19: The Crime of the Century: HBO's Opioid Documentary: Part 2 | The Addiction Help Podcast
The Hidden Opioid Crisis: A Dive into Big Pharma's Dark SecretsThe addiction epidemic is hardly a secret, but the behind-the-scenes orchestrations might surprise even the most informed of us. In Episode 19 of "The Addiction Help Podcast" we delve deeper into the shocking role played by big pharmaceutical companies and the devastating impacts of their choices, as we discuss part 2 of HBO's documentary The Crime of the Century. We revisit the story of the “guinea pig” guy, a man pursued by Purdue to be the poster child for high-dosage OxyContin usage. Their aim? To advertise that continually increasing the dosage led to no adverse reactions. This wasn’t for the patient's benefit, rather, it was a strategic move knowing his unusual tolerance. Some alarming statistics to consider: Drug overdose deaths tripled since 1990.Every day, 40 people lose their lives to prescription painkiller overdoses.By 2012, there were over 250 million opioid prescriptions. Behind these statistics, companies like Purdue have masterfully created a prescription opioid market. This lucrative enterprise was soon flooded with other companies creating generic versions of opioids, marking the rise of a new drug cartel, not smuggled from foreign lands, but birthed in corporate boardrooms. We further delve into Joe Rannazzisi's insights from his time at the DEA's diversion control division. The emerging trend of online pharmacies and the DEA's crackdown, Operation Pill Nation, serves as chilling reminders of the lengths addicts will go to and the system's struggle to keep pace. Yet, the story darkens. As prescriptions became harder to obtain, many turned to cheaper and more accessible alternatives: heroin and fentanyl. By 2019, over 10 million Americans had misused opioids, with at least 1.6 million addicted. Join Dan and Jess as they provide insights, discuss their thoughts, and question the role of big pharma and government in this crisis. Is the opioid addiction from OxyContin as rare as the Sacklers claim? Dive in with us to find out. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/addiction-help/message

18: Facing the Epidemic: HBO's Documentary on Opioids and Its Impact
A Dive into HBO's 'The Crime of the Century'" Introduction: Welcome back to another eye-opening episode of The Addiction Help Podcast. In this episode, we dissect HBO's documentary 'The Crime of the Century,' which starkly unravels the shocking truths behind the opioid epidemic in America. The documentary lays bare the manipulative tactics, misinformation, and devastating consequences that led to one of history's most profound public health crises. Join us as we recap and review this impactful documentary, shed light on the opioid epidemic's historical roots, and discuss its multifaceted impacts on individuals and society as a whole. HBO's 'The Crime of the Century': A Hard-Hitting Recap: HBO's documentary wastes no time in driving home the gravity of the opioid epidemic. From the outset, the documentary presents an alarming scene of someone succumbing to an overdose, setting the stage for the grim reality. Startling statistics echo through the narrative: over 500,000 Americans have lost their lives to opioid overdoses since 2000, and every 25 minutes, a newborn enters the world grappling with opioid withdrawal. The financial toll of opioid abuse is equally staggering, with government estimates exceeding a staggering $1 trillion. The Sacklers and the Opioid Epidemic's Origins: The origins of the opioid epidemic are as harrowing as they are extensive. The Sackler family's involvement in the pharmaceutical industry dates back to their pursuit of curing mental illnesses through chemical means. The acquisition of a pharmaceutical company, later known as Perdue Pharma, marked a turning point. The Sacklers, aided by manipulative marketing and dubious practices, introduced OxyContin as a supposedly less dangerous opioid. The documentary lays bare the extent to which these claims were concealed and manipulated, perpetuating a cycle of addiction. Dark Truths: Opioids, Deception, and the Role of Authorities: The documentary delves into the entangled web of deceit and influence that characterized the opioid epidemic. Arthur Sackler's aggressive marketing tactics, the manufacturing of opioids in unlikely places, and collaborations with FDA insiders to expedite drug approvals are just a few examples of the extent to which profit eclipsed public health. The revelations about the role of influential parties in perpetuating this crisis are both shocking and deeply troubling. Dan & Jess' Reflections and Closing Thoughts: Our discussion dives into the broader implications of the opioid epidemic. We emphasize that the overdose crisis reverberates far beyond the individual who succumbs to addiction, affecting communities, first responders, and society as a whole. A concept like 'pseudoaddiction' highlights the complexity of addiction and the pain relief sought by individuals who may not have been initially addicted. The collusion between medical professionals and pharmaceutical companies to promote opioids reveals the gravity of the crisis. As we wrap up, we reflect on Dr. Lynn Webster's insights and the urgency of addressing this issue head-on. Join us in this episode as we peel back the layers of 'The Crime of the Century' and examine the opioid epidemic's far-reaching impact. Let's continue raising awareness, fostering understanding, and working together towards a solution. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/addiction-help/message

