The Crop with a Million Enemies
In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak dives deep into the world of flue-cured tobacco production with a true expert in the field, Dr. J Michael Moore, of the University of Georgia Tobacco Team. J Michael has dedicated his career to developing and implementing educational programs that guide farmers in producing high-quality tobacco. He collaborates closely with county Extension agents, researchers, and various agribusiness groups to deliver research-based recommendations, ensuring that Georgia farmers have the most up-to-date information at their fingertips. He coordinates a team of specialists, providing crucial knowledge on everything from production and harvesting to curing and marketing tobacco. He's the driving force behind the University of Georgia Tobacco Team and the visionary leader of the Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour, which showcases the latest advancements in tobacco farming. The Southeastern United States has a rich history rooted in agriculture, with tobacco playing a pivotal role in the region's economic and cultural landscape. The industry, particularly flue-cured tobacco, has seen significant advancements through the years, driven by dedicated professionals and innovative research. Flue-cured tobacco, primarily grown in Georgia and Florida, is known for its high quality and distinct curing process. The leaves are harvested and then cured using heat in a controlled environment, which helps develop the tobacco's characteristic flavor and aroma. This type of tobacco is commonly used in cigarette production, making it a crucial crop for the region's farmers.Dr. Moore's role involves developing and implementing educational programs focused on producing and managing flue-cured tobacco. By working closely with county Extension agents, researchers, and agribusiness groups, Dr. Moore ensures that farmers receive sound, research-based recommendations. These recommendations cover various aspects of tobacco production, from planting and growing to harvesting and curing. The Georgia-Florida Tobacco TourOne of the most notable initiatives led by Dr. Moore is the annual Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour. This event showcases the latest research and advancements in tobacco farming, offering growers a firsthand look at new varieties and cultivation techniques. The 2024 tour includes multiple demonstration locations featuring thirteen released varieties grown in Georgia and Florida, as well as research test locations evaluating eleven varieties for black shank resistance. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see the evaluation of a new Orondis premix formulation, applied in transplant water for black shank control and phytotoxicity.Throughout the growing season, farmers must manage pests and diseases, which can significantly impact yield and quality. Regular monitoring and the use of recommended agricultural practices help mitigate these risks. As the plants mature, the leaves are harvested in stages, starting from the bottom and moving upwards. The tobacco growing industry in the Southeast continues to Send us a Text Message. We facilitate the investment process between businesses and investors. How Will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?
This week's North American Ag Spotlight is a little different, last week I attended the 2024 American Agri-women Fly-In in Washington DC. Among the many speakers we heard there was one extraordinarily excellent presentation by University of Delaware Professor Emeritus David R. Legates, Ph.D., C.C.M. His content is thought provoking and important as it flies against the grain of current ideology. From the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation. David R. Legates presentation was titled, 'How will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?' he did a deep dive into real climate data and how environmental extremism is causing problems for the American farmer and overall global food security. Legates has testified three times as an expert witness before the US Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works and before both Pennsylvania House and Senate Committee meetings on climate change. He participated in the historic joint USA-USSR protocol for the exchange of climate information in 1990, won the 2002 Boeing Autometric Award for the Best Paper in Image Analysis and Interpretation by the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, won First Place in the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and ESRI Paper Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was awarded the Courage in Defense of Science Award in 2015.About American Agri-WomenAmerican Agri-Women (AAW) promotes the welfare of our national security through a safe and reliable food, fiber and mineral supply. Strengthening Ties: Opportunities for the US Agricultural Sector in Africa
In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak visits with Gary Hirsch, Founder and President of Global Opportunities. Gary shares his insight into how increasing and strengthening our ties with Africa could be an excellent strategy on many levels.Global Opportunities was founded in order to deepen the economic ties between the people of Africa and the people of the United States and is committed to identifying those opportunities where by working together, jobs and economic growth can be created on both sides while also strengthening the "personal bonds" between Africa's people and the people of the United States. For too long America's adversaries have taken advantage of the United States being economically focused elsewhere and it is time to change this through the building of new partnerships between American and African businesses.Gary Hirsch is the founder and President of Global Opportunities Inc., a United States based company dedicated to increasing trade and economic ties between  U.S. and developing countries, primarily in the Middle East/North Africa region as well as those in Sub Saharan Africa. Mr. Hirsch developed the concept for Global Opportunities based on his concern that in a globally competitive world, increasing  interaction between United States companies and developing economies will not only result in opening up new markets for American products but can also help to provide tremendous opportunities for citizens of the developing world in terms of increasing access to the American market and providing new training opportunities helping to lift local standards of living and address high rates of developing world unemployment. Mr. Hirsch has an extensive background in political and governmental affairs. With over 30 years of experience in the operation and management of Municipal and County political campaigns, Mr. Hirsch is recognized as one of the leading municipal campaign consultants serving the Central New Jersey region. Having participated in and/or managed numerous successful political campaigns, he has been responsible for all facets of campaign operations including but not limited to message development, fundraising,  volunteer recruitment, voter identification and targeting ,  opposition research, budgeting, grass roots support building,  and the development and implementation of all Get Out the Vote efforts leading up to and including Election Day for both  local and County candidates  and  in coordination  at the Municipal Level , with campaigns at other levels of government including State Legislature, Governor, Congress and U.S. President. In addition to this experience, Mr. Hirsch also served in the campaign of President Bill Clinton as Regional Field Coordinator in the early primary states of New Hampshire and Maine  in parts of Northern New Hampshire and West Central Maine.Learn more about Global Opportunities at https://www.globalopportunities.net#farm #farming #agricultureThis episode is sponsored by Fastline - A LEADER IN FARM EQUIPMENT FOR SALEVisit https://agr.fSend us a Text Message. We facilitate the investment process between businesses and investors.
