Losing Maroon5 - with Ryan Dusick

Losing Maroon5 - with Ryan Dusick
Join Crystal as she interviews Ryan Dusick the founding drummer of Maroon 5. Crystal and Ryan both grew up in the Los Angeles area. Although Ryan was becoming a famous drummer and Crystal was becoming a mother BOTH stories involve an addiction to Alcohol. They both are on a recovery journey and believe that recovering out loud can spread the awareness that Sobriety IS Possible. About Ryan's new book: Two decades after Songs About Jane, Maroon 5’s original drummer presents an unflinching examination of fame, anxiety, mental health, and recovery. In the nineties, Ryan Dusick and his friends Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael dreamed about making it big . . . and against all odds, they did. This inside story recounts Maroon 5’s founding and their road to becoming Grammy-winning megastars, told through the eyes of former drummer Ryan Dusick. He takes readers behind the scenes of the band’s meteoric rise to success—and the grueling demands that came with it—as well as his personal struggles with anxiety and addiction after his departure from the band. For Maroon 5, fame came with a platinum debut record, jam sessions with Prince in his own living room, and encounters with celebrities such as Jessica Simpson, Justin Timberlake, John Mayer, and Bono. For Dusick, stardom came to an abrupt halt with the devastating loss of his ability to play drums due to chronic nerve damage. Alongside Maroon 5’s story of camaraderie and pressure, Dusick interweaves his own narrative: a decade lost to liquor and anti-anxiety medication, his ferocious commitment to recovery, and his current perspective as a professional counselor. With a candor that will speak to anyone who has struggled with mental health, Harder to Breathe moves beyond celebrity to examine the nature of human heartbreak and resilience, and to buoy anyone currently facing similar challenges.Ultimately, Harder to Breathe is a roller-coaster memoir about how making it to the top sent Dusick to the bottom—and how he let go of the past and embraced a new future, one breath at a time.Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/8BQv8cINC6MAre you enjoying the Sober Onions Podcast? If so, your Donation or Sponsorship will help continue on the message of sobriety. All funds go to Podcast website, editing fees, hosting fees and media expenses.https://soberonions.com/sponsors-patrons/Your donation can change the lives of those struggling with addiction or those trying to maintain Sobriety. We are a community that grows by sharing and supporting each other.Thank you for your Support~ CrystalFOLLOW on IG: sober.onionsFacebook: Sober OnionsListen on Spotify & Apple ITuneshttps://soberonions.com/https://www.buymeacoffee.com/SoberonionsMaking the Change Sobriety Journal & Activity Book (Discount Code STAYSOBER)https://makingthechange.store/No Commercials, Real Talk and Real Stories. The two have some WILD stories for you!  Do you ever get nervous that your Sobriety will be challenged if you move to a different town?   I know I was nervous. I met August at a meeting and immediately I knew we were going to be friends! She is funny, outgoing and has a miracle story.  We had so much in common and I was also curious how she had been maintaining her sobriety with such a giant past. Our past is only our last direction, not our final direction. August is so fun. She is a God fearing mother of two just like me! We even go to the same church on Sundays! Let me tell you about August: August is three years sober and a mother of two boys. She has overcome her addiction with Alcohol and now devotes her time with her boys, service in the recovery community and giving back to women who have been or are going through Domestic Violence victims. She works as an Independent Photographer. You can find more information about her on her website https://www.fig-ranch.com/You can be inspired by her story because it begins with pain, violence, abandonment and trauma. I'm Sober .. So Now What? - Melissa Gissy Witherspoon
Join Crystal as she interviews Melissa. Melissa emailed her about her new book  I'm Sober ... Now What? .. and immediately Crystal was intrigued. I mean who doesn't ask that question when they get sober!!  After they met, immediately they had questions for each other and Crystal had to interview her on the Podcast! They had so much in common and share so many similar experiences about addiction and recovery. A little about Melissa- After more than two decades of substance abuse, multiple failed attempts at sobriety, numerous arrests, a revolving door of treatment facilities, and a rock bottom that resulted in near death on her basement floor, Melissa has finally achieved long-term sobriety and is eager to share with the world that addicts do recover!  Life after drinking is possible. She is originally from a suburb north of Atlanta, Georgia, resides in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where she is raising her two youngest of four children with her husband, Derek.  