How Not to Raise a Serial Killer

Cloud10 and iHeartPodcasts

Ever wonder if your kids have it in them to be a killer? It's okay, we've all had the thought once or twice. And if you're willing to admit that, you'll love How Not to Raise a Serial Killer. On this podcast, criminal psychologist Dr. Michelle Ward digs into the childhoods of some of the most notorious criminals and killers in order to learn from them and prevent future tragedies. Dr. Ward will use her expertise to determine what went wrong with each killer (a brain injury, an undiagnosed illness, a specific trauma) with the help of a fellow mom/non-expert who can weigh in about their own taboo parenting fears. Because on our better days as parents, we want to know how to raise good humans. But on our worst days, we at least want to know that we're not raising a future serial killer. read less

The Murderous Alter of Deryl Madison

The Murderous Alter of Deryl Madison
On this episode, Michelle and her good friend Jessica discuss the unique case of Deryl Madison and his murderous alter. Madison was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) by Dr. Wendall Dickerson after clearly being unable to recall many of his actions related to a homicide and revealing a murderous alter named Bubba. While this seems awfully convenient for a killer to forget his crimes, many of Madison's statements point to his eventual diagnosis, including a quote from his most recent TV appearance, “I feel there was someone else inside of me, besides me." Tune in this week to learn Michelle's personal take on this case, the tragic causes of DID, how to spot DID in children, and resources for parents with children affected by this disorder. In this episode, Michelle reiterates that there are harmful stereotypes that people who suffer from mental illness are frequently violent criminals, and this is completely untrue. The vast majority of people with mental illness are not violent criminals, and the relationship between mental illness and violent crime is elusive. Postpartum Psychosis with Kiva Founder Jessica Jackley
This episode discusses several cases of infanticide. Listener discretion is advised. On this special episode of HNTRASK, Michelle circles back to one of the most important themes of this podcast, how can we bolster prenatal and postpartum support on an individual and societal level, so that in turn, parents can better support their children? Dr. Ward and her esteemed guest Jessica Jackley discuss the overlooked and underdiagnosed mental illness of postpartum psychopathy. Three months after giving birth, in the wake of troubling psychological symptoms, Erin Merdy drowned her three children on Coney Island. When we read stories like this, we often wonder, How could a mother do this to her children? It is unfathomable. After hearing the story of Erin Merdy, Michelle, PhD in Psychology and Clinical Neurology expert, was prompted to discuss the underpinnings of murders like this, and bring to light an underrecognized mental disorder that was once erased from DSM. If you or someone you know needs postpartum support - Michelle recommends the organizations below. Both are LGBTQ affirmative organizations.
