EP099- How to create a fruit garden this barefoot season.EP098- No Dig Gardening. Whats my verdict after one complete year?
With "No Dig" gardening gaining support in many gardening circles I wanted to give my verdict after almost two years using it in my garden. The results have been really good and quiet surprising in some cases. In an area with high weed pressure I had next to no weeds. Better crops generally with less watering. Soil health has improves and in one area of really poor soil the soil is now full of earthworms through nothing else only adding fresh grass clippings. So whatever size or type of gardening you do I feel there is huge benefit from using a No Dig approach to gardening. With episode 100 of Master My Garden podcast coming up I want to celebrate with you the listeners of the podcast. With that in mind I am looking for listers to tell me their gardening story and how the podcast is helping you in your garden.  Please drop me an email to info@mastermygarden.com or message me through my website https://mastermygarden.com/contact/Look forward to hearing from you to make episode 100 a great one. EP096- Planting garlic, reducing my lawn area and more
In this weeks episode of Master My Garden podcast John talks about jobs we can be doing in the garden in November and also some jobs that John will be doing in his own garden. November is a great month to plant garlic and onion sets. By planting in November you will get your crop a month earlier than by planting sets in spring, but more importantly you will greatly reduce the chance of bolting in your onions and garlic. Broad beans, sweet peas and perennials can also be sown now. John also talks about how he is creating a wildflower area using yellow rattle and underplanting with naturalising bulbs. In this weeks episode of Master My Garden Podcast I am joined by Dr. Karen O Hanlon to talk about the benefits of Biochar in your garden. Biochar is now starting to become spoken about quiet a lot and its benefits are far reaching and definitive. It has 58 stated uses but specifically in gardening terms it has huge benefits such as locking in carbon, retaining moisture, increasing the microbial action around the rootzone, increasing yields, improving plants resistance to disease, reduces acidity in the soil etc. Many craft gardeners speak of the benefits of biochar especially in plants with restricted root zones such as urban trees, bonsai plants and alpine plants. Karen's company Probio Carbon goes one step further by inoculating  their own produced biochar with beneficial bacteria that give plants a huge boost especially for plant health. You can find Karen's company at this address.  https://www.probiocarbon.ieMaster My Garden is now on buy me a coffee which is a platform where you can buy me a coffee as a one off or on a monthly basis to show your support of the show. EP082- How to create a pollinator heaven in an urban environment with Anne Hutton & Liam Kelly gardeners and beekeepers
In this weeks episode of Master My Garden podcast I talk to Anne Hutton & Liam Kelly in their wonderful garden in Carlow town.  Liam described the garden as pollinator heaven in an urban setting so I said I have to see that. The garden didn't disappoint and just shows what can be achieved even in an urban setting if you want to help and provide for our pollinators. Anne & Liam are both beekeepers and have hives in this urban garden so as you would expect the honey bees were out in force when I visited but what stood out was the amount of other pollinators and wildlife that they have managed to attract. Their gardening ethos or way is to grow food for themselves and the pollinators side by side. So perennial borders and inter planted with herbs, fruit bushes and vegetables all in perfect harmony with no fuss, just natural beauty.  Anne is pro/ secretary and Liam is chairperson  of Carlow Beekeepers Association and their website is https://carlowbeekeepers.com/ you will find all the links for their social channels there. Anne is also pro for Fibka and you can find their website here https://irishbeekeeping.ieAnne & Liam share their knowledge and some new products from their garden here.  https://www.instagram.com/thebeehutt/?hl=enThere will be a blog post on this episode very soon on my website.