Her second chance at being a present mother leaves her in a dialectical dance of gratitude and exhaustion but she wouldn’t want it any other way.She currently works as an administrative assistant at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons North Carolina. That’s right – even after all her self will run riot and messy decision making throughout her life, thanks to drinking vodka like its water and popping pills like they were breath mints, God brought her home and keeps her in His house where she can be of service to those in need. She is an active member in the AA community, where she spends time as a guest speaker sharing her message of hope to those that are looking for a new way of life. She is a board member of Joseph-Mary Foundation, where she raises money for education and medical supplies for families in Cameroon, Africa. Her passion for reaching across the continents to those in need fuels her vision to not only lend a hand to her neighbor but help educate others about addiction through sharing her personal story. With almost a decade in sobriety, Melissa is following her calling to love and support those whose lives have been impacted by addiction. She believes her divine intervention was meant to not only spare her own life, but to also be used as a conduit to connect the lost and broken with a higher power whom she knows as God.“I have been called to love those, who may not love me back, for this is unconditional love and what we have been instructed to do above all other commandments-to love one another”-Melissa Gissy Witherspoon You can find Melissa @ Sobriety Addiction Healing Spiritual Journey - Sober-NowYou Can Watch on YOUTUBE:Making the Change Sobriety Journal & Activity Book (Discount Code STAYSOBER)https://makingthechange.store/Are you enjoying the Sober Onions Podcast? If so, your Donation or Sponsorship will help continue on the message of sobriety. All funds go to Podcast website, editing fees, hosting fees and media expenses.https://soberonions.com/sponsors-patrons/Your donation can change the lives of those struggling with addiction or those trying to maintain Sobriety. We are a community that grows by sharing and supporting each other.Thank you for your Support~ CrystalFOLLOW on IG: sober.onionsFacebook: Sober OnionsTik Tok: Sober OnionsListen on Spotify & Apple ITuneshttps://soberonions.com/No Commercials, Real Talk and Real Stories. Family Addiction with Jennifer Fox DRAGONOLIA

Family Addiction with Jennifer Fox DRAGONOLIA
Join Crystal as she interviews Jennifer Fox from Dragonoilia! Crystal and Jen talk about loss of family members to addiction, Sober Curious Movement, Learning how to live life sober and setting goals for yourself that change your life! About Jennifer: After miscarrying twice in 2015, losing her mom to lung cancer in 2016 and separating from her abusive husband in 2017 Jennifer Fox headed into 2018 knowing she needed to file for divorce, start over and create a happier life. But 2018 had something different in mind. After having a full hysterectomy in October and finalizing her divorce in November, she was sure 2019 would be better. And then she lost her baby brother Justin to a heroin overdose on December 5th, just 6 days after becoming legally divorced at 45 years old.In 2019 Jennifer found herself in a rapid downward spiral to nowhere, drinking at least one bottle of wine a day, sometimes two, and sometimes topping that off with a "nightcap". By the fall she was quite literally drowning in grief over the loss of her brother, drinking like a raging alcoholic and had also put on 40 pounds. So she made a pact with herself. Instead of doing her annual Dry January, she was going to give up drinking for an entire year. In addition, she was going to become a runner, something she had dreamt of for many, many years, because runners embodied everything she wanted to be: dedicated, disciplined, fit and able to tackle hard things. To do this she committed to run one 5K every month until she could run the 3.1 miles without stopping to walk and feeling like she might die, her first being the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, 2019.  2020 started off awesome, with the 3 day personal development conference for women created by Rachel Hollis, and at least 6 months of races on the calendar. By the time the global pandemic hit she was down 20 pounds, betting better at running each week and feeling incredibly strong in her sobriety. Though most people will find this hard to believe, Jennifer firmly states that despite COVID and the million dollar loss in her business because of it, 2020 was the best year of her adult life. Why? Tune in to hear her incredible story of loss, resilience, courage and authenticity, along with where her relationship is with alcohol today. You can find Jennifer on IG and online https://www.dragonolia.com/You Can Watch on YOUTUBE:Making the Change Sobriety Journal & Activity Book (Discount Code STAYSOBER)https://makingthechange.store/Are you enjoying the Sober Onions Podcast? Staying Together after Loss of Child, Addiction Abuse and Military Treatment- John Quillan
