Our Editor's Take

True Consequences - True Crime is a podcast about crime victims in New Mexico. The host of the show is Eric Carter-Landin, who went through a terrible true crime tragedy as a child. When he was six, his mom's boyfriend murdered his nine-month-old brother, Jacob. No charges were ever brought up against the boyfriend, despite the clear evidence. Eric has made it his mission to find justice for Jacob and other crime victims.

In each episode of the podcast, Eric tells listeners about a cold case. One episode explores the murder of Jonathan Saiz in Albuquerque. His family believes that the police botched the investigation and hopes new evidence will emerge with new leads. In another episode, Eric tells the story of Angie Romero. In October 2018, after a fight with her boyfriend, she left the house on foot and disappeared. There has been no sign of her since.

True Consequences also includes more detailed discussions of some cases. In a seven-part series, Eric tells the story of Father Reynaldo Rivera. He was a beloved figure in his community. In 1982, Reynaldo received a call asking him to perform last rites. He drove to the agreed-upon meeting place, where someone shot him and hid his body in the nearby woods. The investigation that followed brought no leads. To this day, his killer is still at large.

The host sometimes invites guests onto the podcast. These guests are victims' advocates or true crime podcasters. Two guests, Whitney and Melissa, host Navigating Advocacy, another victim-focused true crime show. Occasionally, Eric attends events like CrimeCon UK for chats with like-minded people.

People who love true crime for its advocacy may enjoy True Consequences - True Crime. Its local focus means that many of the stories shared do not get national attention. For that reason, they may be new to listeners.

Dione had several tribal connections via her parents, Debbie and Laffie Begay. As a Native American woman, Dione Begay is one of many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in New Mexico who is yet to receive justice, despite the brutality inflicted upon her and the obvious circumstances of the crime. Her family's pleas for help have also continued to be ignored. Justice for Tyra Perry with Navigating Advocacy
Angels' Voices Silenced No More is a non-profit organization that raises funds to help families in New Mexico who are fighting for justice pay for: TherapyFuneral expensesDNA TestingPrivate InvestigationsAwareness campaigns and moreToday I am joined by Navigating Advocacy and we are bringing you a 35 year old cold case that needs justice. Check out my friends Whitney and Melissa at: https://navigatingadvocacy.com/Tyra Perry's case becomes the focal point of "Action Oriented Advocacy," shedding light on her life, the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, and the subsequent murder investigation. The narrative reveals contradictory statements, potential suspects, and the passage of time that has left the case unsolved for 35 years. Despite challenges and limited media coverage, the group tells the importance of not forgetting victims like Tyra Perry and others impacted by violence in Albuquerque. The story then describes advocacy groups' efforts, like the New Mexico Crusaders for Justice, and their collaboration in organizing a "honk and wave" event to draw attention to victims of violence and demand justice and change. The event's success in bringing together over 60 people, including family members of other victims, underscores the commitment of these advocates to seek resolution and raise awareness about the impact of violence on their communities.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-consequences-true-crime--4347262/support.
