Parents of gifted children often say their child’s extraordinary intellect is “not a gift.” That may sound strange because high IQ is generally presumed to confer only advantages. In reality, giftedness brings significant challenges - for the children themselves and for adults trying to understand them. Gifted children experience the world in a very intense way. Their strong emotions and unusual behaviors can perplex adults and lead to misdiagnosis.
