Our Editor's Take

The Jim Bohannon podcast started as a late-night radio show in 1985. Even then, Bohannon was already a familiar radio personality. This fame was thanks to his time on CNN, but more because of his appearance as a regular guest host on The Larry King Show. When King decided to focus his career more on television, Bohannon took over his radio spot and became as popular as his predecessor.

During his 30 years on air, Bohannon talked about politics and pop culture. But unlike other broadcasters, he didn't hold any extreme opinions. Instead, Bohannon preferred to be a "militant moderate," as he said so himself. He didn't seek to convince anyone to follow his beliefs. Instead, his goal was to be a trusted storyteller. The Jim Bohannon podcast host desired to be the one who provided the whole story with humor and patience.

The show ran daily on the radio from 10 pm to 1 am and became prevalent over the years, thanks to Bohannon's unique style. This is the podcast version of the Jim Bohannon radio show. Celebrities flocked to join him on air and get a chance to experience his interviewing style. In the second half of the show, callers would phone in from all over the country to share their uncensored views. The broadcaster was always compassionate with his listeners and never started any arguments. It was a show that wanted to include and not enrage.

Bohannon won several awards for his radio career over the years. The National Radio Hall of Fame also inducted him into its ranks in 2003, and NAB's Broadcasting Hall of Fame did so in 2021.

In 2022, Bohannon stepped down from hosting and passed away later that year. But his successor, Rich Valdés, stays true to the format of current events, interviews, and call-ins. The Jim Bohannon podcast continued under the same name for a few months. However, it later rebranded to Rich Valdés America at Night. But fans of Bohannon can listen to these old podcast episodes.
