Did I Do That?: Making Graphic Design & Mistakes

Sean Schumacher

“Did I Do That?” is a podcast about graphic designers—the ups and down they face in creative practice, because making design means making lots (and lots) mistakes. Every other Thursday, host Sean Schumacher (Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University) is joined by a guest from the world of design with a special story about their own mistakes starting out and how they ended up where they did. It’s very weird, pretty silly, and definitely not serious—but neither are designers.

A Michael Bay Film in App Form (with Jordan Rosenblum) [Rerun]

A Michael Bay Film in App Form (with Jordan Rosenblum) [Rerun]
Jordan Rosenblum (visual designer/educator/socially engaged artist) joins Sean to talk blobby blue friends, a whole lot of chrome, and The Egg Space. Sean, meanwhile, spends a solid five minutes talking about a plastic skeleton in an apron at a business he never goes to! It’s the episode that finally diagrams it out for everybody who’s been dying to know: culture is where the RAM slot is and psycholinguistics is the foot.Learn more about Jordan’s work at https://jordanrosenblum.com! This episode originally "aired" on January 27, 2022.This is the second of our summer reruns, but don’t worry! Sean is venturing out into the world to record a few new guests in parts unknown, and new episodes will return August 25. Until then, though, we’ll be taking a cue from summer prime-time TV and pivoting to reruns of “old” favorites—as the extraordinarily lazy 1998 ad campaign for NBC’s summer reruns once put it, “if you haven’t seen it, it’s new to you!” If you’re hoping to get a friend into the show, though, maybe now’s a great time?Follow the show on some of the things via our website, dididothat.design! You can also find the show’s Patreon there, should you find yourself in a Brewster’s Millions type scenario where you need to get rid of money fast and any old thing will do (or, you know, if you just like this thing and want to help support its production). Either way is fine by me!If you enjoyed this episode and want to support the show, help spread the word! Five-star reviews are always welcome, as are written reviews if you need something to keep your idle hands at bay. Don’t want to deal with the hassle of stars or keys? Telling a friend IRL is a great way to avoid both, and helps the show plenty!Got a story to share? If you’re a graphic designer or know one who might have a story that would be a good fit for this show, reach out! Sean is booking out guests for this summer hiatus and would love to have you on board, especially if you're in the Seattle or Vancouver BC areas. Email hi@seanschumacher.com if you’re interested! Originally aired December 30, 2021Taryn Cowart (now a creative director on the brand studio team at GitHub, previously of Instrument) joins Sean to talk about wedding ghosts, the Great D̵i̵s̵m̵a̵l̵ Swamp, and sheet cake shenanigans. We're layin’ eggs and droppin’ bombs in the episode that the former editors of the Coraddi call “a cesspool of commies and queers.”Follow Taryn at @taryncowart on all the things, or check out her website at taryncowart.com.This is the first of our summer reruns, but don’t worry! Gundam Style (with Nic Adenau)
It’s the season one finale of Did I Do That? and we are not throwing away our shot on this one! Meme curator and design leader Nic Adenau (AKA Nic A of TikTok’s Lofi Art School) joins Sean to talk Sha Na Na, Jackass’ leadership lessons, and the sketchiest way to send a $30,000 chain when it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight. You can find Nic on TikTok @lofiartschool! You can also find Lofi Art School on the web, with links to some other services if you prefer! This is the first season’s finale, but don’t worry! We’re not going anywhere—at least in one sense!
