The Secret Santa gift exchange, name exchange. And thus, begins Black Friday, yes that joyous day of the year when you can feel the love and human kindness. Then you leave the house somewhere between 11pm that night and 3am on Friday morning and go stand outside in a line. For some item that you or someone on your gift list Must have."Consumers are going to spend as much as they did last season, but they are limiting the people they're spending on. They only have a certain amount of money, so they have to tighten that list of who they're buying presents for," said Howard Dvorkin, chairman of Debt.com. "Because of the increased pricing, their dollars won't go as far as they did last year.So the bottom line is don’t spend more than you can really afford—aka don’t go into debt to fund your Christmas. No matter how much you have to spend, set a budget for it.Full podcast show notes available here: https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e64 Instacart - Groceries delivered in as little as 1 hour. 18WT #063: Cracking The Code To The Truck Driver Shortage!

18WT #063: Cracking The Code To The Truck Driver Shortage!
18WT 063:  So many people see trucking as a great opportunity.  So they go and get trained either paying themselves for a trucking school, or going through a company and having them pay.  Then they get their money back through a 2 year contract typically. Then a few months after training and into their very first otr job, they find out just how difficult truck driving is. Mentally, physically, and emotionally especially if they have family at home.  Let’s be honest, kids just don’t understand the parent being gone for weeks on end.  And that is how you make the money. Then there is the point of view of the trucking company. These big companies are willing to train the new people to drive, but people wonder why they pay so low to being with.  The reason seems to be that so many new drivers’ leave after 6 months of being on their own behind the wheel and being gone from home and learning more about driving and breakdowns, hours of service, split sleeper, and find out that driving is a hard job. They go find jobs driving locally for smaller companies and places like Amazon and UPS.  Then that typically leaves the big company out in the cold with a driver they paid to train, that left the company.  And yes they no doubt send a bill for the schooling.  I bet that is difficult to collect. On the other side you have a few really great companies that pay extremely well and have great benefits.  However, you do not walk into those jobs straight out of school.  You have to do your “time” as they say and pay your dues until you have enough experience to get into those companies. So, after speaking to drivers we have found that not much has changed with truck driving in one aspect, but really if you think about it, so much really has changed. Since trucks started hauling goods.Full podcast show notes available here: https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e63 Instacart - Groceries delivered in as little as 1 hour. 18WT #053: Horse Racing, Doping, and Death, How Did He Die?

18WT #053: Horse Racing, Doping, and Death, How Did He Die?
18WT 053:  HORSE RACING - Medina Spirit Stripped of 2021 Kentucky Derby Win.  Medina Spirit is no longer the winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby. The colt, who died unexpectedly in December, was officially disqualified by Kentucky racing officials on Monday for failing a drug test after winning the race.  Medina Spirit is only the third horse in the race’s 147-year history to receive such a penalty after finishing first. The decision means the colt’s owner will not collect the $1.8 million first-place check, which was never paid out and will now go to Mandaloun’s owner. Churchill Downs, the track in Louisville, Ky., that hosts the Derby, said in a statement that it now recognizes Mandaloun as the winner of the 2021 race. The ruling also erased the Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert’s seventh Kentucky Derby victory, which had been a record. In addition, Baffert was suspended for 90 days beginning March 8 and fined $7,500. The drug found in Medina Spirit’s system was betamethasone, a corticosteroid injected into joints to reduce pain and swelling. Baffert said the drug was applied topically to treat a skin rash on Medina Spirit’s hind end.The disqualification puts a new stain on a sport that has been troubled by doping problems and places Baffert’s reputation and future in the sport in jeopardy. Baffert, whose horses won the Triple Crown in 2015 and 2018, is thoroughbred horse racing’s most recognizable personality. The decision by Kentucky racing officials comes at a time when the Triple Crown season is heating up and the quest for qualifying points to earn a spot in the Derby’s starting gate is getting urgent. Churchill Downs had already suspended Baffert from the race for two years and refused to award qualifying points to horses he would train for the 2022 Derby.Baffert has three accomplished 3-year-old colts in his barn — two of them, Corniche and Newgrange, are undefeated. If their owners want to participate in the Derby, they must transfer their horses to another trainer and hope to earn qualifying points in future prep races.Last month, Baffert threatened to sue Churchill Downs if the track did not lift the two-year ban, saying that his right to due process was violated and that he had been unlawfully excluded from Churchill Downs and the Derby.Bill Carstanjen, the chief executive of Churchill Downs, said the complaint was “meritless.” He threatened to countersue if it was filed and emphasized that Baffert was a repeat offender. In all, Baffert’s horses have failed 30 drug tests over four decades, including five in a recent 13-month period. The necropsy results for Medina Spirit, who died in December indicated that the colt most likely died of a heart attack.  The disqualification, along with recent guilty pleas and convictions of prominent trainers and veterinarians for.... Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e53C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. 18WT #051: Slang In America from our LIVE Stream 3-21-2022
