Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools

Mark Taylor

Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future. While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced. Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. The Education on Fire community is shining the torch, so no matter where you are in the world or how you are supporting children this podcast is here for you. ‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’ read less

322: Kinesthetic learning in pre-K to 2nd grade with Walkabouts
Walkabouts are on-demand adventures that transform math, language arts, and reading content into short, movement-rich activities for pre-K to 2nd grade students. Teachers report that Walkabouts help build students’ confidence, improve self-awareness, and enhance self-control. This evidence-based online curriculum supplement makes it easy for teachers and parents to create kinesthetic learning activities — fun lessons that bring key concepts to life through active learning techniques. Walkabouts are even correlated to the state standards (plus Head Start and NAEYC standards) teachers already use. Plus, unlike traditional videos or brain breaks, Walkabouts are dynamic and different each time they play. Watch as a Walkabout is created and played. As a kinesthetic learner, Dr. Julian Reed - Walkabouts co-founder - remembers his active classes in school most fondly. He based Walkabouts on scientific research that proves kids who move more perform better academically. He hopes to kick start a new generation of children who stay active and learn at the same time.Websitewww.walkabouts.comSocial Media Information@DrJulianReed@getwalkaboutswww.facebook.com/walkaboutsResources MentionedSpark - John Ratey M.DWhy Learning Is Not All in Your Head - Carla HannafordShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)Primary Education Summit – ‘Visions for the Future’ – March 2023Book NOW at www.nape.org.uk/summit

321: Global Girl Project with Julia Lynch
Julia Lynch founded Global Girl Project in 2014, after over twenty years working as a Community Social Worker and Therapist. During this time Julia traveled extensively, including time spent in Tanzania and Jamaica providing community and health services to local at-risk communities. This work ignited her passion for supporting marginalized girls, and GGP was born. As a woman of colour who grew up in a small, white town Julia learned from an early age how imperative it is to see yourself represented in positions of power and leadership. Since that time, Julia has worked tirelessly to not only be a role model for her global girls, but to train them on how to be role models and leaders to others within their communities. As the Founding Director, Julia works in partnership with NGOs and schools globally to implement and run leadership programs and initiatives for girls throughout the developing world. Julia not only works directly with our scholars online, but also runs the day-to-day operations of GGP from the United Kingdom. Through GGP programming the impact in each local partner country has been evident. From an increase in self-confidence, leadership skills and self-perceived power and autonomy from the girls, to a shift in perception of gender roles and capabilities from local community members, the impact that is being created is truly global in scope.Websitewww.globalgirlproject.orgSocial Media Informationwww.facebook.com/globalgirlprojectwww.linkedin.com/company/global-girl-project/Instagram: globalgirlprojectTwitter: @GlobalGirlProjShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)Primary Education Summit – ‘Visions for the Future’ – March 2023Book NOW at www.nape.org.uk/summit

