General manager Ryan Poles took a big swing in the trade market to get the Chicago Bears an established veteran at a premium position. The Bears sent a fourth-round pick — No. 110 — to the Los Angeles Chargers for wide receiver Keenan Allen on Thursday night. The 31-year-old had 108 catches for 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns in 13 games last season and made his sixth Pro Bowl. Allen steps in as a starting receiver alongside DJ Moore and immediately eliminates the pressing need at the position. For now. The 2024 season is the final one in Allen’s contract. He rejected an offer to take a pay cut from the team that drafted him in 2013 and will now play on a new team for the first time in his NFL career. Money can fly around during the first days of free agency. With a jump in the salary cap, there can be some unexpected bumps in salaries. Nowhere was that more apparent than at guard. Almost half of the guard contracts in the league, which average $10 million or more, were signed this week. This might not be a surprise given that, before free agency started, guards had one of the highest growth rates of the top-five contracts among offensive positions over the past decade. It makes sense that right tackles and guards would start to catch up with left tackles as teams continue to emphasize the offensive line value. Spring football is already underway at more than 30 FBS schools, and the rest will kick things off over the coming weeks. This practice slate becomes more important by the year as programs work an increasing number of early enrollees and winter transfers into their systems, giving them head starts in their preparation for the upcoming season.
