THE GRIT SHOW - Growth on Purpose

Shawna Rodrigues

This is a community for the givers and the doers. We have the grit, we’ve powered through, and now we are ready for the other side. Now we are ready for the conversations that remind us about self-care, a dialogue that brings us back to purpose, and helps us find more room to breathe and live life with a little more ease. We want to discover tools and ways of thinking that support alignment, build stronger connections, help us find better questions, and live our best life. Most weeks we laugh, some weeks the topics touch close to home and there is a tear in our eye, but ultimately; this is where we grow together as seekers and thrivers. www.TheGritShow.com

Is there something that you want in your life? Something that you wish you had room for? Health & Aging for Women from Gut Health to Hormones w/Dr. Robin Miller -20
As we age, it's hard to think of it as just a number. Many women feel less valued and a little invisible. Dr. Robin Miller heard this from her patients and wrote the book “Invisible or Invincible: Your Choice” in response. She wants to empower women to take control of their health and aging and be seen. From hormones to gut health (yes, all comes down to poop) to integrating exercise and joy, we touch on a lot of relevant topics. Dr. Robin Miller, an established author (The Smart Woman’s Guide to Midlife and Beyond, Kids Ask the Doctor, and Healed: Health and Wellness for the 21st Century), gave us an exciting advanced glimpse at her latest book, “Invisible or Invincible: Your Choice”. She has gathered the knowledge, insights and information offered in this book over the course of 33 years of treating patients using the principles of integrative medicine and personal experience. Board-certified in Internal Medicine, she trained with Andrew Weil as an Integrative Medicine Fellow at University of Arizona. She is currently Medical Director of Triune Integrative Medicine, a highly innovative, consultative integrative medicine company in Medford, Oregon. She serves as an Executive Advisory Board member for Sharecare, an interactive health and wellness website founded in conjunction with Oprah and Jeff Arnold (Creator of WebMD). Robin is also a medical reporter and a regular correspondent for KOBI-TV NBC5.She writes a regular column for the Grants Pass Courier and can be heard on Jefferson Public Radio on her show, Doctor to Doctor. She lives in southern Oregon with her husband and in her free time when she isn’t dancing, she tends to the vineyard they own together known as Peter William Vineyard. In this episode, Robin talks to us about the importance of gut health in overall health and immunity, the impact of a good diet, and the importance of exercise. Reflect, Learn, Grow; Shifts in Purpose and the Importance of Connection w/Billy Lahr -19
Do you know what it feels like to be living in your purpose? Sometimes how you express your purpose in life can shift, especially as you age. Our guest today talked about feeling burnt out and feeling unappreciated in a career that met his definition of purpose and his way of adding value for years. So what happens when it is time to shift? You can hear the excitement and energy in his voice when he explains he started his podcast because he, “…wanted to create a platform that gave space to people who wanted to share their expertise and their life experiences in order to help people navigate the complexities and possibilities of life's second half.” We also touch on the challenges of talking about Mental Health for men, the importance of social connection and much more. Our guest, Billy Lahr, had a lot to share. He is the host of The Mindful Midlife Crisis, a podcast for people navigating the complexities and possibilities of life’s second half. Billy spent 21 years as an educator, noting a lack of job satisfaction and budding mental health concerns during the last half of his career. In 2021, Billy left his job as dean of students to travel the world in search of more meaningful life experiences. While in Korea, Billy’s path in life became crystal clear to him, and as a result, he co-created Reflect. Learn. Grow. to help others develop an awareness of thoughts and behaviors through self-reflection to cultivate a more purpose-filled life. During this episode, we will learn more about the Reflect. Learn. Grow. program, and some of what led Billy to start this program and his project. We also touch on the Five Love Languages, and much more. Looking for Purpose? First Find Stillness w/Parm Saggu -16
Are you someone who feels a little lost, stuck, or alone in life? I am sure we have all had days and times where we have been in that place. That was where today’s guest was out when she found her own way to purpose and discovered her way of giving back to the world in a way that resonates with her.  The strongest message I walked away from after today's interview was the importance of leading your day and your life by taking care of yourself. We talk about self care a good amount on this podcast, but its amazing how much we still need that reminder! It is the most important ingredient in finding our path and I enjoyed speaking with Parm about this and the journey she took as she sought out alignment. She taught us a little about why the practice of yoga is unique in how it can integrate changes into your life and how it continued to call to her until she heeded that call. Parm Saggu is a spiritual life coach for millennials seeking purpose and the owner and founder of Parm’s Yoga.  A few years ago, she worked as a nanotechnology engineer and surrendered all of that to the intense pull she felt to make a bigger impact on the world. Her journey took her from feeling lost, stuck and alone in life to finding her purpose. Now, Parm helps unfulfilled professionals find purpose, inner peace and get out of the dark place they’re in.Website: ResourcesFree 30 Minute Breath work, Yoga and Meditation Class:   We’d love to connect - The Grit Show - Instagram - Facebook - or www.TheGritShow.com Ready to snag your free Self-Care Sparking Coloring Pages and join our mailing list?   Start your self-care journey with The Color of Grit Adult Coloring Book: Vintage Mermaid & Magnificent Ocean love to hear from you! Love Languages & Alignment in Relationships w/Bethany Ann -13