18WT 051:  On this episode we talk about Spring, after all it was the first day of Spring.  We also talked about Slang in America. You know those words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people.SLANG IN AMERICA20% of Americans admit to using slang in every conversation.  50% of Americans use slang terms without knowing what they mean.  The most well-known slang words and phrases in America are “ghosted,” “salty,” and “on point.”  58% of Americans don’t know what the ‘Rona’ means.  66% of parents are annoyed by slang, compared to 46% of people without children.  46% of Americans think it’s appropriate to use slang in a professional setting and 42% would use it in front of their boss. How do you refer to those people, things, and experiences that are amazing or awesome? Are they cool? Perhaps they’re rad? In the 1980s, you might have called them bad. Today, for example, you might refer to your perfect curls as on fleek.  What do all these interesting words have in common? They’re all slang words. If you’re a kid, we’ll bet you use plenty of slang words. But guess what? Adults use them, too. What are slang words? Some experts define them as “deliberate alternative vocabulary that sends social signals.” Merriam-Webster says slang is “very informal nonstandard vocabulary.” Slang words say something about the attitudes of the people, groups, and subcultures that use them.  The word “slang” began as a word in northern England that was used to refer to territory or turf. Over time, it came to refer to the people who would advertise and sell goods in certain locations. Eventually, slang became the term used to describe the colorful, informal speech these salespeople used. You may have noticed that new slang words tend to pop up quite often. They can appear as new meanings for existing words, brand new words, or abbreviations for words  If you’ve ever said yolo, fleek, bae, selfie, juju, woke, or dank meme, you’ve used slang!  So where do all these new slang words come from? Language grows and changes over time. New words and new meanings for old words come about all the time.  Over the past couple of decades, many slang words have come from three specific sources. These are popular music, politics, and the Internet. Popular music, especially rap and hip hop, has led to many slang words. Politics has also given rise to numerous slang words. In large part, this is due to how divided people seem to be over major issues. For better or worse, words such as snowflake, woke, and triggered have taken on new meanings. Often, this is thanks to constant bickering before, during, and after election cycles.Perhaps the biggest source of slang words, however, is the Internet....Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e51C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. 18WT #050: Food For Thought from our LIVE stream 3-14-2022
18WT 050:  On this episode we decided to revisit our food for thought topic from the week  before when we had a ghost in the machine. Janet asked what is your favorite food to eat both at home or at a restaurant. We also talked about some facts that Janet found online. These facts were taken from www.flavorproducers.com  A Better Us We all strive for self improvement, so let’s start with what sustains us. From organic offerings to clean and clear labels, sustainable packaging and beyond, the food industry is adapting to consumer demand for more personalized and sustainable options.Borderless Taste  Taste has gotten bigger as the world has gotten smaller. Thanks to improvements in global communication along with consumers access to exotic ingredients, cooking techniques and recipes the flavors of the world are more available than ever. A Growing Palate   Basic taste has grown up. Flavor profiles that were once avoided or thought too niche for large brands have surprised the market and found commercial success. Taste profiles like bitter, sour and umami, that were once an afterthought, are now active discussions in new product development.Toying With Emotions  The integration of online culture and social media has changed the way consumers are interacting with food. Food and drinks that appeal beyond taste and onto an emotional, visual or creative level are flooding social media and in return expanding into foodservice and then landing in retail spaces. A Little Off-Base   As functionality continues to change the food and beverage landscape, it has carved an expanding path of consumer flavor interaction and acceptance. The rise of “alternative” products has evolved flavor masking into flavor mimicking finding flavor optimization to fill in the gaps of new products. Searching for the new normal as a second year of COVID-19 passes with new challenges such as variants, supply chain issues and social dissidence have consumers more focused into what is affecting their personal mental and physical wellbeing. The chant for greater transparency around all facets of life including; politics, financial markets, relationships, social media and food seems to be getting louder and louder by the hour. Indulgences that were once comforting are now being revaluated, as consumers are establishing healthier boundaries in vices while still finding a flavorful escape. Hampered by supply chain issues, restaurateurs are rethinking menus, to eliminate potential bottlenecks while streamlining innovation. • Increased Transparency • Healthy Relationships with Food • Mindful Alcohol & Alternatives • Personalized Wellness • Fresh, Organic & Limited Menus Key Drivers: Transparency, Fresh, Mindful & Well80%....Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e50 C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. And how the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, came to be president. From his beginning in stand-up comedy to playing the president on television. Then running his campaign to becoming the President of the Ukraine in three to four months almost entirely on line.Entertainment careerAt age 17, he joined the local KVN[26] (a comedy competition) team and was soon invited to join the united Ukrainian team "Zaporizhia-Kryvyi Rih-Transit" which performed in the KVN's Major League and eventually won in 1997.  That same year, he created and headed the Kvartal 95 team which later transformed into the comedy outfit Kvartal 95. 18WT #046: The NFL, Hoops, Daytona and More! from our LIVE Stream 2-21-2022
18WT 046:  On this episode we talked about the NFL, Hoops, Daytona and More. NFL -  Antonio Brown vs the Tampa Bay Bucs … 2 months since the Jets game where Brown took his shirt off while leaving the field and the receiver still seems as mad as ever about being dumped.  Brown took to social media on Monday to lodge another complaint against his former team. This time around, not only did the receiver throw the organization under the bus, but he also pinned some blame on Tom Brady for not throwing him the ball in Tampa Bay's infamous game against the Jets. Here's what Brown posted to Instagram on Monday (via the Tampa Bay Times):   He blamed the Buccaneers for his injury: "They tried to hurt me intentionally. Sent me out there after knowing I was still hurt."  He says that Brady lied to him: "Tom said he would throw it if I came to play hurt, I came. He didn't throw it, imagine being hurt, having to play through this and being lied (to) too."  He continues to insist that Bruce Arians made him play hurt: "Coach said if I couldn't run on this, get the f--k out of there."  “Fuck all you M-F” “still caint (sic) stop me @nfl”  the Buccaneers coach has denied that version of events.   BTW…He walked off because he was told, come play and you will get the ball.  And he hadn’t.  Question answered. The Senior Bowl is behind us, the Super Bowl is in the books and the combine is a week away. Free agency is also on the horizon and then, finally, the NFL draft will be here in just over two months. Which means that as we begin to settle into how the first 32 picks might shake out, there is still a ton of uncertainty.  The biggest talk right now is QB’s or rather the lack of them.  None are picked to go in the first 10. NBA -  All- Star game, Stephen Curry hits 16 3s to win All-Star Game MVP; LeBron James nails game winner.  Noticeably missing from the starting lineup was any player from the league’s best team the Phoenix Suns.  Curry, who set the NBA's all-time record for 3-pointers made earlier this season, hit an absurd 16 3-pointers -- which would be the most in any game in NBA history, and smashed the prior All-Star Game record of nine.  The first three quarters of the game are played individually for charities. The last quarter was played to a target score of 24 over the final of the first three, to honor the late Kobe Bryant Chris Paul of the Suns did play for a few minutes in the first quarter with a fractured thumb.  However he is now out for about six weeks for recovery.  Michael Jordan arrived late in the game but in time for the ceremony of the 75 greatest of all time (he is one of them).  He was in Daytona Beach where he had two cars in the Dayton 500.Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e46C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. 18WT #045: Valentine's Day from our LIVE Stream 2-14-2022
18WT 045:  Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint ValentineOriginated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine…The Feast of Saint Valentine was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 to be celebrated on February 14 in honor of Saint Valentine of Rome, who died on that date in AD 269.The day became associated with romantic love in the 14th & 15th centuriesSaint Valentine of Rome was put in prison for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire in the third century. According to an early legend, Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer.Additions to the legend have better related it to the theme of love: an 18th-century embellishment to the legend claims he wrote the jailer's daughter a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell before his execution. Another addition supposes that Saint Valentine performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry. In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, & sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, & the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. In Italy, Saint Valentine's Keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol & an invitation to unlock the giver's heart", as well as to children to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine's Malady)....Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e45C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks.
