Exploring the Benefits of In-Person Field Trips in Virtual Learning Environments

Exploring the Benefits of In-Person Field Trips in Virtual Learning Environments
In this episode of Sage Studio, Tiffiny Webster sits down with Lana Beshara, Principal of Virtual Learning Academy (VLA), to discuss the incredible growth and success of the program. With over 600 students, VLA offers a unique virtual learning experience that goes beyond just online classes. Lana shares how they prioritize creating a sense of community and connection among students by organizing field trips and offline activities. From the very beginning, VLA had the vision of providing students with a different kind of virtual learning experience. They wanted to ensure that students not only had access to virtual curriculum and textbooks but also had the opportunity for hands-on learning with labs and projects. This approach has allowed students to have a more well-rounded educational experience, fostering connections with their peers and the real world.VLA organizes field trips for the entire school once a month, giving students the chance to not only meet each other in person but also experience real-life learning opportunities. As the program grew, they started adding grade-level field trips to further foster connections within specific classes. Now, students have the opportunity to participate in two grade-level field trips and one all-school field trip, totaling 12 different experiences throughout the year. These field trips have become the highlight of each month for VLA students. It's a time for them to see their friends, connect offline, and truly feel like they are part of a community. The grade-level field trips allow for more personalized connections, as students are able to interact with their own class in a more intimate setting. The all-school field trips expose students to different college and career opportunities, such as visiting the Pantages theater for a performance or attending a Clippers game. What sets VLA field trips apart is their focus on relevance to what students are learning in class. The trips are tied to grade-level standards, providing students with a hands-on, real-world experience that complements their curriculum. For example, during a trip to Knott's Berry Farm, students can explore concepts of force and motion, bringing their classroom studies to life. This connection between classroom learning and real-world experiences allows students to engage and retain knowledge in a more meaningful way.VLA's commitment to community extends beyond just the students. They encourage families to join in the field trips and other events. Even with a large student population, they aim to provide opportunities for family involvement, ensuring that the community feel extends to parents as well.Visit www.sageoak.education for more information on the program and how to provide your child with a well-rounded educational experience that extends beyond the virtual classroom.Thank you for listening to the Sage Studio podcast presented by Sage Oak Charter Schools and hosted by Tiffiny Webster, M.A.Ed. Getting Involved: How to Find Volunteer Opportunities and Make a Difference with PVSA
In this episode of the Sage Studio Podcast, Tiffiny Webster is joined by Regional Mentor, Taylore Coulombe, to discuss the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) program and Sage Serves. The PVSA program was established in 2003 by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation as a way to recognize the role of volunteers and their impact on communities. Sage Oak, being a certifying organization, offers this program to its students, starting from kindergarten to 12th grade.Participating in the PVSA program provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate character, accountability, excellence, growth mindset, and service, which are the student learning outcomes (SLOs) valued by Sage Oak. It not only helps students learn the values of giving back and service but it can also help high school students when completing college applications. Colleges often value a history of community service, and having the PVSA on college applications can make students stand out from the crowd. There are no set volunteer hour requirements and all students are welcome to participate. Students who are able and willing to serve in an extensive way can work towards earning awards for reaching service hour milestones. CTE Programs at Sage Oak: Preparing Students for Success in the Workforce

CTE Programs at Sage Oak: Preparing Students for Success in the Workforce
In this episode of the Sage Studio podcast, host Tiffiny Webster is joined by two guests, Traci King, HS Principal, and Laura Glaviota, HS Assistant Principal, The topic of discussion is Sage Oak's Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. CTE stands for Career Technical Education and refers to a sequence of courses aligned with a student's interest and intended to prepare them for specific careers. Sage Oak offers three pathways: Child Development, Sports Medicine, and Arts, Media and Entertainment. Each pathway consists of courses that provide students with the necessary skills for their chosen career. The inspiration behind implementing CTE programs at Sage Oak was the recognition of a clear disconnect between traditional education pathways and the practical skills that businesses expect from college graduates. Traci shares a statistic that only 11% of business leaders believed that college graduates were prepared to enter the workforce. To bridge this gap, Sage Oak introduced CTE programs to provide students with applicable skills that employers value. The CTE programs at Sage Oak differ from those in traditional brick and mortar schools due to the flexibility of the independent study model. Students can adapt their learning schedules to accommodate their commitments and engage with the content when they are most receptive. Additionally, Sage Oak has the ability to change CTE programs quickly to keep up with industry changes.Laura explains how the CTE courses are integrated into students' regular schedules. These courses fulfill graduation requirements and, in some cases, meet A-G requirements for students planning to attend a four-year college in California. By strategically selecting CTE courses, students can satisfy elective credit requirements while gaining expertise in a specific field of study for post-high school endeavors.Technology plays a crucial role in Sage Oak's CTE programs. Students gain real-world experience and certifications through hands-on activities and the use of up-to-date technology. For example, in the Arts, Media, and Entertainment pathway, students earn industry-recognized certifications in Adobe and Illustrator. In the Child Development program, students use computer-chipped "babies" to monitor their interactions and receive feedback on their caregiving skills.Overall, Sage Oak's CTE programs aim to prepare students for the workforce by providing them with practical skills and industry experience. The flexibility of the independent study model allows students to customize their learning schedules while fulfilling graduation and college entrance requirements. The events will take place at parks, with three socials scheduled on September 8th and three on September 15th, divided across various locations in Southern California.Parents are encouraged to attend and make the most of this opportunity to network with other families, meet teachers in a more informal setting, and explore available services. The socials aim to foster connections and relationships that can be invaluable in the independent study environment. It's a chance for students to meet new friends and for parents to connect with both new and experienced families who can provide support and resources. The Back to School Socials also offer an exciting opportunity for students to have their school pictures taken, as this has been a challenge in recent years. Parents are advised to sign up for school pictures in advance by visiting the provided link and uploading their child's photo for accurate matching. Overall, the Back to School Socials are a fantastic way to kickstart the school year, build connections, and create a positive learning environment for students. To learn more about the Back to School Socials, check the Sage News email or visit the website for dates and locations. In this episode of The Sage Studio Podcast, we have a special update from Kiley Duncan about the exciting developments at Sage Oak and the Oakschool program. Kiley shares her enthusiasm for the incredible opportunity offered to the Sage Oak families. One of the highlights is the integration of curriculum into Oakschool's core classes, which include math, reading, writing, history, and science. The school has purchased curriculum using a grant and will provide it for free to students enrolling in a full year of Oakschool classes. This curriculum includes Beast Academy Math, Singapore Math, History Alive, Generation Genius, and a novel writing program.Oakschool also offers a wide range of enrichment classes in subjects like Spanish, sign language, cooking, coding, adventure novel writing, and ukulele. The school focuses on foreign language, technology, and the arts to bring students together to collaborate, socialize, and be enriched.Enrollment for Oakschool is now open, and families are encouraged to visit the website at https://www.sageoak.education/oakschool/ for the catalog and detailed class descriptions. The website also provides filtering options by subject area, grade level, and quarter, making it easier for families to plan their schedules.Kiley, who has been with Sage Oak for 8 years and is now the Assistant Principal for the Personalized Learning Academy, is excited about the growth and success of the program. She actively seeks feedback from parents and teachers to improve the program and will continue to seek parent feedback and suggestions for the upcoming school year.Furthermore, Oakschool is expanding its program to more locations in quarter one and quarter four, with a focus on areas with high student populations. They have also hired new art teachers to offer free live art instruction in regional locations.
