The Importance of Opening Up The World to New Ideas and Perspectives Featuring Anna DeShawn
Let’s close out Women’s History Month with a bang! In this special episode of The Rutledge Perspective, I am joined by none other than Chicago-born media professional and social entrepreneur, Anna DeShawn! Anna is the Founder & CEO of E3 Radio which is an online radio station playing Queer music & reporting on Queer news with an intersectional lens. She is also the Co-Founder & CEO of The Qube, a podcast production company and curated platform to discover the best music & podcasts by BIPOC & QTPOC creatives. Anna is determined to ride media into its next era by utilizing online radio streams to tell the stories and play the music that needs to be heard. Having seen the lack of investment in the podcasting space when it comes to people of color, Anna is on a mission to give a voice to the voiceless and share fresh perspectives with the world. As I like to say, Anna gives people not in those communities a safe place to be curious. Along with her sharing her vision for the future as it pertains to podcasting, Anna also shares with us how she developed a love for media. From growing up admiring Robin Roberts to studying TV production at Drake University and serving different roles on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Anna’s always been involved in the media production process in one way or another and she isn’t stopping any time soon! However, this episode is much deeper than media production. This show is about someone with multiple marginalized identities standing on the shoulders of those that came before her and sharing different perspectives with hopes to open people’s minds and push society forward. How to Gain Clarity, Take Action, and Have a Lasting Impact Featuring Rebecca M. Thompson
Have you ever felt like you wanted to make a big change in your life but were afraid of everything that could potentially come with making that move? Maybe, you’re okay with the fear of the unknown but you can’t come to grips with the scrutiny that you will face from others for making a pivot in your career. If that’s you, then you should go ahead, and press play on this episode because my guest is going to help light your path and bring you some much-needed clarity that will help you transform your life from the inside out! In today’s episode of The Rutledge Perspective, I am joined by the marvelous Rebecca M. Thompson. Rebecca is a Clarity Coach for high-achieving black women and the Founder of the Live in Your Light Bootcamp, which is a transformative 3-month personal and professional executive coaching experience for high-achieving black women who want the clarity and confidence to transform their lives. Rebecca provides us with tangible tips on how to examine our lives, gain clarity on what matters most, and then take action to make an impact. She also shares personal stories of times when she had to make transitions and pivots in her own life. As a child, Rebecca completed a summer internship working alongside a political figure that would spark her interest in politics. That shaped her goals and moves that she made from there on but a career in politics was not where she ultimately landed. She had to go through a lot of trials and tribulations to become the woman that she is today and that is someone that took the time to discover themselves and is aware that she wouldn’t be where she is if she was afraid to live life! Take this show as your permission to live life and realize that it’s okay to take multiple paths in life. You’re not a failure if something doesn’t feel right to you anymore. It’s okay to dig into those feelings and maybe make an adjustment, pivot, or shift to move into that next thing. See Rebecca M. Thompson’s full bio here. 𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 📝 🔑 Get out of what is comfortable & easy and fail faster! It is supposed to be hard but it will also be joyful. 🔑 Do it afraid and don’t tell everybody. Go dark! This allows you to do the difficult things without the judgment of what people think. 🔑 There’s no such thing as permeant decisions are people. 🔑 Bonus: Please understand that the fear does not go away, you will constantly have to push past fear to live the life that you want to live. ℍ𝕠𝕞𝕖𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜 📚 Give yourself a chance to evaluate your life and determine if that’s the one that you want. If you feel convicted about transforming your life and making a pivot, then ask yourself this question: what’s the worst that can possibly happen? 𝓯𝓾𝓵𝓵 🎧 𝓪𝓷𝓭 📹 𝓪𝓽 🔗 𝓲𝓷 𝓫𝓲𝓸  Be sure to tune in each week for new episodes! Food is Medicine: Why the Key to True Wellness is in Your Diet Featuring Dr. Shayla Toombs-Withers
This week on the Rutledge Perspective Podcast, I am joined by the amazing Dr. Shayla Toombs-Withers and we will be talking about a major key in unlocking true wellness, your diet! Dr. Toombs-Withers is a board-certified physician in family medicine & obesity medicine, and the founder of Essence of Health Wellness Clinic based in Chattanooga, TN. Her belief is that we should have our food be our medicine! The health disparities that black communities face are no secret. It’s also not a secret that we have the highest rates of diabetes, strokes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and cancer. However, did you know that a large part of these health conditions are preventable by simply moving our bodies and also by what we consume? A lot of illnesses can be traced back to stress and we deal with a lot of stress in black communities due to factors outside of our control but what we can control is what we put on our plate. Dr. Toombs-Withers is here to share her story of how switching to a plant-based diet helped her overcome her bout with abdominal pain. She also talks about the benefits of a plant-based diet and how we can rethink & unlearn common misconceptions surrounding it. Ultimately, her goal is to get people to participate in their own health and to get more plants on their plate…NOW! See Dr. Shayla Toombs-Withers’ full bio here. 𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 📝 🔑 The essence of health is in you! 