Join Crystal as she interviews Chief John Quillin about losing his child, alcohol abuse and recovery in the military.About John:Chief John Quillin, USN, MPA tragically lost their daughter in 2012 and thatlead to his abuse and then dependence on alcohol. John has been sober since Oct 19 of 2012. It was a dangerous time in his life, and he was able to go through a Navy outpatienttreatment plan that was 21 days. In this program he learned so much about himself and why he was drinking so much. The pain and hurt only went away when he was drinking. He received treatment and his family stayed right by his side.He is married to his amazing wife of 16 years, Dr. Mandy Quillin. They live inChesapeake, VA with their 2 boys, Landon (15), Jack (12), and their golden doodle, Rosie. They also have a parrot and a turtle, so the house feels a bit like a zoo sometimes. John is a California native and his wife grew up in Kentucky, which is where they met. He is a huge USC fan (Fight on!) and his wife loves cheering for her Kentucky wildcats. Luckily, their two teams don’t play one another often, but when they do it gets fun! Their kids cheer for both to keep mom and dad happy. Before settling in Chesapeake, they spent 3 years in Sigonella, Sicily, which is where our oldest was born.Landon is a sophomore at Great Bridge High, where he stays busy with his honors andAP classes. Right now he wants to be an Occupational Therapist, but we will see if his mindchanges again between now and college. He isn’t their “sports kid” but loves riding horses.Jack is in 7th grade at Great Bridge Middle, loves playing soccer, and hopes to work inpediatric mental health someday. For the last few years, him and his wife have both been focusing on our education, with Mandy earning her Doctorate of Health Science in May and me finishing my Masters of Public Administration in August. When their kids transitioned to virtual learning last year, all four of us were trying to attend school from home, which was interesting to say the least! Mandy works at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she runs the Experiential Learning department, which means she makes sure all of the medical and health professions students are prepared and ready for their clinical rotations. She also teaches courses for EVMSand Liberty University Online. They all love what we do and in our own ways are dedicated tochanging culture to a culture of excellence.WATCH ON YOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5L40ZsyyDYYou can find John on his website and social media platformshttps://www.thegoodenoughdad.orgAre you enjoying the Sober Onions Podcast?  If so, your Donation or Sponsorship will help continue on the message of sobriety. All funds go to Podcast website, editing fees, hosting fees and media expenses.https://soberonions.com/sponsors-patrons/ Your donation can change the lives of those struggling with addiction or those trying to maintain Sobriety. Partying TOO Hard- Guest Curtis (Canada) THE SOBER APP
First Season 2 Episode! 2022Crystal now 8 months sober discusses with Curtis heavy partying, confessions of an addict, his Sober Bike Ride and more!Let me tell you about Curtis!Curtis Wasylow was born just outside Vancouver, BC, Canada. Youngest of four siblings and two amazing parents, he had a pretty good upbringing. He was driven, motivated and in most people's eyes... a success. He spent his 20's managing businesses and owning several of his own, from gyms to restaurants. Curtis was educated, outgoing, always smiling and never hesitated to laugh with anyone. He realized that because he starting drinking at 13 and getting into trouble with the law by 25, he not only had financial destruction but serious mental health issues. His Anxiety and Stress were going "through the roof". With all the consequences of getting into a car accident, breaking his femur and almost killing himself and others, he realized it was time to end this season of life and GET Sober. On May 23rd, 2021 Curtis Wasylow admitted to the world he had a drug and alcohol problem. For nearly 5 years, alcohol and drugs had gone from a fun party substance to self destruction. It was something to escape reality and get out of his own head...so he thought. He then started to realized how far behind he was in life and all the mistakes and failures were slowing him down. He was his own worst enemy and the drug and alcohol use was the only thing that made him feel normal...so he thought. He was on the brink of losing it all and near death and at that point. That is when his sobriety journey began. At 3 months sober, Curtis needed something more than just recovery... he needed a challenge! He bought a bike and left from Vancouver and rode his bike on the Pacific Coast Highway. He wasn’t sure where he'd end up, but pedal to the metal, he found himself. He created a SOBER BIKE RIDE Instagram handle and it blew up with followers!  