“While they were traveling, he entered a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s feet and was listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.” The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her.””

‭‭Luke‬ ‭10:38-42‬ ‭CSB‬‬

.

If Jesus was on the way to your house what would you be doing?

Mary was in position. She was ready to hear from Jesus. She was focused on Him. She was listening.

.

Martha was serving but distracted. She was multitasking. As women, we are the queens of multitasking

.

Martha was actually doing a good thing by preparing for Jesus. We can be actually doing great things for Jesus and still be distracted from Jesus.

.

He wants to serve, but he also wants you to sit.

Your serving shouldn’t take away from the personal time alone with Him.

.

So Martha complains to Jesus about what she felt like was lack on her sister’s behalf.

.

Jesus responds: You're worried and upset about many things.

To be anxious, troubled with cares. Upset-disturb (bothered)

.

He tells her there is one thing to be concerned about and Mary chose that.

.

He was that one thing.

.

“My choice is you, GOD, first and only. And now I find I’m your choice!

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭16:5-6‬ ‭MSG‬‬

“I have asked one thing from the Lord; it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the Lord and seeking him in his temple.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭27:4‬ ‭CSB‬‬

“When Jesus heard this, he told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell all you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.””

‭‭Luke‬ ‭18:22‬ ‭CSB‬‬

What can we learn from these two women :

  • Be like Mary, sit at the feet of Jesus everyday and watch your Martha spirit start to diminish.
  • When you are in the Martha spirit of doing even when its good, remember it rather have a personal relationship with you than you doing all the things.
  • Be unbothered like Mary. Mary was focused and positioned. She was right where she wanted and needed to be.
  • Choose Jesus as your one thing. Make him first, desire to meet at his feet, gaze on his beauty and his word, seeking home daily.
  • Get rid of the things and people who is keeping you from the one thing.

Digest?

Who do you identify most with Mary or Martha?

If you are in the Martha spirit of doing , how can you release that spirit and become more like Mary?

Are you bothered? Maybe because you are doing too much?

What need to let go to put Jesus in the position of 1?
