Our Editor's Take

The future of human evolution has become a popular topic of discussion in recent years. Bret Weinstein | DarkHorse Podcast attempts to examine this topic through the prism of science. The reason for this has to do a lot with the backgrounds of the two hosts.

Dr. Bret Weinstein is an evolutionary biologist who earned a PhD in Biology from the University of Michigan. His cohost on the program is his wife, Dr. Heather Heying. Dr. Heying is also an evolutionary biologist. Her doctoral research focused on poisonous tree frogs from Madagascar. She has also been a professor of biology at Evergreen State University. While her name is not in the title of Bret Weinstein | DarkHorse Podcast, she is an equal to her husband.

Bret Weinstein | DarkHorse Podcast attempts to explore complicated scientific questions. A listener does not need a graduate degree to be able to follow along with the show. The two hosts use their backgrounds as science communicators. As such, they can discuss complex ideas in a way that is easy to understand. They also discuss current issues, like trans rights and vaccine mandates. And they relate them to evolutionary biology.

One of the interesting things of note about this podcast is how it relates to science. Despite their backgrounds, the hosts do not agree with the mainstream on a regular basis. They have very strong feelings about what is good and bad science. As such, they are not afraid to make statements that are sometimes controversial. Listeners may encounter points of view that are unfamiliar to them here. Bret Weinstein | DarkHorse Podcast premieres episodes two times a week.

