmore.ca/ discovered that she thrived from interacting with her audience and shifted gears. She formed an indie-punk band where she wrote and performed her original music for many years. Eventually, she discovered that her life lacked something she couldn't identify until the birth of her son. She longed for the tangible creation of her fine art, combined with the interaction of her collectors.  Armed with tubes of oil paint and a palette knife, she began to carve and create paintings that elevate the ordinary prosaic subject matter to a vibrant exuberant level of iconic imagery by using vintage objects to tell a story and make visceral connections with memory and the past. In her artistic view, she paints a world with intense beauty, even in mundane everyday objects. Her artwork re-examines the temporal world around her in a direct, straightforward joie de vivre expression of vivid color and gestural texture that reaffirms her zest and love for life.In the preamble discussion, Douglas and Will discuss the grief of not jurying into one of your best shows, the final tour for the Radtke's, and when the elusive show doesn't meet your expectations.Visual artists Douglas Sigwarth https://www.sigwarthglass.com/ and Will Armstrong http://www.willarmstrongart.com/ co-host and discuss topics affecting working artists. Outside the Box/ Joachim Knill
Joachim Knill http://www.joachimknill.com/ describes himself as a conceptual artist who, once his idea comes into focus, becomes a slave to completing his vision. The individual pieces he creates fit into his installation narrative. Where some artists make a booth to display their work for sale, Joachim builds an entire installation where the viewer, knowingly or not, steps in and becomes part of the overall experience. In the preamble discussion, Douglas and Will discuss universal thoughts, displaying prices, and getting off to the year's first show.Visual artists Douglas Sigwarth https://www.sigwarthglass.com/ and Will Armstrong http://www.willarmstrongart.com/ co-host and discuss topics affecting working artists. Magic Carpet Ride/ Trés & Helene Taylor
Trés & Helene Taylor https://www.trestaylor.com/ took a leap of faith in 2019 by relocating to Selma, Alabama, to further civil rights activism through their art. As they stood in the doorway of their home for the first time, they both cried, but for very different reasons. Helene expressed tears of joy, but for Trés, it was fear.  In this episode, the Taylors share the "signs from the universe" that have directed them along the way, even during the difficult times when facing their mortality. These signs have served as encouragement to hop on that "magic carpet ride" and not look back. In the preamble discussion, Douglas and Will discuss family distractions, exhibitor theft, reality show opportunities, and when your art is used for show publicity.Visual artists Douglas Sigwarth https://www.sigwarthglass.com/ and Will Armstrong http://www.willarmstrongart.com/ co-host and discuss topics affecting working artists.
