Louis was an Olympic athlete at the Games in Berlin when Hitler was in power. World War II—Louie was a U.S. Air Corps bombardier on a routine search mission over the Pacific when his plane crashed into the ocean. After surviving in a life raft, drifting 2,000 miles for 47 days into Japanese controlled waters, he faced his rescuers who were also his torturers, and suffered the remainder of the war in a series of prison camps. Louie endured incredible hardships almost too unbearable to believe. Today at 94 years of age, Louie is still spry, and full of life.