Love Languages & Alignment in Relationships w/Bethany Ann -13
Today our focus is alignment in relationships, which quickly led to one of my favorite topics, the five love languages. I’ve always felt they were a valuable tool since I first discovered them fresh out of college. They do a lot to help you understand what you need so that your keep feels full and to understand that others around may need different things so that they can feel loved. We mostly speak about it in romantic relationships but touch on other applications and once you dive into this concept, there are many places that you can apply it as well.Bethany is our guest leading us in this conversation and she also talks about shared vision in relationships and understanding where you and your partner see yourselves and making sure you are on the same page. Throughout this conversation, you’ll see glimpses of the years I spent years being a bit of a skeptic of the immense beauty and benefit having the right relationship can bring to your life. I am very blessed and grateful for the relationship I have and Bethany and I both talk a little about how limiting beliefs is the biggest thing that kept me and many others from having relationships that give so much back to their life and wellbeing.  Bethany Ann is a love and relationship coach who specializes in helping divorced women find love again. She empowers them to attract divine, aligned love into their lives without the chase of dating apps. She works with them to rewire self-limiting beliefs and restore self-confidence and trust. Having been on her own spiritual journey for the past 5 years, Bethany understands what it takes to move from a place of fear and lack into a place of love and light. With over 10 years in the medical field, Bethany took her love of serving and helping others into a different space. Coaching was a natural fit for her, as her friends and family constantly turned to her for advice. You can often find her with her nose in a book, on the beach, or spending time with her family.Bethany’s Divorced Moms Date without Apps FB Group: with Bethany on IG:  Things we referenced in the show:The 5 Love Languages Quiz: 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts  I have not read these editions, but have been curious about them. Defining our Words and our Path w/Belle Lockerby -12