🔑 Keep saying something to your doctor if something doesn’t feel right. Even if you are doing well with all the medical screening and tests. 🔑 If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will make time for your illness. 🔑 Bonus: Plant-based eating doesn’t have to be more expensive. You can buy things in bulk like brown rice, dried beans, and oatmeal. ℍ𝕠𝕞𝕖𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜 📚 This is a very easy homework assignment…GET MORE PLANTS ON YOUR PLATE! Start today and keep it simple. Start subbing plants into things that you like and build from there. Don’t make it complicated. 𝓯𝓾𝓵𝓵 🎧 𝓪𝓷𝓭 📹 𝓪𝓽 🔗 𝓲𝓷 𝓫𝓲𝓸  Be sure to tune in each week for new episodes! Breaking Barriers to Build a Sustainable Business! Featuring Rachel Soweija

Breaking Barriers to Build a Sustainable Business! Featuring Rachel Soweija
This week on the Rutledge Perspective Podcast, we will continue to celebrate Women’s History Month by highlighting amazing women that are accomplishing outstanding feats. Meet Rachel Soweija! Rachel is the owner of Vida Design, an interior design company based in Portland, Oregon. Today, Rachel shares with us how she had to overcome both external and internal barriers to get her business off the ground and to see it grow to over 70 employees and 4 different locations. She also goes in-depth about team building and what it takes to assemble a winning team. Rachel walks us through the fears that she faced when starting a business after being let go from her job upon her return from maternity leave. She also talks about the mistakes that she made along the way and the lessons that she learned from them. Lastly, Rachel shares how she gained clarity with the vision for herself as well as for her business. With data showing that most small businesses only last about 2-3 years, it’s great to get insight into what it takes to not only start a business but to have longevity from someone whose company has been thriving for over 14 years. I hope that you take away something valuable from this amazing woman and learn that it’s okay to be afraid but just do it anyway! Learn more about Rachel here:   Rachel was raised in Texas and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1998 with a degree in Interior Architecture. After working for a short time in San Antonio, TX at GSC Architects, Rachel and her husband were seeking a new adventure and relocated to Portland. The PNW offered lots of varied opportunities for work and project type. Rachel began at Soderstrom Architects, then moved to Bora Architects, specializing in the design of schools and performing arts centers. Moving to a new project type and a new firm, MGA,
in 2003, Rachel was able to gain traction in the world of Hospitality and Mixed-Use Housing, which quickly became her passion.  In 2009, in the heart of the recession, Rachel pivoted away from her role at MGA and Vida Design was born. The vision for Vida was a simple one; provide clients with an all-inclusive, boutique design experience, and incredible service with no attitude. The growth of Vida was steady and by 2013, the firm was up to twenty employees. Today, Vida is a thriving firm of forty-three with an unwavering vision for design excellence, a supportive culture, and meaningful client relationships. Rachel functions as CEO and President at Vida and is still extremely involved in forging relationships with new clients, supporting design teams, and strategic visioning.  𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 📝 🔑 If you want to go fast go alone if you want to go far go with others! 🔑 When stepping into your dream learn to do it afraid. Sit in a space that’s uncomfortable. You’re not going to die. 🔑 Don’t apologize for making pivots. You are allowed to pivot; you are the boss! 🔑 Bonus: Let yourself dream. Allow your body & soul to explore.  ℍ𝕠𝕞𝕖𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜 📚 You don’t have to have every fact in place before taking a leap. Sometimes you don’t need all the data you just need enough to get going. Have you been overanalyzing? Are you in your own head? Are you creating barriers for yourself? If you are thinking about taking a leap into entrepreneurship, start planning a safety net to give your brain some freedom and start doing research to see exactly what resources you need to make your dream a reality. 𝓯𝓾𝓵𝓵 🎧 𝓪𝓷𝓭 📹 𝓪𝓽 🔗 𝓲𝓷 𝓫𝓲𝓸  Be sure to tune in each week for new episodes! Why You Should Be Your Own Advocate and Take Control of Your Health

Why You Should Be Your Own Advocate and Take Control of Your Health
