Our Editor's Take

Victoria Garrick wants to get honest with listeners. Further, she wants listeners to get honest with themselves. On the Real Pod podcast, she discusses life's most significant conversations. Along with terrific guests, Victoria shares how to become one's best self.

Victoria invites celebrities, entrepreneurs, and athletes to discuss life's challenges on Real Pod. In relatable discussions, they find commonality and realness in their daily lives. Being one's best self is not about looking ideal from the outside. As a professional athlete, Victoria always kept up appearances. She looked great. Yet Victoria struggled with anxiety, depression, and an eating disorder. How did she learn to change her perspective on well-being and mental health? She says having honest conversations was an essential part of the process.

Many people struggle with negative self-talk. They say things to themselves they would never say to their friends. People tell themselves that they're too ugly, too fat, not talented, and not smart enough. Internal dialogues create negative feedback loops. Some people also find their behavior shameful. They don't realize their weak moments are ordinary. On the Real Pod podcast, Victoria wants to bring stigmatized topics into the open. She believes that when people get real, everything gets better.

Special guests on Real Pod include Carli Lloyd, Lindsey Metselaar, and Liz Moody. In a powerful episode, Liz discusses body image. She reminds listeners that the body's value is more than how it looks. What the body looks like is the least important thing about it. She shares that healthy bodies may appear so different from each other. In another episode, Danyele Wilson teaches people to love the body type they have. Victoria also shares that she's stopped editing her pictures on social media. Having a curated Instagram feed seems crucial, but being oneself is liberating.

Victoria also provides tips on gaining confidence, freeing oneself from mental slumps, and more. Real Pod is an inspiring podcast that may help listeners overcome personal challenges. It may also help them develop more genuine ways of communicating themselves to the world. Getting real is difficult, but the rewards are life-changing.

Olympian Gracie Gold on Surviving Trauma, Family Secrets & The Pressures of Competitive Figure Skating
TW: This episode contains discussions of sexual assault. While figure skater Gracie Gold was capturing America’s heart in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, her new not-so-fluffy sports memoir, Outofshapeworthlessloser, reveals that her life behind the scenes was more dark comedy than cookie cutter. Gracie has always been candid about her mental health struggles, which is why Vic has always been a big admirer of hers as a female athlete, and this episode is no exception. Gracie vulnerably reveals new details from her life, opening up about her father’s affair and addiction, surviving sexual assault, and being a “failed anorexic.” Gracie and Vic discuss the stigma women face around sexual assault, the pressures of competitive sports, navigating a culture and profession that glamorizes thinness and perfectionism, and you’ll hear Gracie’s plans for her future in ice skating! How to Show Up Imperfectly & Create Change With Shanta Loecker
Shanta Loecker, an anti-oppression facilitator and educator, reached out to Vic four years ago to offer advice on how she could grow and include more people in her mission. Ever since, Shanta and Vic have collaborated to delve into privilege, oppression, racism, and strategies for effecting change. In 2020, Shanta founded 75/25 Impact and currently applies her skills as a creative, complex problem solver and critical thinker to partner with organizations in numerous fields, including the nonprofit sector, health sciences, athletics, small business, and education. In this episode, Shanta generously offers insights into how we can prioritize humanity, community, inclusivity, and make a meaningful impact. Like most of us, Victoria admits to not always getting it right, but we hope this conversation encourages you to embrace imperfection and engage in critical thinking about everyday issues anyway.
