326: Running After 40
Imagine being able to run faster and more efficiently as you age, defying the common belief that growing older means deteriorating physical abilities. This episode is dedicated to challenging those misconceptions and revealing how age, far from being a barrier, can enhance your running journey. We delve into the science behind aging and running, discussing how hormonal changes can influence running performance and why the narrative around aging and decline needs to be rewritten. From runners in their 80s, 90s, and 100s showcasing impressive physical capabilities to the resurgence of women’s running post menopause, we offer a fresh perspective on age and performance. As we age, our bodies, minds, and lifestyles evolve - and so should our approach to running. Rather than pushing harder and doing more to clock faster times, we advocate for a shift in mindset and training routines. We offer advice on how to adapt your training program in line with your age, stressing the importance of the stress-rest cycle in achieving optimal running performance. We also explore how our motivations for running might transform as we enter our 40s, and emphasize that this evolution is not just acceptable, but an exciting part of the journey. But it’s not just about the running. We also tackle the crucial role of nutrition in supporting your performance, offering insights on how to adapt your dietary habits as your body changes with age. We tout the benefits of an effort-based training approach, enabling you to find your ideal running pace without being a slave to the watch. Moreover, we present the value of a run-walk program as a sustainable long-term strategy, demonstrating that it’s possible to maintain, if not improve, your pace while prolonging your running career. By the end of this episode, we promise you a redefined view on what it means to be a runner over 40! 324: Can I Run When I'm Sick?
Can I run when I’m sick? It’s a question that all of us will ask ourselves at one point or another. Today, we are going to take a look at this question to help you figure out when it’s best for you to run or rest when you’re feeling sick.  There are two big mistakes that runners make: many often push through instead of resting, thinking they’ll lose fitness, or on the other hand, they cancel their run at the first sniffle.  Both of these can lead to not seeing the progress they want, or worse, prolonged illness forcing you to take longer to come back.  Highlights of the episodeShould I run when sick?Learning to take a break as a runnerShould a complete break occur, or is adjusting even an option? How can you adjust if you’re sick? 323: Chasing Goals
Why do you want to chase that goal? We often think that we need a deep reason, and while that can be helpful, sometimes it’s just fun to see what we are capable of. Many runners notice that they are feeling unsatisfied with their running for some reason, and it could be because they are setting goals that are too small.  We as runners like to be challenged, so if we are setting small goals that we know we can accomplish, it makes sense that we could be feeling some of that disconnect.  So what should we do?  If we set goals that are too big, we might not accomplish them, but if we set goals that are too small, we might end up feeling empty or unsatisfied.  Let’s dive in to today’s episode and talk this one out.  Highlights of the Episode: - Why goals are important- 2 ways to look at setting goals:     - Because you can    - To see if you can - The excitement of chasing a goal you might not achieve - Why we would chase goals that aren’t guaranteed Thanks for Listening!!Be sure to hit FOLLOW on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast player Leave a review on Apple Podcasts. 316: What If I Never PR Again?
At some point in every runner’s life, they are going to reach a point where the question comes up:  what if I cannot PR again?  Is that as fast as I will ever go?  How we handle this question is related to how we have connected with running times throughout our running journey.   The physical nature of running means that eventually the clock will win and you will slow down.  This could create frustration, sadness, confusion, anger.   That's why connecting your running identity to a list of distances and corresponding times is a recipe for eventual disaster.    Every runner will find a time when the shiny new PR becomes out of reach, but that does not need to end a running journey.  It does not need to extinguish our competitive spirit.  It does not need to take the excitement out of running races or the training that goes into a race.   Let's talk about it today! What are your thoughts?? Come over to Instagram @realliferunners and let us know! Thanks for Listening!! Interested in our coaching program? Check out our coaching options here.Grab your free copy of the Running Snapshot by clicking here. Come find us on Instagram and say hi!Leave a review on iTunes. How often have you put out a goal and suggested, I’ll give it a shot or I’ll try my best?  These phrases sound like we are inspired and motivated but at the same time they also have an excuse built right into them.  I tried and it didn’t work out.  This phrase is double sided and can help or hurt our training depending on how we use it. 309: Running FOMO
As runners, we are naturally driven individuals.  We like to challenge ourselves to see what we are capable of - a faster time, a longer distance, a new achievement.   We don’t want to feel left behind or like we are missing out on the next race or the newest trend. While this might be a good thing sometimes, running FOMO does have a dark side.  If you are constantly looking ahead to what’s next, you might be missing out on what’s here now. Like Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves pretty fast.  If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” Check out this week’s episode where we talk about the places where running FOMO often exists and how to make sure that running FOMO doesn’t hurt your running progress. 308: Don't Fix Your Running Form
Guess what - your running form is not as important as you might think it is.  SAY WHAT?!?  While it’s true that there are plenty of experts out there telling you about the importance of running form, there are some things that they might be leaving out, things that we believe are much more important than spending time trying to “correct” your form during your runs. So many runners think that their running form is the problem, the reason that they aren’t faster or are getting injured.  Running form might play a role, but it’s likely not as important as they might think.  Instead, using your time and effort to improve other areas will likely give you bigger payoffs and might even “correct” your form in the process.  Check out this week's episode and don't forget to share it with a friend that might find it helpful! 307: Invest Wisely in Your Running
Invest Wisely in Your Running If you want to improve in any area of your life, you must invest in yourself.  Investments come in two main forms: time and money.  So many runners get into running thinking that running should be easy and free, and this leads to a lot of disappointment when they don’t see the results that they want.  The truth is, anything worthwhile requires an investment from you.  Some investments are optional and some are mandatory, and most are somewhere in between, depending on you, your lifestyle, and your goals.  On this week’s podcast, we talk about investing your time and money into your training, areas where you might be able to trade one for the other (spend money to save time or spend time to save money), and how you can figure out what’s right for you.   Check it out and don’t forget to share it with your friends!
