Oceans Away From Home with Devan Schowe

Oceans Away From Home with Devan Schowe
Devan Schowe, a campaign's associate for Born Free USA delves into the "Oceans Away from Home" report, which highlights the suffering of fish in captivity. Fish often face challenges that parallel those of larger, more commonly studied captive animals. This report emphasizes the challenges these aquatic creatures encounter, including compromised welfare and limited opportunities for species-specific behaviors. A research bias further sidelines fish, underscoring the need to value all animals, irrespective of their similarities or differences from humans.Additionally, the rising surge of octopus farming in Spain, raises ethical concerns due to the remarkable intelligence of these creatures. Octopus farming subjects highly intelligent and solitary beings to stressful and unnatural conditions, posing ethical and ecological dilemmas. This industry's potential consequences for octopus populations, marine ecosystems, and animal welfare are of great concern, especially given the absence of protective regulations within the European Union.Furthermore, our discussion uncovers "The Lies Zoos Tell," highlighting the lack of care for animals in some of these facilities. Even accredited zoos, striving to replicate natural habitats, often fall short in providing essential elements for animal well-being. This prompts a critical question: Is keeping animals captive in zoos justifiable? The resounding answer is "NO."Join us in this conversation, challenging our perspectives on animal treatment and advocating for a more compassionate approach to their well-being.

Wildlands Network with Ron Sutherland
Wild for Change with Nicole RojasWildlands Network's Chief Scientist, Ron Sutherland, discusses the importance of rewilding efforts and their vision of continental wildways to promote wildlife conservation in North America. Rewilding, a concept rooted in letting nature reclaim its territory, emphasizes the need to reintroduce keystone species to restore ecological balance. Ron explains how rewilding helps to manage ecosystems more efficiently and highlights the case of Yellowstone's wolf reintroduction, which led to a cascade of positive ecological effects. The concept of continental wildways involves creating extensive wildlife corridors to connect natural areas, enhancing biodiversity and promoting species migration, especially in the face of climate change. Ron Sutherland emphasizes the importance of partnerships with land trusts and conservation organizations to establish these corridors and protect critical habitats. He cites specific examples like the Eastern Wildway, Rocky Mountain Wildway, and Pacific Wildway, each tailored to the unique needs of the region and its wildlife. The wildway approach is not only beneficial for wildlife but also aids in climate change adaptation by facilitating species' movement northward as temperatures rise. Wildlands Network collaborates with various organizations to implement these corridors and make progress on the ground, marking significant strides in conservation efforts. You can learn more about Wildlands Network and support their work online at: https://wildlandsnetwork.org/ About NicoleIn a journey fueled by a profound love for animals and nature, a former physical therapist from Chicago has transformed her life into a dedicated mission to protect endangered species. Peter Singer
Nikita Dhawan hosts Effective Animal Advocacy with guest Professor Peter Singer, a renowned philosopher and author known for his work in animal ethics and animal rights. Peter discusses his initial involvement in the field of animal ethics, emphasising his ethical background and realisation of the ethical issues in animal treatment, particularly in factory farming. He highlights the importance of considering the well-being of all conscious beings, not just humans, in ethical decision-making.Peter explains the concept of animal liberation philosophy, which advocates giving equal consideration to the interests and suffering of animals, challenging the notion that intelligence should be the sole determinant of moral consideration. He draws parallels between speciesism and other forms of discrimination, such as racism and sexism, to highlight the moral inconsistency in favouring humans based solely on intelligence. The interview touches on the updated edition of Singer's book, "Animal Liberation," and its relevance to contemporary animal welfare issues. Singer discusses the progress made by the animal rights movement and the challenges it still faces, particularly concerning factory farming. He addresses counterarguments and the complexities of ethical positions, especially when it comes to rearing animals in humane conditions for food consumption.Peter provides insights into the harsh realities of modern-day factory farming, focusing on the overcrowded and inhumane conditions in which chickens are raised. He highlights the health and welfare problems caused by rapid growth due to selective breeding and the high mortality rates among young chickens. Singer underscores the need for reform in the treatment of animals in the agricultural industry.https://petersinger.info
Death sentence handed to wild monkeys of Sint Maarten, can we still save them?

Death sentence handed to wild monkeys of Sint Maarten, can we still save them?
Reality Checks with Staci-lee The Government of Sint Maarten has decided to kill ALL their wild monkeys as a form of population control. Horrified by this policy a letter was sent to the government in March 2023 from the world’s leading primate and animal welfare organizations. The letter had 75 signatories offering their support in an effort to halt the death sentence. Born Free USA is leading the effort to save the monkeys. The alternative proposed would be to sterilize the monkeys, at no cost to taxpayers and let the monkeys live out their lives while going extinction naturally as breeding would cease. As of today these groups are still awaiting a response and the fate of the monkeys hangs in the balance though the government seems to have started the killing already. Have a listen as Dr Missy Williams, who runs the Dania Beach Vervet Project in Florida, talks about the monkeys, false claims and how people can help. Please take a moment to contact the Nature Foundation on the island who has refused to give out information about the monkeys https://naturefoundationsxm.org/ Also contact the government and ask they stop the killing and choose the humane alternative Egbert J. Free Mara & Baby Elephants with Veronika Jancikova
All About Elephants Show hosted by Nikita Dhawan Veronika, a lawyer and animal activist, initiated a campaign for the release of Mara and Baby, two elephants confined in a roadside zoo in Slovakia. These elephants were previously circus performers and have been subjected to cruel training and poor living conditions. Veronika aims to find a sanctuary for them and bring about legal changes to prevent similar animal abuse. The conditions in the zoo are inadequate, with limited space, poor flooring, and a lack of proper food and water. The elephants exhibit signs of stress and aggression. Veronika's campaign has gained international support, with over 65,000 signatures on the petition. ✍🏼 https://www.change.org/p/help-to-save-mara-and-baby-from-miserable-captivity-in-roadside-zoo-in-slovakia 🐘 Mara and Baby are Asian female elephants owned by a circus and have been performing their entire lives. 🚚 The circus, now called a roadside zoo, still travels and exhibits the elephants after animal circus acts were banned in Slovakia in 2019. 🏞️ The elephants are kept in a small enclosure most of the time, locked in a truck during travel or exhibitions. 🍏 Visitors can interact with the elephants by feeding them fruits and vegetables, but the elephants' access to proper food and water is limited. 🧠 The elephants exhibit stereotypical behavior, aggression toward each other, and signs of mental distress resulting from the cruel training they underwent. 💪 Veronika's campaign aims to re-home Mara and Baby in a sanctuary, advocating for a change in current laws to prevent similar animal abuse. 🌍 Support for the campaign comes from both local and international organizations, with over 65,000 signatures collected on the petition.
