Our Editor's Take

The Procrastination Podcast is only a little bit about procrastination. It is more of a program for people who want to speak English like a native. The host of the podcast is Emma Walker. She's funny and engaging and a native English speaker. But she also has many years of professional experience. The host also has several degrees in teaching and linguistics. So she knows what English learners want in a podcast about English. That's especially if those learners have busy lives and focus less on grammar. The "procrastination" in the title references not having time to study English like a student would.

Instead, the host designed The Procrastination Podcast so the listener feels they're meeting with a chatty friend at a bar. Each episode starts with some banter and talks about what Emma's been up to that week. In one episode, Emma suspects that her dog is crafting wooden shanks out of pieces of wood. She then spends time explaining what a shank is.

Emma is proud of the fact that she doesn't script The Procrastination Podcast. The program is for intermediate to advanced listeners of English. So it's important for them to hear English as a native speaker would use it. That includes quirks and fillers such as "like" and "you know," some swearing, and no grammar lessons. Emma pauses to explain some terms she uses but otherwise speaks as she would to anyone.

Emma being a teacher, the topics that she chooses tend to be about teaching and learning. Plus, she has plenty of advice for students who have plateaued. This includes an easy step-by-step guide to improve one's English. She also warns against the common pitfalls of learning a language. Then she shares her own experience with learning Arabic and Japanese. Emma has tips for choosing an English teacher to suit specific needs, too. This is what makes The Procrastination Podcast a great choice. It is good for people who want to become more confident English speakers. Since there are no grammar lessons, it's possible to listen to the episodes in any order.
