Ryan Whited: Pain and Performance
In this episode, we chat with Ryan Whited, a trainer who developed a unique approach to pain management called 'Training is Treatment.' Whited shares his experiences, which include grappling with injuries stemming from his various physical activities such as Karate, football, and climbing. As an expansion of his coaching, Whited has co-authored a book named 'Pain and Performance' with Matt Fitzgerald. Leveraging a biographical approach, it reveals Whited’s journey from athlete to coach, helping others manage pain through a simplified, non-medicalized, and empowering method. The goal is to foster independence in the athletes and steer them away from the prevailing notion that pain equals damage.00:00 Introduction and Meeting Ryan Whited00:32 The Failed First Attempt at Podcasting01:27 How Matt and Ryan Met02:50 The Idea of Writing a Book Together03:55 The Role of Pain in Performance06:56 The Importance of Understanding Pain09:21 The Role of Emotion in Pain Management13:13 The Impact of Pain on Athletes17:33 The Story of a Patient's Pain Journey19:47 The Importance of Contextualizing Pain21:16 The Role of Coaching in Pain Management22:10 The Misconceptions about Pain and Injury24:51 The Impact of the Book 'Pain and Performance'27:19 The Titanic Analogy and the Need for Change27:35 Introducing the Book: Pain and Performance28:28 Challenging the Current Medical Paradigm30:34 The Role of a Coach vs. a Clinician33:38 The Importance of Empowering Athletes34:01 The Misconceptions about Pain and Injury35:03 The Dance Metaphor: Understanding Pain35:29 Real-life Examples of the Methodology in Action39:23 The Impact of the Book on Coaches42:40 The Complexity of Pain and the Neuroscience Behind It46:03 The Unusual Life Stories of the AuthorConnect with Ryan:Instagram: @training_as_treatmentCheck Out Ryan's Gym: Paragon AthleticsConnect With Us:Hanna @hannadoesfitness, Hanna's JamsMatt @fitzgerald.matt, Matt's Jams80/20 EnduranceSign up for the 80/20 Endurance Newsletter here

Emma-Kate Lidbury: A Triathlon Fairytale
For those of us who love the sport of triathlon, Emma-Kate Lidbury has lived a fairytale life. Like many of us, Emma-Kate discovered triathlon as an adult, doing her first race on a lark with no expectations. Unlike most of us, however, she not only fell in love with the sport but also discovered that she was extraordinarily good at it—so good that she went on to turn pro and win six Ironman 70.3 events and crack the top ten in 70.3 Worlds on two occasions. But the fairytale doesn’t end there. Upon retiring from the sport, Emma-Kate took a job as the managing editor of Triathlete Magazine, where she gets to think, talk, and write about the sport we love every day. In this week’s podcast, Emma-Kate shares highlights from her fairytale life as well as lessons she learned along the way that can help others live out their fantasies in the sport.  Be sure to subscribe, so you’re notified when new episodes drop every Thursday.Connect With Emma-Kate:InstagramTwitterRead Her WritingConnect With Us:Hanna  @hannadoesfitness, Hanna's JamsMatt @fitzgerald.matt, Matt's Jams@8020enduranceSign up for the 80/20 Endurance Newsletter hereOffers:The Endurance Event | Our online event designed to share the latest ideas and best practices in endurance training and technology, brought to you by the biggest names in endurance sportsInsideTracker | Get 25% off the entire InsideTracker store at insidetracker.com/eightytwentyEndeavorun Training Camps | use code 8020PODCAST for $150 off Austin, TX  Training CampConnect With Us:Hanna @hannadoesfitness, Hanna's JamsMatt @fitzgerald.matt, Matt's Jams80/20 EnduranceSign up for the 80/20 Endurance Newsletter here
