EP 33: Weight gain and fatigue? Consider your Thyroid
When it comes to fatigue and weight gain, we need to rule out a thyroid problem. Your thyroid can be thrown off depending on the seasons of your life. So, how should you assess it and when should you treat it or can you just leave it and hope for the best? Instead of taking meds blindly, we want to arm you with information to make the right choice for you. It’s important to look at the clinical lab piece and get the big picture with a full thyroid blood panel beyond the TSH value. If you're into numbers, you'll love this. Even if you're not, you're going to learn to take charge of your health. In addition to the emotional connection and how that can impact the thyroid, Dr Tanya and Mary share their own stories in how their thyroid impacted their fertility and lives. Has your life been impacted by your thyroid? We want to hear all about it… if you have more questions after this episode, check back for the next two episodes all about thyroid health and comment below so we can address any and all of your questions. EP 31: Do you suddenly want a baby more than ever? (ft. Jillian Michaels)
Did you ever think that you'd have a life without kids but then your maternal clock kicked in and the next thing you know an insatiable drive to have kids? The drive is there, but then you realize there are technical issues. When it comes to creating a family, technical issues can arise in many circumstances from blocked fallopian tubes to needing donor eggs or sperm. It can be even more challenging in a same sex relationship. In some countries, they do not allow adoption to gay parents … which is ridiculous but that’s not todays topic. If you want a baby with your own DNA, you need to find a sperm donor in the instance of a two woman relationship. You need to find an egg donor and a surrogate to carry your baby in the instance of a two man relationship. At the end of the day and beyond the technical challenges, the emotional struggle is not much different as we strive to create our families in heterosexual relationships with fertility challenges. We spoke with Jillian Michaels, the iconic personal trainer, best known for being on NBC’s, The Biggest Loser, author, and creator of The Fitness App. Jillian shared her story of how her and her wife, Heidi at the time had two babies a week apart. Curious? You’ve gotta check out this episode to learn more. @jillianmichaels Instagram: @drtanyawylde_nd @aliveholistichealthclinic @meetmarywong Please like, comment, share and give us ideas what content is resonating with you, or what you’d like to hear. EP 27: Abnormal Embryos Make Healthy Babies - Fact or Fiction?
May 10 2022
EP 27: Abnormal Embryos Make Healthy Babies - Fact or Fiction?
EP 27: Abnormal Embryos Make Healthy Babies - Fact or Fiction? Subtitle What you should know about IVF genetic testing ( PGT-A)  Do you need genetic testing on IVF embryos? It’s difficult enough to embark on an IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) journey, let alone decide what “add ons'' you need to have to get your baby… faster.  To minimize overwhelm and confusion, we are taking a close look at a recently published article from the NY Times so that you can make an informed choice without regret.   The message, according to the article, is that chromosomal testing (PGT-A) is bad for patients because healthy babies have been born from abnormal embryos … supposedly. Yet, fertility clinics continue to recommend PGT-A which costs thousands of dollars. WHY? There has to be something we are missing…  To get to the bottom of this, we invited our dear friend and trusted fertility specialist, Dr. Prati Sharma and geneticist Nicole Logan, to break down the original scientific paper by Dr. Norbert Gleicher that NY Times is referring to.   It turns out the so-called “Abnormal Embryos” that became babies were mainly Mosaic embryos… meaning they were not abnormal.  It’s more accurate to say, Mosaic embryos can make healthy babies.  The lesson is don’t choose to test (or not test) based on what you read…. which may be sensationalized or partial truths. Learn from us and dig deeper. This convo is too juicy to skip.  For Social media: Go to My Fertology podcast in link in bio to get the real deal before you make an informed decision.  Share this important information with friends and loved ones. EP 26: Mothering the Mother Within (with Dr. Susan Fox)
May 4 2022
EP 26: Mothering the Mother Within (with Dr. Susan Fox)
EP 26: Mothering the Mother Within (with Dr. Susan Fox) With the anticipated Mother's Day coming up, this time and many other holidays can be triggering for those who are trying to conceive. When every waking thought is to fulfill on becoming a mother, the desire to build or expand one's family may feel like it's out of reach. This desire can build up to an energetic level that creates what we call Liver Qi Stagnation, where the creative potential feels suppressed, and we can begin to feel depressed or angry. Then, in the face of a celebration like Mother's Day, a woman can feel isolated and misunderstood. We grieve for that which we love, and the unrequited love of a conception not happening month over month, possibly year over year amplifies our grief. So today, it's important to honour mothers in waiting. It's where we give ourselves permission to stop pretending that everything is all "rainbows and unicorns." Instead, treat ourselves kindly. Today, we speak meaningfully from the heart. We can't wait for you to join our conversation with our dear friend Dr. Susan Fox, TCM doctor who has been supporting women and couples in their fertility journeys for the past 20 years. You deserve to feel heard and held. EP 24: Organic or No Organic?