16: Relapse Reboot: Recover From Relapse & Get Back On Track
Welcome back to Episode 16 of The Addiction Help Podcast with Dan & Jess. In this episode, we're delving into the complex topic of relapse—something that affects many individuals on their journey of addiction recovery. We'll explore what relapse truly means, common FAQs surrounding it, warning signs to look out for, and why it's essential not to view relapse as a failure. Join us as we shed light on this crucial aspect of addiction recovery and provide guidance on what to do if relapse occurs. Understanding Relapse: Relapse is a return to previous substance abuse after a period of sobriety, and it's crucial to differentiate it from brief lapses in judgment. Addiction specialists define relapse as a complete return to substance use. However, it's essential to understand that relapse does not equate to failure in the recovery process. Instead, it should be viewed as an opportunity for growth and learning. Common FAQs on Relapse: One common question that arises is whether relapse signifies that the treatment has failed. The answer is a resounding NO. Relapse is a natural part of the recovery process for many individuals, and it should not be a reason to give up on seeking help and support. Understanding relapse rates can be helpful; around 40-60% of individuals with substance use disorders experience relapse, but 60% remain sober after 2 years, and the chances of relapse after 5 years decrease to 15%. Warning Signs and Triggers: Awareness of warning signs indicating an individual is at risk of relapse is essential. These signs include romanticizing or minimizing prior substance use, behavioral shifts like isolation or skipping meetings, and questioning the recovery process. Identifying these signs early on can help prevent relapse or address it promptly. The Danger of Relapse: Relapse is dangerous for multiple reasons, with the increased potential for overdose being one of them. Individuals should seek help immediately if they experience a relapse. Attending meetings, checking boundaries, practicing self-care, and reflecting on the experience are essential steps to take after a relapse. Stages of Relapse: Relapse often follows a pattern with three distinct stages: emotional, mental, and physical. Understanding these stages can help individuals recognize and address potential triggers before they escalate. In this episode, we've touched on the fundamental aspects of relapse, including its definition, common FAQs, warning signs, and the importance of not viewing it as a failure. By shedding light on this topic, we hope to provide our listeners with valuable insights to navigate the challenges of addiction recovery. Relapse can be a learning experience; seeking help and support are crucial steps in the journey to lasting sobriety. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/addiction-help/message

14: A Path to Healing: Supporting Loved Ones Through Addiction

14: A Path to Healing: Supporting Loved Ones Through Addiction
Welcome back to another episode of The Addiction Help Podcast with Dan & Jess! In today's episode, we delve into the challenging topic of addiction and explore ways to support our loved ones who are struggling with this chronic disease. It's important to note that this episode is not only for those seeking ways to help their loved ones but also for individuals who need to prioritize their own well-being. So, let's jump right in and discuss effective strategies to assist both your loved one and yourself on this difficult journey. Topic I: How to Help Your Loved One Understanding Addiction: Before diving into the strategies, it's crucial to have a clear understanding of addiction. Addiction is a chronic disease that, while not curable, is treatable. It's not limited to drugs and alcohol but can manifest through various behaviors as well. The brain craves the dopamine released during addictive activities, leading to a continuous desire for more. As loved ones, it's essential to comprehend the nature of addiction to provide effective support. Staging an Intervention: One approach to helping your loved one is staging an intervention. Careful planning is key to ensuring the intervention's success. Consider hiring a professional interventionist who can guide you through the process. Having a backup plan is crucial if the intervention doesn't go as expected. Performing a dry run beforehand and selecting participants wisely are essential steps. Providing factual information about the side effects and dangers of specific drug use can also be helpful. Resources: To further educate yourself about addiction and find additional resources, we recommend visiting SAMHSA's website (samhsa.gov/families). They provide valuable information and support to families dealing with addiction-related issues. Topic II: How to Help Yourself Often, the relationship with the addict becomes strained or even severed due to their rejection of help or denial of the problem. In such cases, it's essential to prioritize your own well-being. Here are some strategies to consider: Join Support Groups: Specific support groups are designed for loved ones, such as Al-Anon, Alateen, and SMART Recovery for family and friends. These groups provide a safe space to share experiences, gain valuable insights, and receive support from individuals facing similar challenges. Therapy for Self-Healing: Attending therapy can be incredibly beneficial for working through the complex emotions and trauma associated with having a loved one struggling with addiction. Taking care of your mental health and seeking professional help when needed is essential. Setting Healthy Boundaries: Establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries is crucial when dealing with addiction. Understand that you are not responsible for the addict's actions or choices. Avoid enabling behaviors by not making excuses, bailing them out of legal or financial trouble, or allowing substances in your home. Remember, it's their responsibility to seek help and make changes. Self-Care: Lastly, prioritize self-care. It's essential to take care of your own needs and not let them slip through the cracks. Get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, engage in activities you enjoy, and seek support from your own network of friends and loved ones. Conclusion: Supporting a loved one through addiction can be an arduous journey. Still, you can navigate this challenging path with strength and resilience by equipping yourself with knowledge, joining support groups, seeking therapy, setting boundaries, and practicing self-care. Remember, taking care of yourself while extending support to your loved one is crucial. We hope this episode has provided you with valuable insights and tools to assist you on this healing journey. We explore how it grew into a non-profit funded through participants' donations and how it has created a global community of support. We delve into the mechanics of how AA works. Have you ever wondered what differentiates open meetings from closed ones? Or what exactly the '12 steps' in the Big Book are? We address all these questions and more, busting some commonly portrayed TV and movie stereotypes about AA along the way. Whether you're considering joining a local AA group or attending a virtual meeting, we provide an honest portrayal of what you can expect from an AA meeting.
