Straight A Nursing: Study for nursing school exams and NCLEX

Maureen Osuna, MSN, RN - Nursing school educator, author, and nursing student enthusiast.

In this show, Nurse Mo breaks down a wide range of nursing school concepts so they’re easy to understand. Each episode aims to help nursing students improve their study techniques, pass nursing school exams, and feel more confident in clinical. If you’re nervous about nursing school, not “getting it” in lecture, or feeling overwhelmed with all the information you have to learn, this podcast will help you optimize your study time so you can learn more with less stress. While nursing school is challenging, it doesn’t have to be impossible. When concepts are explained in a way that “just makes sense”, nursing students have better recall on exams, feel more confident working with patients in clinical, and are better prepared for NCLEX. Nurse Mo understands the struggles nursing students face and draws on more than 11 years of clinical experience to make nursing school less intimidating. Each episode removes the “fluff” and focuses on the key things a nursing student (and nurse) needs to know about a variety of disease conditions. The show also provides tips for succeeding in nursing school, guidance for students and new nurses, and insider information to help you excel at the bedside. read less

Our Editor's Take

Straight A Nursing is a podcast for students of the profession at any stage of their education. This is the resource that Maureen Osuna, or Nurse Mo, would have loved to have during her training. The host believes nurses learn different things in school than what they need in clinics. Most of them are well-read and receive good grades in their degree. Once they start their first day, though, it feels like they've learned nothing. Everything goes at a rapid pace. They must make quick decisions and handle patients with a whole range of emotions. Nurse Mo's goal is to help bridge the gap between the textbooks and the hospital. She wishes to help new nurses ease into their roles instead of getting overwhelmed.

Nurse Mo started this profession later in life. This fact may provide her with a different perspective on the field. Nurse Mo's first career was in marketing and advertising. At some point, the podcast host felt that her job was dull, and she wanted a career where she could make a difference. So, she took the scary step of beginning nursing school as a mature student.

What she discovered was that her life experience helped her in the clinical setting. She wasn't as worried about what people said. She also knew how to handle different personalities, whether patients, superiors, or coworkers. Nurse Mo's podcast combines advice on people skills with medical knowledge.

Some episodes of Straight A Nursing discuss specific conditions and diseases. Other episodes advise on how to advance in the nursing profession. Some suggest becoming a travel nurse or offer financial tips for new graduates. Listeners can discover excellent nursing advice every Thursday from this weekly podcast.

#335: Your Pacemaker Questions Answered
When the heart rate is irregular or too slow, cardiac output is compromised. A pacemaker may be utilized to support the heart’s electrical system, stabilize arrhythmias, and ensure the heart pumps at a rate that supports tissue perfusion throughout the body.  A pacemaker may be indicated in patients with arrhythmias such as sick sinus syndrome (also known as sinus node dysfunction), symptomatic bradycardia, or high-grade heart blocks. Other indications include post myocardial infarction, heart failure, congenital heart defects, and temporarily after some cardiac surgeries. This episode answers some key questions you have about pacemakers including:  What do all these terms mean? Capture? Sensing? Output? What’s the difference between failure to sense and oversensing? What is failure to capture? What’s the difference between electrical capture and mechanical capture? What are the different types of pacemakers? What do the letters in the pacemaker settings mean? What are some common pacing modes? How do I troubleshoot common temporary pacemaker problems? What is an ICD? Hit play on this episode to learn some basics about pacemakers, so you can feel more confident caring for patients utilizing this very common device! ___________________ Full Transcript - Read the article and view references. #334: Use the ABCs and Maslow to Prioritize Nursing Care
Prioritizing patient care is often difficult for students in nursing school or even new nurses. And while novice nurses thrive when they utilize to-do lists, prioritization is so much more than making a task list and following it throughout your shift. It’s actually a constantly fluctuating component of your workflow that must take multiple factors (and multiple patients) into consideration.  The good news is, most of the time you can answer prioritization questions on nursing school exams and prioritize your nursing care at the bedside by following two key frameworks - the ABCs and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.  Click play on this episode to learn how to work this into your practice and go through some scenarios designed to help you “think like a nurse!” ___________________ Full Transcript - Read the article and view references FREE CLASS - If all you've heard are nursing school horror stories, then you need this class! #333: BONUS! How Cheating Causes Harm - A Conversation with ATI
Even though nursing is THE most trusted profession, you may be surprised to learn that academic misconduct occurs at the same rate amongst nursing students as it does other academic disciplines. One reason for this is that cheating goes beyond just getting “extra help” on an exam, and students may not recognize other aspects of academic dishonesty as actual cheating.  The reason cheating is such a big deal in nursing school is that it’s not just the student who suffers. Ultimately, patient safety is at stake.  In this special bonus episode brought to you by ATI, we’re exploring the concept of academic integrity, what counts as “cheating” and how both the student (and their future patients) are put at risk.  A big thank you to our sponsor, ATI! ATI is a leader in nursing education, dedicated to empowering nursing students and educators with innovative solutions for success on exams and in their careers.