Defining our Words and our Path w/Belle Lockerby -12
Words. We use them every single day. We use some of them to define ourselves, perhaps reflexively. How often do we question those definitions? Do we know where they’ve come from? Why we choose them, who gave them to us? How often do we let those definitions grow and change? How often do they still fit where we are and who we are today? Do we check in with those nearest and dearest to us to see how they define some of these words, to see if our definitions are the same?  All of this is a large part of our conversation with guest Belle Lockerby, author of The Words the Caterpillar Ate currently available for presale. Belle Lockerby is a speaker, best selling author and founder of rise365 where she designed and delivered change programs for women that rebuilt their confidence and generated multiple 7 figures.  Holding a Post Grad in Change Management and as Australia's first Certified Clifton Strengthsfinder coach she is, primarily, a transformation expert.   Belle helps women find their self worth in their words so they can have hard conversations with ease and speak confidently (including with that voice inside their own heads that holds them back).  Having coached over 1000 humans and worked with small and large organizations, Belle has seen the positive impact that comes from people unlocking their innate talents to rebuild self belief and communicate effectively.  She knows words we speak to ourselves and each other are the key for confidently building value - in business and life.  In addition to a focus on mothers and women in leadership, Belle’s corporate list of clients includes Rio Tinto, City of Mandurah, Department of Fire and Emergency and Johnson & Johnson Medical. She has a lot of wisdom to offer, but this is also an episode filled with laughter, vulnerability, and stories from life. Decision Making–Getting Past Overthinking and Overwhelm w/Kirsten Parker -11
Decision making. It’s something we do every single day, multiple times a day. I’m sure we’ve all seen that sometimes, it can be overwhelming, even debilitating; no matter how much we are keeping it together in other areas, sometimes we get tripped up. Fortunately, Kirsten Parker realized this was a common theme she saw with the people she was coaching and it became something she has specialized in. Our conversation touches on her journey to look at the hard questions and make the decisions that led her into her current role, as well as a story from her clients, and talking about how this applies to you. If you are someone who can get overwhelmed and overthink, who has a hard time sticking to the decisions you’ve made, or just likes to laugh along with an intriguing conversation—this episode is for you. We’ll talk a bit about purpose too, because The Grit Show has found that purpose is a topic that resonates with our community.Kirsten helps overthinkers trust their choices. She spent years moving her life & career forward, Yale Masters Degree in tow, feeling way more angst than certainty! Despite "success and smarts," she second-guessed big AND small decisions, over-valued others' opinions & usually catastrophized about what could go wrong. Coaching allowed her to finally feel calm, clear & confident – so she could feel present in her life – and that's exactly what she helps clients do now. TT To Do Lists- Friend or Foe? -08
Do you get overwhelmed by a seemingly endless to do list?I sure do. It has taken me awhile to develop strategies to manage this, and after being sent in a spiral this past week by trying to follow a well-intended suggestion to start digitizing my endless list of things to accomplish, take care of, and address... (which resulted in wasting half of my day and losing all focus) I drilled down and remembered the brass tacks of what actually works for me. After chatting with a friend or two, I thought you may find value in hearing it too. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I upload the transcript to Buzzsprout, but don't have that all archived on my website just yet. If you are having any trouble accessing the transcript and it would be valuable to have the steps or questions in the show notes - send me a DM on Instagram, I'll be more than happy to get them over to you. TT Cherry Blossoms, Epigenetics, & the Legacy of Trauma -06
Welcome to Thursday Thoughts on The Grit Show. This week, we are chatting about something you would see as innocuous under most circumstances: cherry blossoms. However, the science of epigenetics and the inheritable intergenerational effects of trauma are quite intriguing and may have you looking at these lovely markers of spring in a whole new way. Epigenetics is something Shawna has long been interested in and although this field is young, and full of room for debate, Shawna feels there are a lot of interesting facts and things we can learn from it. Her takeaways may not be the ones that are discussed in the mainstream, but will definitely give you some food for thought. She touches on a couple of studies that are referenced below, but will also talk about the lenses that this research can give us as we move through our days and interact with those around us. If you have thoughts on this, we would love to hear them. Naked Truth about Divorce, Purpose, and Self-Care w/ Stacie McCoy -05
Stacie McCoy is a compassionate divorce and co-parenting life coach with over 25 years of professional family support experience—and a pretty interesting divorce and co-parenting story of her own. She joined The Grit Show today to share her stories and truth and some of the work she does to help women deepen their relationship with themselves and be more intentional about living the next chapter of their life. The conversation touched on the gravity of having your life and purpose shaken by monumental shifts like divorce and the importance of self-care. Stacie gave us the naked truth of what things feel like in the depths of divorce, even when things look like photo-shopped perfection to the outside world. The incidence of divorce is on the decline in the US, but we all know someone who is experiencing or has experienced it, and this episode is a valuable reminder of the many layers of impact. For individuals going through divorce, especially those with kids, her challenges and experience will resonate. Walking away with some of her favorite self-care snacks and the importance of fitting them in-regardless of dosage- will be beneficial for us all.  Stacie McCoy has supported parent journeys towards self-sufficiency as well as spending time in DC, advocating for families and employees, among many other leadership roles, supporting children, families, mental health, and nonprofits. Following some soul searching after a health scare, Stacie left the non-profit world and is now on her own doing what she loves most: helping women to heal and fall back in love with their life after divorce—without messing up the kids. She is on a mission to help others filter out the pain, bitterness, and regret of divorce by walking them back to their heart’s wisdom. Stacie lives in Rollinsford, New Hampshire, with her two amazing children and her 2 pudgy guinea pigs. Stacie is currently available for 1:1 private coaching sessions and for group coaching via her new 6-week group coaching program, The Divorce DIstillery. This program is designed to give clients the tools and support to help them move through divorce and co-parenting with deeper clarity, ease, compassion, and with a new sense of resiliency and purpose. Most importantly, it's designed to help clients fall back in love with life after divorce--and to become their own best partner. The one they truly deserve.Visit her website to book a call or to learn more!www.staciemccoy.com   Book your Epiphany Call: She would love it if you come hang out with her on Instagram and Facebook as she spends a lot of time with her audience there.