Let’s kick off Women’s History Month with a bang by talking about taking your health into your own hands. By now, we are all aware of the issues that the black community and women as a whole face as it pertains to the disparity in health care. Although I highly encourage you to see a doctor regularly, there are things that you can do to live a much healthier life. There are also things that you can do to ensure that you get the best possible care from your doctor and/or health team and I have three amazing board-certified physicians on me with me today to talk about just that. Dr. Shayla Toombs-Withers (bio), Dr. Tuere Coulter Hawkins (bio), and Dr. Ken Redcross (bio) join me today as we explore the importance of mental health as it pertains to your overall health, proper nutrition, and how simply moving your body could help improve a lot of ailments that you’re dealing with. These experienced physicians also talk about how to be your own advocate when dealing with health professionals which is very important given the lack of black representation in the medical field. Lastly, each doctor will share their individual journey in medicine. *Disclaimer* These doctors are not giving YOU specific health care advice. Please see your doctor or health care provider. This podcast episode is from my bi-weekly Fireside show called Alignment vision action. Check it out here: https://firesidechat.com/laurelrutledge 𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 📝 🔑 Know your health history… I repeat Know your health history! 🔑 Don’t be afraid to build a relationship with your doctor and let them know about your questions and concerns. 🔑 Be your own advocate! Manage your health & wellness in a way that ensures that you get the care that you need. *Especially women* ℍ𝕠𝕞𝕖𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜 📚 Please, please, please…go see your doctor and encourage others to do the same! Know your health history and be well informed of any medical conditions that you may have so that the doctors can provide you with the proper care. If you don’t have a relationship with your doctor, please work on that now so that you all can have open communication and dialogue about your overall health & wellness. 𝓯𝓾𝓵𝓵 🎧 𝓪𝓷𝓭 📹 𝓪𝓽 🔗 𝓲𝓷 𝓫𝓲𝓸  Be sure to tune in each week for new episodes! The Power of Making Meaningful Connections
Feb 22 2023
The Power of Making Meaningful Connections
Have you ever heard the expression, “it’s not what you know but who you know?” Well, I’m here to tell you that this statement is partly true. Networking and connections are important but it’s meaningful connections with the right intentions that are truly powerful! Connection is hearing what someone needs and being able to fulfill that need. It’s not a selfish pursuit to shake hands with everyone in the room or to give out every single business card. Connection is about service, impact, and combining resources. We must realize that when we build up others, we build up ourselves. In this episode, I share a powerful & inspiring story about a recent connection that I made that truly filled my heart. This God-ordained connection that I was able to facilitate will bring value and opportunities to so many people. Just remember to always stay connected to who you are, stay connected to your bigger why stay connected to your bigger purpose, and stay open to those things that come to you as opportunities for you to deliver on your purpose. Also, look for opportunities to connect with other people. 𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 📝 🔑 When you really know who you are, that allows you to show up with a level of confidence that allows you to connect with other people. 🔑 Prosperity comes when you serve and are present for the right reasons. 🔑 Always aim to be a solution for one person in a room, not to just meet everyone in the room. ℍ𝕠𝕞𝕖𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜 📚 Sit deep with this and think about the connections that you have. Think about the connections that you want to have, the connections that you can make for others. 𝓯𝓾𝓵𝓵 🎧 𝓪𝓷𝓭 📹 𝓪𝓽 🔗 𝓲𝓷 𝓫𝓲𝓸  Be sure to tune in each week for new episodes! Qualifications vs Experience: Which is More Critical to Your Team's Success?

Qualifications vs Experience: Which is More Critical to Your Team's Success?
Are you a business owner or a leader of an organization that’s looking to hire top talent? If so, you may have had the struggle of weighing experience against qualifications. I’m here to tell you that the two are not mutually exclusive or guaranteed to exist at the same time. Someone can be qualified but lack experience or they can have a ton of experience but lack the necessary qualifications. What’s important is that hiring professionals first have a clear vision of what you are looking for and why when looking to hire someone to support your team. What qualifications are you looking for? What are you requiring people to have in order to do the job that you’re hiring for? In other words, what level of qualification will people need to have to demonstrate that they have the ability to deliver a solution to your needs and ensure that your team is successful? Is it possible that you need someone with more experience? If so, understand that this will be more expensive. Can you afford the top talent that brings solutions to your organization, or do you need to hire people that meet the qualifications and that can be trained to meet your standards? We’re breaking this down and much more on this information-rich episode of the Rutledge Perspective. Check it out! 𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 📝 🔑 Qualifications are certifications or degrees. Experience is time spent doing the job or a role similar to the job that you need to be filled. 🔑 Top talent is the best talent that you can get in your market for what you’re willing to pay. 🔑 When you think about what qualifications are critical to success your world opens up to possibilities. ℍ𝕠𝕞𝕖𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜 📚 If you are hiring someone to be your CFO, virtual assistant, staff member, or an integral part of your organization, ask yourself these very important questions: 1.             What qualifications are necessary for the job that you need to be filled? 2.             Are you in a position to hire someone that is qualified but lacks experience? 3.             Is your staff qualified to properly train new hires and onboard them correctly? 𝓯𝓾𝓵𝓵 🎧 𝓪𝓷𝓭 📹 𝓪𝓽 🔗 𝓲𝓷 𝓫𝓲𝓸  Be sure to tune in each week for new episodes! Maximizing Your Human Capital: Why Leaders Need to Understand that People Are Their Biggest Asset