318: Mountain Point Academy Accredited Online School
Sara Busalacchi and Anjilee Ferguson have over a decade each of experience in the Online Education industry. Through their educational experiences they found a deep passion for helping others succeed and grow. Because of their passion they co-founded their online school, Mountain Point Academy, where they encourage students to embrace and foster the skills needed for lifelong learning.Sara and Anjilee also share some similar passions outside of the school. They both have a love for the outdoors, music, and especially their families. Anjilee loves traveling to new places, and Sara loves jamming out with her band.Mountain Point Academy’s mission is to commit to providing a student-centered academic experience by creating an environment grounded in respect, integrity, and commitment to learning. Students and staff work together as each student strives to reach his or her academic potential. What does it mean to be student-centered? MPA operates under the belief that all students can learn, but the way that happens looks a little bit different for each student. William Spady says it perfectly when he states that, “All students can learn and succeed, but not on the same day in the same way.”  MPA works with all types of students; whether you love school and can’t wait to graduate high school early to get to college, or if you have struggled in the past and are looking for an alternative to your brick-and-mortar school, we have you covered!Every student that enters our doors (figuratively of course!) is assigned an Academic Mentor. This MPA staff member acts as your advocate throughout your time at Mountain Point. You’ll never have to worry about who to turn to when you have a question on your homework, your graduation status, career planning, or anything else! Your mentor will contact you weekly to check in, set goals, and see how you’re doing. This human-to-human contact is what sets us apart from many other online schools.Websitewww.mountainpointacademy.comSocial Media InformationInstagram: @mtnpointacademyFacebook: Mountain Point Academy🎙: The Thing About SchoolMark's episode no. 31 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-thing-about-school/id1625480894Resources MentionedFish in a tree - Lynda Mullaly HuntOut of My Mind - Sharon M. 312: Reading Simplified with Marnie Ginsberg Ph.D
Marnie Ginsberg, Founder of Reading Simplified, is a reading difficultiesdetective who streamlines the science and art of reading instruction soteachers can rapidly learn effective techniques that help students accelerateto grade level and beyond. She also helps translate the latest understandingsfrom science into practical, easy-to-implement activities. In the late 1990s, Marnie uncovered that her 6th-grade language arts students,on average, were reading 2 years below grade level. And despite her master’sdegree and enthusiasm, she had no idea how to remediate their word-readingdifficulties.After eventually finding solutions for her struggling readers, she led thedevelopment of the Targeted Reading Intervention at the University of NorthCarolina. Across 15+ years, multiple research articles have demonstratedthat struggling K-2 readers grow significantly in reading with the TargetedReading Intervention (TRI), which is on the federal What Works Clearinghouseand is endorsed by many organizations such as Evidence for ESSA and RANDCorporation’s Promising Practices Network. Given the repeated, strong resultsof the TRI across multiple clinical trials, Dr. Ginsberg expanded the resourcesand adapted the professional learning approach to provide Reading Simplifiedfor a broader audience beginning in 2013.Websitewww.readingsimplified.comwww.readingsimplified.com/switch-itSocial Media Informationfacebook.com/readingsimplifiedinstagram.com/readingsimplifiedtwitter.com/readsimplifiedlinkedin.com/in/marnie-ginsberg-readingResources MentionedReading ReflexWhy Our Children Can't ReadShow SponsorNational Association for Primary Education (NAPE) are planning a Primary Education Summit in March 2023. 309: InnerWill Leadership Institute with Dr. Thomas Epperson
Dr. Thomas Epperson is the president of InnerWill Leadership Institute and has over 20 years of experience as a leadership coach, facilitator, and speaker, and he regularly works with clients to help transform leaders and their organizations.Tom is a certified business coach and has a doctorate in leadership from The George Washington University. Tom is currently an instructor in Virginia Commonwealth Universities’ Executive MBA Program. He is the author of InnerWill, Developing Better People, Braver Leaders, and a Wiser World Through the Practice of Values-Based Leadership.Tom believes that leadership is a choice, not a title, and that our responsibility as leaders is to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us. Tom balances high expectations of himself and others with relentless optimism about the ability of individuals to make our organizations, families, and communities amazing places to live, work, and grow. Tom believes that leadership is a powerful force for good in the world, if we choose to do so; his personal mission in life is to help others develop the skills to make that choice more often than not.Tom works hard to be a great husband and father; he’s married to a strong, creative woman and has two fantastic sons who have taught him that we can learn as much about ourselves and our leadership at home as we can at work.Born out of Luck Companies, InnerWillLeadership Institute was founded to teach other leaders how to build values-based organizations which ignite the potential in people. After an 85-year history as a successful business, President and CEO Charlie Luck IV realized that the business had so much more potential if alignment and collaboration of senior management could be improved. This led to a Values Based Leadership (VBL) journey—for his family and for the workplace. Ultimately, the Values Based Leadership principles and practices were shared with every employee at Luck Companies and every Luck family member. As a result, Luck Companies is the largest family-held and family-run aggregate business in the country, ranks in the top three most engaged places to work in the US, and is a thriving organization built for the future. The impact to Luck Companies, and to the individuals touched and transformed by the VBL journey, inspired the launch of InnerWill. Leadership is a choice, not a title –a conscious choice to work first on yourself to in turn positively impact the lives of those around you. Developing self-awareness takes tenacity and grit, while standing up for your core values take courage. We reflected on our definition of leadership and the strength needed to achieve it and chose the name InnerWill.Today, InnerWill teaches the necessary skills to strengthen leadership capabilities and drive results through the practice of VBL. More than a training company, InnerWillis a 501 c3 nonprofit that invests in the organizations and people that we serve through customized solutions built to ensure positive and measurable impacts.Websitewww.innerwill.orgSocial Media Informationwww.linkedin.com/company/innerwillShow SponsorNational Association for Primary Education (NAPE) are planning a Primary Education Summit in March 2023.
