#004 - Burning the Hand that Feeds
“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another,” said Mahatma Gandhi nearly a century ago, whose words hold true even to this day. Where does the food we eat come from? Does the cost justify the means? In this episode, a little boy from an Amazonian village shares his tale of personal loss due to the grave injustices in our food supply chain. Does it move Hannah, a young American intern in the area, enough to make more conscious choices in the food she buys? This episode highlights the need for awareness of the origins of our food and the loss of life and biodiversity that follows as a consequence of its unsustainable production. If you want to lend a hand, look no further! Amazon Watch is a non-profit organisation that protects the rainforest. It also spreads awareness about the plight of the indigenous people who are caught in the conflict between illegal deforestation in the Amazon basin. Check out their website and support their work at amazonwatch.org. It is a modern marvel to be able to fly, but are we ready to pay the full price? In this episode, Maria, a PhD student, goes through a roller-coaster of emotions as her sustainable choices of travel to a conference are hindered by rigid university policies. She chances upon an app that provides emission analysis and sustainable solutions in academic life. Will she find the courage to convince scientists and experts of the novel ways to reduce air travel among researchers? Will she manage to drive home her point at the risk of being marginalised by the academic society at large? This episode highlights the plight of a lot of eco-conscious academics who are discouraged from using more sustainable modes of transport due to short-sighted policies within academic institutions. It sheds light on initiatives like ExPlane, which is tackling this issue with a multidisciplinary approach.Does your university practice what they preach? Do you want to address the problem of unnecessary air travel at your university? Check out the campaign toolkit at ExPlane (timetoexplane.com) that can help you raise awareness on the climate impact of flying and change your university’s travel policy. ExPlane aims to eliminate unnecessary travel and ensure that all decisions to travel by air are made consciously and with full awareness of the environmental impacts. It does this by asking universities to adopt fair and sustainable travel policies.CREDITS:Written by Kelsey DanksSound and direction by Thiviya NairProduction by Thomas RiedingerResearch by ExPlane and Claudia Moreno MenesesAlbum art by Marie PlesseCopywriting by Soham DattaPartnerships by Simona JastremskaiteCAST:Marta da Silva as MariaSarah Golding as EstherRuthanna Reardon as Scrybe App and NarratorLuis Alberto Martin as Speaker 1Aleksander Stepanovic as Speaker 2Amy Zhang representing ExPlaneKim von de Heide representing ExPlaneNo Place Green Enough is created by a team of scientists and artists collaborating to bring you interesting stories from across the globe. A wise man once said, "To the Dolphin alone, beyond all other, nature has granted what the best philosophers seek: friendship for no advantage."Does the captain of a fishing fleet have what it takes to follow his conscience and listen to nature’s voice? Will he take a stand against the corrupt fisheries system by putting his livelihood on the line?Dive into 'Finny Business' as Thibaud Durand, captain of a French fishing vessel, and his men get caught in a thunderstorm in the Bay of Biscay and how the life-changing moments that follow spark his conscience to face up to his boss, stay firm against the corrupt system and put his money where his mouth is.This episode sheds light on the conflict between man and nature due to overfishing and looks forward to potentially sustainable solutions to safeguard the species diversity in exploited marine ecosystems.Help the dolphins in the Bay of Biscay! Thousands of them die over the winter season, as they are incidentally trapped in fishing nets. Join over 360,000 sea lovers and sign this petition to call for urgent measures to protect our dolphins. You can also check out Seas At Risk, an NGO working for the protection of our ocean and marine life.Sea Shepherd and Whale and Dolphin Conservation are also organisations that work towards protection for the dolphins on the Bay of Biscay.CREDITS:Written by Thiviya Nair and Thomas Riedinger. Sound and direction by Thiviya Nair. Research by Claudia Moreno Meneses. Album art by Marie Plesse. Copywriting by Soham Datta. Partnerships by Simona Jastremskaite. CAST:Matthew Vanston as Captain Thibaud Durand. Beatrice Armstrong as Ekko the Dolphin and Child. Aleksander Stepanovic as Maxime Marchand the Fishery Manager. Alain D’Regel as First Officer David. Rama Cruz as Deckhand 1, Loic. Gabriel Acuña as Deckhand 2, Damien. Myriam Lebon as Mother. Yina Perez as Tourist. Thiviya Nair as the Narrator. No Place Green Enough is created by a team of scientists and artists collaborating to bring you impactful stories from across the globe.