Surgical Sophistry: The 216th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 216th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss the WPATH files—internal documents from the World Professional Association on Transgender Health—which were released this month. In them, we find evidence that clinicians are encouraging hormonal and surgical interventions on young people who are too young to consent, have not been informed of the risks, and often have comorbidities. We also discuss an article by a trans-identified man who argues “the moral case for letting trans kids change their bodies.” Finally: the milk of amphibians.*****Our sponsors:VanMan: Tallow and honey balm, and many other animal based personal care products. Contested Development: The 215th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 215th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss the CDC’s new super simple recommendations on respiratory viruses, and learn from the CDC that treatment can be prevention. While the CDC never mentions vitamin D in these new guidelines, a new meta-analysis finds that vitamin D supplementation is protective against bad Covid outcomes, especially in people who were previously deficient. We also discuss how podcasts are stepping in for institutions, sparking intellectual connections that the academy used to provide—all of this in the context of genocide and perpetrator studies. Also: strictly mechanistic explanations are standing in for evolutionary ones in many fields—including ophthalmology, dentistry, and psychology—to the detriment of all. And: the shared teeth of mammals and crocodiles.*****Our sponsors:MDHearing: To get our $397 when you buy a PAIR offer plus free charging case, head to shopmdhearing.com/DARKHORSE and use code DARKHORSE.ARMRA: Colostrum is our first food, and can help restore your health and resilience as an adult. Polite Society Can Kill You: The 214th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 214th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss polite society, RSV, and Google’s Gemini. Under what circumstances should we listen to, or defer to, the will of polite society? How can we tell if those conditions are changing? With regard to RSV (Respiratory Syncitial Virus), how deadly is it? To whom? What drugs—vaccinations and otherwise—are available, and to whom? While Politico mocks those who question the use of RSV vaccine in children, the New York Times points out there is no FDA authorized RSV vaccine for children. We also discuss the RSV vaccine that was authorized for children in the 1960s—and how it made subsequent illness far worse for those vaccinated. Finally: how does Google’s roll-out of Gemini AI reveal what is going on behind the scenes? A discussion of positive and negative feedback illustrates more broadly what Gemini reveals.*****Our sponsors:Freespoke: our new favorite search engine, which prioritizes privacy. How do models, collusion, and Occam’s Razor contribute to how we understand the world? Why are generalists better situated to interpret complexity than are specialists? Then: how good is the science behind the major paper out of The Lancet that assures us that we should not be eating red meat? Answer: not very. Trojan Migration? The 210th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 210th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss hypotheses about the border situation. Having just returned from Panama, Bret hypothesizes that there are two immigrations happening: the migration driven by the pursuit of greater economic opportunities in the United States, which includes people from all over the world, and a lot of families; and a second, cryptic migration which includes mostly people from China, of military age, heavily skewed towards men. He also reviews a hypothesis from some years back, about the effect of the one-child policy in China, taken in concert with the tendency to prefer boys. We then discuss neurogenesis in pregnant mice; and also the “diaper spa” being opened in New Hampshire, which is only possible because we have stopped allowing ourselves to critique anti-social and anti-societal tendencies.*****Our sponsors:Maui Nui Venison: healthiest wild red meat on the planet, from steaks to bone broth to jerky. Peril in The Main Stream: The 209th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 209th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss misinformation and how dangerous it is, especially to mainstream researchers and media. We dissect research that claims to find evidence that “doing your own research” actually cements false views, and find that the research itself is so methodologically flawed as to be incapable of delivering accurate results. We celebrate the finding of Canada’s Federal Court that the invoking of the Emergencies Act during the Trucker’s Convoy was unconstitutional; and we discuss the WHO’s faltering pandemic preparedness plan. In this 208th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss how not to hand Goliath a win. Letting Goliath in on the social landscape of the dissidents, on the petty feuds and disagreements, is giving it power that it should not have. And we discuss Boeing’s 737-9 Max airplanes: the one that blew out a door plug above Oregon; the FAA’s response to that “in-flight departure”; and recent changes at Boeing, which include increasing the focus on product and employee safety and product quality, to now also focus on climate, and on Diversity Equity and Inclusion). What do all mobs have in common? What are the differences between critique and competition? We also talk about fat: from butter to olive oil to canola oil, what should you fry in? Are saturated fats bad for you? What are the differences between mono- and poly- unsaturated fats? Does the food industry have it right about anything? #206: A Science-Like Substance (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)
In this 206th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss new year’s resolutions. The Oregon Health Authority has requested, using data kind of but not really from the CDC, that we resolve to get vaccinated! Then: a short reading from Natural Selections. And: What happened to Claudine Gay, the now-resigned president of Harvard, and why is anyone surprised? In light of the largest solar flare since 2017, which, had it been angled differently, could have wreaked havoc on Earth, why don’t we have systems in place to prevent such havoc? Are any of our institutions or systems functional? What is driving the lack of functionality?*****Our sponsors:Helix: Excellent, sleep-enhancing, American-made mattresses. #205: The World we Leave (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)
In this 205th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we briefly discuss solar storms, Carrington events, and the possible failure of the electrical grid. Then: what does the absence of organisms where they once were mean? In the Exumas, Bahamas, this month, there were no laughing gulls. Eight months ago they were abundant in the same place. Could they be migrating? Might it be a pathogen? Local patchiness? Major decline for other reasons, like competition, or toxicity from plastics or pesticides? We discuss conservation success stories, like sea otters and bald eagles and California condors; and failures, like sea stars on the West coast of North America; and show some videos from the Bahamas. We object to the conflation of “environmental decline” with “climate change.” And we discuss curly haired “woolly dogs” of the Pacific Northwest, who were bred and cared for by the Coast Salish people, but are now extinct.*****Our sponsors:Mindbloom: at-home ketamine therapy. In this 204th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss science and faith, in the context of the recent court ruling that will keep Trump off the ballot in Colorado. We discuss failure modes, which include, yes, faith, and science, and falsificationism, and rationality, and more. All of these are useful in some contexts, some much more than others, but none are sufficient. What, in the end, are scientists doing, and what are people doing in the name of science? Also: the solstice, and a reading from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.*****Our sponsors:American Hartford Gold: Get up to $5,000 of free silver on your first qualifying order. #203 Cause of Death (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)
In this 203rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode we once again discuss college presidents, in light of what is happening at Harvard and other elite schools. We talk about historical and bureaucratic constraint, Evergreen, consulting firms, and plagiarism, and, in a related story, how someone acting on behalf of the Mayor of Boston mistakenly invited all 13 city councilors to a holiday party, when she meant to invite only the 6 who are “electeds of color.” Then: what do morbid curiosity and predator inspection have in common? People seem to be dying at high rates, and in new contexts, but is this actually the case? How would we know? What do the global excess mortality data suggest? Then: rules to live by, as acknowledged by us at Hanukkah.*****Our sponsors:Vivo Barefoot: Shoes for healthy feet—comfortable and regenerative, enhances stability and tactile feedback. In this 202nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode we discuss the Congressional hearing in which the presidents of several elite universities are asked whether calling for the genocide of Jews constitute bullying or harassment. We call out the double standard revealed by their actions, and their answers. Then we discuss the impressive efforts by Pfizer to engage the behemoth that is Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
