The Gibson Brothers Bluegrass Royalty Inspire with Song & Story
Join Steve Yusko has he explores The Gibson Brothers, Eric and Leigh. Bluegrass royalty Leigh and Eric Gibson step into what some might at first see as uncharted territory on their country-soul breakout Mockingbird, the new album produced by Grammy Award winners Dan Auerbach &Fergie Ferguson. Please Subscribe Here: Https://linktr.ee/thelongislandsoundpodcastThe celebrated bluegrass duo — named back-to-back Entertainers of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2012 and 2013 — played the Nashville game two decades ago, while in their early 20s, and were offered a major label deal, only to be told at the last minute that they were too “retro” for modern country music. The Gibson Brothers have had their greatest success in the world of bluegrass, but their talent knows no bounds. Songwriting is at the core of who they are, and on their latest album "Darkest Hour" which releases on January 27, 2023. they deliver 12 tracks produced by Jerry Douglas. The majority of this album was recorded with a standard bluegrass configuration, but a few of the tracks have lap steel, percussion, and electric guitar masterfully blended together by Jerry. They began work on this album just before the world shut down in March 2020.As Northerners growing up in a Southern business, they had to work twice as hard as the bands from the South to achieve the success they had, and were the first from that far north to carve a path to IBMA Entertainers of the Year.“The songs on this album are the sounds we heard growing up, riding around with our dad, who was a farmer, in his pickup, or with our mom in her station wagon. This sound was on the radio,” says Leigh, citing the Eagles, Bob Seger, Tom Petty,  and the warm country sounds of Don Williams, Emmylou Harris and Waylon Jennings as influences for Mockingbird, produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach with Fergie Ferguson (Johnny Cash, Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers). The members of R.E.M. certainly agree. “It’s incredible! They did a great job,” says vocalist Michael Stipe. “It really re-focuses the song and lyric in a great way.” Bassist Mike Mills offers, “Wow. I really didn’t see that one coming. I love it,” with guitarist Peter Buck echoing those remarks: “Wow. Incredible.” Even Bill Berry, R.E.M.’s former drummer, and one of the original writers of the song, chimes in, saying, “It’s the best cover of it I’ve heard.Call the Listener Line (631) 800-3579 and leave your comments for our host and guests. Please Subscribe Here: Https://linktr.ee/thelongislandsoundpodcast Call the Listener Line and leave us your impressions (631) 800-3579Support the showConnect with us here: Https://linktr.ee/thelongislandsoundpodcast If you like what you hear, click the link below to support us with a secure donation. https://www.paypal.com/donate?token=lg4LOxiWjgFS8z75NJpziIIRYXvpvtm6oZ2VlYE5eedpGDcJ-YD1ybtpJZiAWaSa1HKHDPX7IFp9uisz