Maximizing Your Human Capital: Why Leaders Need to Understand that People Are Their Biggest Asset
Let’s talk about the concept of people being assets or human capital. Have you ever heard that it’s wrong to call a person an asset? Well, I’m here to challenge that thought! People are absolutely an asset. Actually, as a leader, they are the greatest asset that you can have. Context matters folks. The word asset isn’t a problem, it’s how we treat people and how we treat assets in our organization that’s the problem.  If we are going to drive our businesses, companies, and even personal relationships forward, we must invest our time, energy, and resources into people. The purpose of this episode is to get you to maximize your human capital. Once you invest in the best assets (people), they will create the best profits! Takeaways 📝  🔑 Value your assets as much as you value profit. 🔑 Remember this: mission first, people always. 🔑 There’s a difference between irreplaceable and expendable. Homework 📚  If you are a business owner or a leader of a company, ask yourself- are your words and actions in alignment as it pertains to the resources, time, and energy spent on the people that you claim are your biggest asset?  Be sure to tune in each week for new episodes!  Learn more about the host here: https://laurelrutledge.com  Let’s connect: Instagram: @laurel.k.rutledge Facebook: Laurel K Rutledge Linkedin: Laurel K. Imperfection Has Value: How to Use it to Your Advantage

Imperfection Has Value: How to Use it to Your Advantage
Let’s discuss the value of imperfection. We often get caught up in a cycle of perfectionism when it comes to succeeding in life. We strive to not make any mistakes, to get everything right the first time, and to put our best foot forward. But what if I told you that imperfection can actually be an asset? The power of imperfection lies in the fact that it allows us to learn and adapt to new situations. Embracing imperfection gives us the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them, instead of being afraid of falling short and letting that fear limit our growth. Instead of resenting mistakes, use them as tools to help you understand different concepts and problem-solve more effectively. My goal with this episode is to help you realize that there’s no such thing as perfect. Embrace the unknown and keep pushing yourself further. I promise you, it will be worth it. Takeaways 📝  🔑 Inexperience & imperfections are opportunities to learn and grow. 🔑 Imperfect action is better than perfect inaction. 🔑 There are insights and lots of data within your imperfections that you can use to push you toward your goals. Homework 📚  Ask yourself this: What imperfection has stopped me from pursuing a goal? What is the goal and is this goal worth obtaining? What do I need to learn or what skills do I need to gain in order to overcome that imperfection and reach said goal? Why Price Does Not Always Reflect Value

Why Price Does Not Always Reflect Value
Are you an entrepreneur, coach, or consultant that struggles with pricing your products or services? Maybe, you’re an employee that has had difficulty negotiating a raise. If you wear any of these hats, this is the show for you! This episode of the Rutledge Perspective is packed full of tangible information that will help you navigate through compensation negotiations with the utmost clarity. There’s a misconception that we are to be compensated based on our worth. The truth is that we demand a certain compensation based on the value that we bring & deliver to our organization or clients.  Once we understand this concept, we will be able to remove emotions from compensation discussions and tell a clear story of the value that we bring, and the price attached to that value! Takeaways 📝 🔑 Your base salary is not indicative of your value. 🔑 Eliminate the external response to money tied to value. 🔑 No one can pay you what you’re worth because you are priceless because you exist. Homework 📚 Evaluate the value that you are bringing to your work, your business, or your specific department. The Importance of Defining Your Own Value
Jan 11 2023
The Importance of Defining Your Own Value
Don’t overthink this, you are valuable! You’re not valuable because of your job, your title, or your income. You’re valuable simply because you exist. If you do not clearly define your own value, external factors will begin to shape how you view yourself as a human being.  As we begin this new year and we look at what we hope to accomplish, it’s important to first establish who we are and where we are. Where you are doesn’t change who you are, it only informs how you show up as who you are and how you navigate through situations. This episode will not only help you define your own self value, it will help you establish a solid foundation and develop your own personal guide towards a meaningful life! Takeaways 📝  🔑 You are valuable because you’re here. 🔑 Your skills, expertise, and experiences add value but don’t determine value. 🔑 Use who you are and your own integrity as your guide for fulfillment and appreciation. Homework 📚  Complete this sentence: I am valuable because ____________?  Take some time to think about this.
