47. My advice? Do diabetes your way!
In this episode, I speak to Paul aka the Diabetic Dad. Paul has been living with type 1 diabetes for over 37 years and of course, that means he’s seen many changes in diabetes care over the years. We start our chat from Paul’s diagnosis (which is the teaser you might have heard) and then we move into life. A keyword for this episode is ‘life stages’. A key point in Paul’s life, diabetes was there and mostly to take stock of everything and then make a change. From hypos at school and on the way to work, to retinopathy operations to him becoming a leading voice in #gbdoc on Twitter, we talk about it all. Useful links:Paul on TwitterPaul on InstagramPaul's blogDaniel on InstagramSound from Zapsplat.comA bit about the show and hostThe Talking Type 1 podcast is a diabetes podcast by Daniel Newman. 33. My 14 month old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and PCD in the same week
Cara's daughter lives with type 1 diabetes after being diagnosed at 14 months old. At diagnosis her daughter was also diagnosed with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) which is a rare, inherited, long-term condition that children are born with and they also found out that her daughter was born Situs Inversus which is a genetic condition in which the organs in the chest and abdomen are positioned in a mirror image from their normal positions. This was an intense period of time for Cara and her family, to say the least. I should also add that Cara was visiting a friend in Scotland from France where is where she lives. In our chat, Cara talks about life with type 1 and PCD, the practical challenges she and her family faced when leaving the UK to return to their home in France, and life afterwards. A poignant part of our conversation was when Cara shares the impact that .5 of a unit of insulin had on her daughter's glucose levels when she was still a baby.