This encouraged him to keep on riding the Sobriety Journey. He is now 7 months sober and happier than he ever remembers being. Curtis is days away from launching a NEW sobriety app (THE SOBER APP) in hopes that he will help those who are sober curious or needing to get sober. Follow his Journey and he continues to Ride Through Recovery!IG the.sober.nomad and thesober.appThe Sober Onions Podcast will be apart and featured on THE SOBER APP.Watch on You Tubehttps://youtu.be/PgvBemfkQ8wMentions/Shout outs in the Podcast CLEN Apparell https://clenapparel.comRecovery Nuggets Podcast https://www.recoverynuggetspodcast.comAre you enjoying the Sober Onions Podcast?  If so, your Donation or Sponsorship will help continue on the message of sobriety. All funds go to Podcast website, editing fees, hosting fees and media expenses.https://soberonions.com/sponsors-patrons/ Your donation can change the lives of those struggling with addiction or those trying to maintain Sobriety. Mom's with Mental Health, Trauma and Addition Recover! Shay from Utah
Join Crystal as she interviews Shay from Utah!Shay is a wife and Mother of two young girls. Shay is an alcoholic in recovery after a 16 year love/hate relationship with booze. Shay grew up in Utah with a Mormon family and family drinkers. Their Moto was "do as I say, not as I do."  Shay unfortunately, battled depression, sexual trauma, religious trauma and was suicidal.  After a 10 year battle with alcohol and a deep reaching out letter from her little sister, Shay entered into a 90 day in-patient rehabilitation.  After, she was able to maintain her sobriety for 2 years. With the idea of really feeling like she could finally control her drinking, she was back at it again.  In 2019, her suicidal thoughts and mental deterioration led her to a mental institution.  At that point she had to ask her self, "Are you being Real with Yourself?".  May 6th 2020 she decided she was going to put her daughters and husband, mostly Herself and start her final Sober Journey. Today She uses her experience to help others see that the decision to live alcohol free, while not always easy, is possible and that it can be absolutely worth it.She shares inspirational and real life knowledge on her  Instagram & Facebook pages @Shaysober After Interviewing Shay, I am amazed how the struggle we all face come in different forms, but we all wish and hope for one thing, Sobriety.WATCH ON YOUTUBE https://youtu.be/CmEWflyZpRQAre you enjoying the Sober Onions Podcast? The POWER of Recovery~ Guest Alika
Join Crystal as she interviews Alika the creator of Pro Recovery POWER!  Alika Gambill, identifies as a sober drug addict and alcoholic today. Through his Addiction birthed his purpose and he believes Addiction to be a disease, an illness that affects us like no other human sickness can. God took what was meant for his harm and he turned it into good. This disease forged a great weapon against itself when he tried to take my life and failed. Today he is a husband and a father. His wife and son are a direct result of getting clean and sober back in 2017. Since then he has developed a very high fervor, an intense passion for recovery and helping those who have been afflicted by the disease of addiction. He can see how all his pain and suffering can benefit someone else. He was told that in life we will go through two different pains, the pain of change of the pain of staying the same. He is sober today because someone sober helped him and the best way to pay it back is to pay it forward. He is the founder of Pro Recovery Power, a nonprofit organization committed to helping those who struggle with addiction. He will go and live with other attics and/or other alcoholics, people who are sober, people in recovery, people who have gone through treatment and so on. He started making Recovery clothing, a website, YouTube page, host recovery meetings through zoom, and also doing panels in his area locally.Through his formal schooling he obtained a degree in substance abuse disorder counseling. He has  a business called Abundant Recovery and I am a sober mentor. Some of the solutions he implements into his mentorship program are, learning to live life free from addiction, coping skills to get through loss, the ability to sustain long-term sobriety, reprogramming your mind body and spirit, and finding your identity passion and purpose in life. He is a guide in the literal sense, his clients never feel like they’re free will is threatened. He always reminds  them “ I am not here to change you, I’m here to support you through change”, His experience has been this: guiding people verses telling them what to do is much more effective.Watch on You Tube https://youtu.be/Ch3A7ibLT8EYou can find Alika on Instagram @pro_recovery_powerand at https://prorecoverypower.comAre you enjoying the Sober Onions Podcast?