Apr 19 2022
EP 24: Organic or No Organic?
EP 24: Organic or No Organic Do you ever wonder if it’s really necessary to go organic? Is it a farce? Will it make a difference in your health. What fruits and vegetables can I buy that doesn’t have to be organic? Finding reasonably priced Certified organic to lessen pesticide load is possible. Healthy skin longer, younger, liver doesn’t have to work as hard to detoxify so if I do little things to reduce the load of - over the years, consistently over time. Do you buy the fresh organic that doesn’t look so good or frozen organic? Mold tends to grow on organic strawberries which is a good thing because it’s live and doesn't have chemicals and better quality. But if they don’t look, choose another fruit. 3 months of organic - sperm assessments are better found in research. Pushing industry to try to produce more organic. More demand, the better the less we all get. The more the large retailers will buy it and will push the price down. Ultimate is local farm, organic, fresh off the tree. It can get confusing, better to choose local ; organic first and locally farmed second. Vitamins and minerals displaced by heavy metals. How do we balance it out? Go for sources that have lower mercury, higher in omega 3’s. EP 23: TCM Perspectives

EP 23: TCM Perspectives
EP 23: TCM Perspectives Have you ever looked at your tongue and wondered what it means?  Did you know that you can get a lot of information about your body by looking at your tongue, checking your pulse and menstrual cycle blood? Are you suffering from menstrual pain and wondering what to do about it? Have you ever wanted to treat your pain before it comes!? Getting a proper western diagnosis can be very helpful but so can getting a Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis using your symptom history, tongue and pulse! Although we can take ibuprofen and NSAIDs with each period to address the pain, if we overdo this, we can get stomach gastritis and ulcers.  Treating the pain before it comes sounds better than ever. TCM practitioner, Mary Wong teaches us how to take a proactive approach to menstrual pain by addressing blood stasis. What the heck is blood stasis? Listen in to find out. It's a traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis that is often used when a woman has endometriosis. Endometriosis is a topic we covered in Episode 21 with Dr. Sharma, from a western perspective. Today we discuss how to consider it from a TCM perspective which includes using the Tongue and Pulse as a way to diagnose and treat endo. How do you deal with blood stasis? You move blood…which kicks menstrual pain to the curb and can improve your quality of life and fertility. Learn the impact of acupuncture and some easy at home treatments to prevent and treat menstrual pain from a TCM perspective.  Endometriosis doesn't always cause menstrual pain but for some women it can cause an even more grueling form of menstrual pain. Look out for our next episode where we will discuss effective lifestyle strategies including movement, nutrition and supplementation strategies to improve Endo. EP 22: Does Endometriosis Cause Infertility? w/ Dr. Prati Sharma
Apr 5 2022
EP 22: Does Endometriosis Cause Infertility? w/ Dr. Prati Sharma
EP 22: Does Endometriosis Cause Infertility? w/ Dr. Prati Sharma Many women live with endometriosis (Endo) and don’t even know it. Some women with Endo have pain.   Some have such debilitating pain, that they can’t even go to school or work when they get their periods… and they just live with it. Then, there are others who don't experience pain at all. Special guest Dr Prati Sharma, fertility specialist from CREATE fertility ( who we interviewed in episode 15 “Are Prenatal tests wrong”) took the time out of her day to be interviewed after emailing Mary to say we should educate people about Endometriosis because March is “Endo awareness month”  This is an episode that you do not want to miss because she did a kick ass job! Endometriosis is something women may suffer from all year long, month after month so it's important to learn all things endo any time. In this episode we’re talking about how to diagnose and treat it properly from a western medicine perspective.  Here are some of the hot Endo topics that she covers: The basics What is endometriosis?Theories behind why people have EndoBest way to diagnose Endo? How does it impact pelvic pain? How does it impact a woman's fertility?Does it impact pregnancy? What you can do postpartum Getting into the details Receptiva test to assess for endometriosis, and what happens if you are BCL6 positiveThe impact of progesterone on women with Endo and how some are resistant to Progesterone which may impede implantationThe difference between ERA and the Reciptiva testDoes she see her patients with Endo improve with TCM, acupuncture, naturopathic medicine and lifestyle? EP 21: Does IVF Cause Early Menopause? w/ Dr. Ari Baratz
Mar 29 2022
EP 21: Does IVF Cause Early Menopause? w/ Dr. Ari Baratz
