Canadian runner Hilary Spires hosts the Trail Running Women podcast. She interviews runners like herself and shares her own experiences.
Each podcast episode begins with a sound clip. Every guest talks about something unique to their running experience. Runner Priscilla Forgie mentions her specific goal. It's her mission to beat Courtney Dauwalter's 50-mile record. Hilary then introduces Priscilla by listing some of her accomplishments. The host also shares a bit about why Priscilla started running. Priscilla has an impressive record despite only having been a serious runner for a few years. In a different episode, Hilary talks to Jereny Rivera. Jereny is a road runner, not a trail runner. She discusses training in extreme Florida temperatures. Then, she details what it's like trying to make Olympic qualifying times.
Trail Running Women is about more than time goals and training regimens. Some guests explore the emotional and healing sides of running. For example, Annemarie Vander Waal is a young widow. She tells Hilary about managing grief while getting back to work and running. She explains how sharing her pain has been helpful. Annemarie offers some advice for people who know those who are grieving. Though it may feel uncomfortable, saying anything is more beneficial than saying nothing.
The conversations on Trail Running Women are personal and emotional. Many of them can be fun and lighthearted, too. In one episode, Hilary talks to Lululemon ambassador Scott Goodyear. He shares some less attractive details about his first longer race. He recalls a photograph of himself and his wife after the race where she looks lovely, and he looks unhappy. He threw up three minutes later.
On solo episodes of Trail Running Women, Hilary discusses her own training. In one, Hilary recaps the Tunnels Marathon she ran in Washington. She didn't make her goal time, but she had a fun weekend with family and friends. She reminds listeners that every race is an opportunity to learn, no matter one's finish time.