Gene Casey's Roots-Rock Music Captivating Fans on an Adventurous Journey
Gene Casey's Roots-Rock Music Captivating Fans on an Adventurous Journey. In this episode your host Steve Yusko get you acquainted with Gene Casey, the artist behind some fantasitc Alt-Country Music.  Gene  formed the Lone Sharks, “the house band of the Hamptons,” where bars were plentiful and audiences – both the local and the celebrated – were robust and loyal. Over the course of the next few decades Gene and the evolving line-up of Sharks “played – and tore up – every roadhouse, bar, and honky tonk from Manhattan to Montauk” (Bop Magazine), sharing the bill and backing legendary roots rock & roll acts as Wanda Jackson, the Band, Bo Diddley, Sleepy LaBeef, NRBQ, and the Ventures.Gene’s original music met with great acclaim with local and international indie radio play. Several of his roots-drenched songs have been used in “A Prairie Home Companion” and on the soundtracks to television and feature films, including “Justified” and “Sons of Anarchy” ; the 2012 thriller “The Tall Man” starring Jessica Biel, the 2013 release “The Killing Season” starring Robert DeNiro, and Rob Reiner’s “Being Charlie.”In 2014 Gene and the Lone Sharks were inducted into the Dan’s Papers “Best of the Best” Hall of Fame, having been honored over 20 times.  received the Long Island Sound Award by the L.I. Music Hall of Fame, “for contributions to the Island’s musical landscape.”2017 saw the release of “Guitar In The Rain” an album celebrating the roots of contemporary Americana with original songs that evoke the romantic sweep of 60s pop, classic C&W and the raw untamed spirit of early rock & roll.2020 brings “Free Country: Essential Recordings” a compilation of some of the best songs culled from 20 years of  work, as well as  a unique arrangement of the public domain standard, “Home on the Range” where all of Gene’s influences and obsessions seem to converge.Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast Intro/Outro song in this episode: “Fading out Fast” from Mike Nugent’s album, Mike Nugent and the Blue Moon Band . Gregory Dwane - How to Successfully Navigate Tumultuous Times
How to Successfully Navigate Tumultuous Times in the Music Industry with Gregory Dwane. In this episode you'll hear from Gregory Dwane, a successful industry veteran who has managed the twists and turns of the music industry. Starting out from a rural town in North Carolina to Nashville and finally working the music studios in New York city. This Singer/Songwriter can be discribed as Alt-Country and he has so many stories to tell. We'll hear three of his songs as we learn some great skills for musicians and singer/songwriters to navigate the tumultuous waters of the music business today. Find Gregory Dwane's Spotify List hereGregory Dwane is a lifer. From his humble beginnings in rural North Carolina to eventually touring around the world as a tech and his recent work as producer for Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, Dwane has seen many facets of the music industry first-hand.  An in-the-pocket rhythm section, some smoking electric guitar and fiddle, and some classic rock riffs for good measure, all amount to an infectious debut that’s as refreshing as it is retro. An interest in recording engineering inspired Dwane to relocate from his home near Trinity, N.C. to New York in the early ‘90s, which eventually led to his producing records and playing in punk bands. Ten years later, amid the crashing and burning that hit after years of alcohol abuse, a phone call to a friend and former manager who was working with Alanis Morrisette ended up being a lifeline. Dwane hightailed it to LA and joined Morrisette’s road crew as a keyboard tech, a serendipitous move that suddenly changed his trajectory in a major way. “I went from thinking my world was over to touring the world,” Dwane recalls. The Alanis gig led to tech work with Dave Navarro and Macy Gray, and eventually to getting sober. “That opened up my whole world,” he says, as it opened new doors to work with like-minded sober musicians, including a Sony record deal with the band Mellowdrone, which he joined as bassist.Shortly thereafter, an unexpected entry into fatherhood led him to look for more stable employment. Enter friend Michael Fitzpatrick (of Fitz and the Tantrums), who introduced him to jingle writing, which he ended up doing for the next 15 years, a period that also saw him producing two albums for Amy Ray and working with others in the riot grrrl / queercore scene (Kaia Wilson of Team Dresch, The Butchies, and more). Despite the healthy paychecks, eventually he burned out on jingle writing and music in general, as he explains, “it’s a hard way to make a living … a fully produced song practically every day for 15 years.” Dwane left the music industry completely — at least as far as making a living — and instead took up fine art painting, which led him to launch a small gallery in Brooklyn. Call the Listener Line (631) 800-3579 and leave your comments for our host and guests.

Josie Bello Conquering Cantankerous Divide with Hopeful Folk Music

Josie Bello Conquering Cantankerous Divide with Hopeful Folk Music
Conquering Cantankerous Divide with Hopeful Folk Music by Josie BelloFolk Singer/Songwriter joins our host Steve Yusko for an engaging conversation about the power of music, the divide in our nation and her rise on the music scene as a self-proclaimed, "Late-bloomer".  We explore three of songs and learn about ways to further expose original music in our world. Josie Bello has been musical from an early age. She would often walk around the house, humming or singing some tune she had formed in her head, so frequently that her mother would ask her to "please pipe down". Growing up in Queens, NY, it is no surprise that her musical hero is Bruce Springsteen - an artist she wishes she could channel into her own songwriting at times. But then again, doesn’t every songwriter want… need... to channel “The Boss.” Josie's writing process is spontaneous, at times a phrase or chord progression that gets written down only to sit for a time, until the moment is right. Other times it comes in a rush, allowing her to grab the inspiration of the moment and run with it. In the past few years, she’s recorded and released two albums with songwriter and producer, Mike Nugent. It is her desire that her music can provide you with a simple respite from the troubles of the day or, if nothing else, the simple joy that music holds.Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast Intro/Outro song in this episode: “Fading out Fast” from Mike Nugent’s album, Mike Nugent and the Blue Moon Band .