EP 21: Does IVF Cause Early Menopause? w/ Dr. Ari Baratz Does IVF put you into early menopause? Hello Magazine led many to believe this to be true when they quoted celebrity Kourtney Kardashian who is currently going through IVF treatments to try to have another baby. Kourtney said "The medication that they’ve been giving me, put me into menopause. Literally into menopause." Facing infertility is challenging enough. Worrying about going into menopause prematurely due to IVF, raises unnecessary concerns or fears which might stop you from continuing IVF treatment or you may take it off the table altogether. This is not helpful especially if you are someone who would benefit from IVF treatments (eg. in the case of male factor infertility, blocked fallopian tubes, PCOS, to name a few). But here’s the thing, there is NO evidence to support this. Mary and I are not Reproductive endocrinologists. We are in the field of natural medicine who think about the whole human. We do not want you to be misinformed by social media and delay your positive outcome of a healthy pregnancy. The truth is, IVF may create temporary peri-menopause type symptoms but all the research shows that it CANNOT put you into real menopause. Our guest Dr. Baratz, fertility doctor from CREATE Fertility Center in Toronto gives us the details on why this is not possible and how Kourtney Kardashian’s words were misunderstood and her situation was not properly explained and hence false conclusions were made. IVF and fertility treatments are a huge investment in time and energy and Dr. Baratz acknowledges all of us who have experienced infertility and sought fertility treatments but he wants us to know that IVF is indeed safe and will not cause menopause. Mary and I share our personal experiences with IVF including Mary who did go into menopause at 47 (a normal age for menopause) after IVF while I am currently menstruating as we write this summary, 10 years after IVF. We both recognize however the symptoms of IVF treatments such as TEMPORARY bloating, weight gain, mood changes, hot flushes, night sweats, brain fog, anxiety, changes in menstrual regularity are REAL symptoms you may have or may experience going through IVF. These symptoms are very similar to those experienced by many peri-menopausal women. Mary experienced Brain fog, weight gain, and mood swings through IVF and Tanya did not experience any symptoms from her usual PCOS symptom history. What’s the bottom line? IVF does NOT cause menopause…it can cause a “menstrual pause” and symptoms some women experience through peri-menopause.

EP 20: Fertility Myth Busting w/ Dr. Meivys Garcia
EP 20: Fertility Myth Busting w/ Dr. Meivys Garcia If you haven’t already, go back and listen to Part 1 of this amazing interview on EP 19! Do Fertility drugs cause cancer or can IVF cause autism or ADHD? These are some of the most common concerns women have when thinking about fertility drugs. The short answer is NO. Even though fertility specialist Dr. Garcia knew better, it didn't stop her from doing endless research just to be sure because she had a cancer scare after 5 rounds of IVF. So, we are super pumped to have her back to share what she has found. As for increased risks of autism or ADHD after IVF? There's no proof that there is a direct correlation but you need to hear the details to understand the facts because there is more than meets the eye. Have you heard about the research that IVF babies have higher IQ? Find out if it's too good to be true .... we like the sound of this study when all 3 of us have IVF babies! EP 19: A Fertility Doctor's Fertility Story w/ Dr. Meivys Garcia
Dr. Meivys Garcia thought that she would become a doctor, get married, have kids and look after them .... and life would be that simple.  As a fertility doctor, she had NO idea she would become someone that needed fertility help, herself! In this episode she gets real and shares her truths including the shame she felt, how she kept her difficulties to herself and didn't feel she could share her fertility struggles with her co-workers, people who helped others with fertility issues. The truth is, no one is immune to challenges which includes infertility. Dr. Garcia embraced her struggles without shame and eventually opened up, got assistance and had 2 children, one at age 33 and one at 40. We are grateful that she is talking about this with us to help and hope that she inspires and empowers you as much as she did us.  Instagram: @drtanyawylde_nd @aliveholistichealthclinic @meetmarywong Please like, comment, share and give us ideas what content is resonating with you, or what you'd like to hear. EP 14: Valentine's Day gift - Mindfulness for fertility with Dr. Alda Ngo/Stephanie Curran
EP 14 Valentine's Day gift - Mindfulness for fertility with Dr. Alda Ngo/Stephanie Curran In anticipation of Valentine's Day, we wanted to do something special to add lightness to your day because we know that celebrations like this can be triggering and difficult (especially with a pandemic in the backdrop) when trying to start a family and suffering from subfertility. It may lead you down a slippery slope of non-stop thinking. But here's the thing, your thoughts are not reliable and often filled with all kinds of trash talk generating more worries and fears which you end up believing even though they are made up stories that aren't even true. So we brought in Dr. Alda Ngo and Stephanie Curran, both Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, who not only shared how mindfulness helped them on their own fertility journeys, but through their expertise, knowledge, and full hearts, gifted you an incredible 7 minute guided meditation.  Stephanie who had endometriosis and low ovarian reserve found mindfulness helped her connect back to herself and her husband. Dr. Alda who had unexplained infertility for 7 years and multiple miscarriages, got a positive pregnancy test the first day of a 10 day silent meditation retreat and anchored herself in the steadiness of her breath and watched the storm of her thoughts without judgment not getting swept away by sitting with them as she made peace with the unknown of the future. Mindfulness takes practice and gets easier the more you practice.  Research shows mindfulness can elevate your mood, flood your brain with happy mood molecules and improve your perception of your fertility journey and in doing so may help you persevere and shorten the time to get pregnant. We hope you love this podcast as much as we did!
