Our Editor's Take

Hockey is one of the most beloved and watched sports across the globe. Many hockey fans are familiar with the sports blog 32 Thoughts on Canada's Sportsnet. 32 Thoughts: The Podcast sees the popular blog expand into a podcast format. The podcast continues the thoughtful commentary that regular readers have come to know. It also sees the same creative team behind the blog working on the podcast. This helps to ensure a sense of continuity and familiarity.

The number "32" in the 32 Thoughts: The Podcast title references the 32 teams in the National Hockey League. Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek host the podcast. Hockey fans, especially Canadian ones, will likely be very familiar with Friedman. The cohost is the author of the blog that inspired this podcast. Friedman has been an on-air commentator for Sportsnet since 2014. He is also on the commentary team for Hockey Night in Canada, one of the country's most popular sports programs.

Jeff Marek has been working as a sports commentator since the late 1990s. In the early 2000s, he began hosting pregame and postgame coverage for the Toronto Maple Leafs. This would lead to him working with Hockey Night in Canada for some time. He is a hockey reporter for Sportsnet in addition to cohosting 32 Thoughts: The Podcast.

32 Thoughts: The Podcast analyzes all of the major news stories in the world of hockey. It contains the same insightful analysis that made the blog popular among hockey fans. The podcast allows Friedman and Marek to build on the stories they discuss online.

One of the ways they do this is by having special guests on the podcast. Golden Knights owner Bill Foley and Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher have been prior guests. This insider access helps to provide additional insight into major hockey stories.

New episodes of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast premiere three times a week. They are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Everybody Has Gloves off at the Garden
Pre-2018 nostalgia was on full display on Thursday as Crosby and the Penguins took on Ovechkin and the Capitals with playoff implications, and Jeff and Elliotte made sure to open this edition of 32 Thoughts talking about just that. Once the fellas took care of the newly minted "doodlebug derby" in the East, they changed their focus to the brawl on Broadway between the Rangers and Devils (12:00). That convo made way for the Martin Pospisil major penalty on Thursday night that will most likely land him another suspension (23:27). Jeff and Elliotte also discuss John Tortorella's open and honest press conference this week in Philadelphia where he laid out his method amid questions about his coaching style (25:09). The fellas then talked about the Nashville Predators who have quickly become a team no one wants to face in the Western Conference (35:00) and Jeff and Elliotte make room to discuss the latest behind the Arizona Coyotes search for a new arena (41:00). The guys then crown the Dallas Stars as the deepest team in the NHL (44:00) and round out the A block by highlighting newly minted San Jose Shark Collin Graf (50:30).The guys answer your questions in the Montana’s Thought Line (54:31). Email the podcast at 32thoughts@sportsnet.ca or call the Montana's Thought Line at 1-833-311-3232 and leave us a voicemailThis podcast was produced and mixed by Dominic Sramaty and hosted by Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.

That conversation makes way for a discussion around Auston Matthews as he notched 60 goals this season. How long will it take him to chase down the Gretzky/Ovechkin goal scoring record (13:39)? They also talk about how it can effect the Leafs' decision on players like Mitch Marner (20:31). Jeff and Elliotte also talk about the Minnesota Wild losing their extra point in OT for pulling their goaltender (32:05) and discuss Jonathan Quick breaking the wins record by an American goaltender (37:00).
