Episode 30: Is It All Worth It?Summary: What do we do when our students move from following Jesus to following the world? When we see kids who were full of joy and consistently showed up to our youth programs, they are now jaded and hurt from their decisions and consistently don't show up. But what does that mean, and how can we learn to experience and become more aware of God's presence in our own lives and youth ministries? 23: Practicing Silence With Guest Kevin Cain
In this episode, James' Senior Pastor and book author Kevin Cain helps us understand the spiritual discipline of silence. Drawing from his own experience, Kevin shares how practicing silence helps us learn how to break away with God from the noise and speed of the crowd so that we can learn to live in the stillness of body, mouth, and mind with God and within the crowd. (My note on this book: This will be your go to book on ministering to families in the midst of their grief).Book Synopsis: Ask any Appalachian the question, "When is Appalachia most beautiful?" Every Appalachian will answer, "During autumn, when the leaves of Appalachia's trees are dying." Appalachians believe the beauty of their landscape is almost heaven. With the honor of officiating nearly 1000 funerals, Pastor Kevin Cain offers life in the midst of death. In As She Is Dying, Kevin Cain writes, "I have given my life to bring hope to a people who have little reason to hope. Maybe Appalachians have allowed our hills' majesty and grandeur to blind us from coal dust and addiction. Yet, I do see hope. I see hope in what is dying. I see hope in what is dead. I see hope in what remains. Yes, death has the keen ability to either clear up, cover up or stir up. Still, sometimes we must descend in order to turn into the clouds. As She Is Dying is a book about death that offers stories of life. In these pages, you will find a little bit of wisdom, some stories of hope, and the eulogizing words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart which I trust have been acceptable in the sight of my strength and my Redeemer. Somehow and somewhere in death, hope must be discovered. Maybe, through the literal metaphor of Appalachians' deaths, you can see life. Some were reconciled long before their deaths. Some were reconciled just prior to their deaths. And, others were reconciled in the midst of death. There is hope for all...hope's breath, even in death."The Humility of Being Found - https://amzn.to/36EvUOBBook Synopsis: The need to be rescued is somewhat about personal incompleteness and mostly about God, who desires to have loving communion with creation. Spiritual rescue follows a simple pattern: Messiah is lovingly sent to rescue; each has a tendency to fight against the Rescuer; personal humility is a statement of faithful surrender and the key to being found; the greatest journey of rescue is Jesus Messiah’s upper room to empty tomb victory over sin and death; now rescued, the individual’s only responsibility is to bear the Christ Who bears our wounds. 22: Solitude: Learning We Are Never Alone
The practice of solitude can often be overlooked or misunderstood, but it is through the intentional practice of being alone with Jesus that helps us learn that we are never truly alone. By practicing solitude, the promise of God's presence and grace can become a reality in our hearts and minds. In This episode James provides an introduction to solitude, how God has used it in his own life and ministry, and some practical steps on how to begin this spiritual discipline in your own life.Books mentioned in this podcast:The Way of the Heart - Henri NouwenInvitation to Solitude and Silence: Experiencing God's Transforming Presence - Ruth Haley BartonConnect with Us...Personal Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jamessabin13/Podcast Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ym_soul_keeper_podcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Youth-Ministry-Soul-Keeper-Podcast-112370807089603/?modal=admin_todo_tourTwitter - https://twitter.com/youth_keeperWould love to hear from you with questions and comments at the following email: ymsoulkeeper@gmail.comConnect with Guest Co-Host - Eben EddyInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/ebeneddy/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/eben.eddyPodcast FriendsDYM Podcast – http://bit.ly/341g9e4Youth Ministry Hacks – http://bit.ly/2WazOoYWhat It is, What It Means – http://bit.ly/2p08w8VMy Third Decade – http://bit.ly/2UzlpjLFifteen Minutes With Frank - https://bit.ly/2I7E0msYM Lab – http://bit.ly/2pO1GDmThe Morning After Ministry Show – http://bit.ly/2ofNLpbParent Tips – http://bit.ly/32MzM9nYW’s Guide to Video Games – http://bit.ly/2Wds7yDYouth Ministry Sherpas – https://bit.ly/31VIIvsMiddle School Ministry – https://bit.ly/2BHezWj

21: Programming Retreats and Camps For The Soul
Our students' lives and schedules are overwhelming, high-paced, and filled with all sorts of pressures and expectations. As youth leaders, we can program retreats and camps that can help our students experience the rest for their souls that Jesus promises. In this episode, we are challenged to ask a question, "How can we program and plan our retreats so that they are not a continuation of their already hard-pressed and busy lives, but a true retreat from them?" The goal is for our retreat and camp programming to be intentional so that we all can experience the margin and rest needed.Retreat Schedule mentioned in the podcast:Friday7:00pm - Registration8:15pm - The Gathering with crowd breakers and games9:00pm - Worship and message10:30pm - Snacks and hang time 11:15pm - Cabins and devotion12:00am - Lights OutSaturday8:30am - Breakfast9:30am - Devotional Time with group sharing after10:00am - Crowd Breaker / Game10:15am - Worship and message11:15am - Organized Free Time12:30am - Lunch1:30pm - Retreat Games2:15pm - Organized Free Time4:45pm - Clean up5:30pm - Dinner6:30pm - Crowd Breaker / Game7:00pm - Worship and Message8:45pm - Snacks and Drinks / Hang / Table Games9:30pm - Evening Activity / Fire Pit11:00pm - Cabins and devotion12:00am - Lights OutSunday8:30am - Breakfast9:15am - Packing and Loading Trailers9:45am - Worship and Message11:00am - Retreat endsConnect with Us...- Personal Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jamessabin13/- Podcast Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ym_soul_keeper_podcast/- Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Youth-Ministry-Soul-Keeper-Podcast-112370807089603/?modal=admin_todo_tour- Twitter - https://twitter.com/youth_keeperWould love to hear from you with questions and comments at the following email: ymsoulkeeper@gmail.comConnect with Guest Co-Host - Eben Eddy- Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ebeneddy/- Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/eben.eddyPodcast FriendsDYM Podcast – http://bit.ly/341g9e4Youth Ministry Hacks – http://bit.ly/2WazOoYWhat It is, What It Means – http://bit.ly/2p08w8VMy Third Decade – http://bit.ly/2UzlpjLFifteen Minutes With Frank - https://bit.ly/2I7E0msYM Lab – http://bit.ly/2pO1GDmThe Morning After Ministry Show – http://bit.ly/2ofNLpbParent Tips – http://bit.ly/32MzM9nYW’s Guide to Video Games – http://bit.ly/2Wds7yDYouth Ministry Sherpas – https://bit.ly/31VIIvsMiddle School Ministry – https://bit.ly/2BHezWj

20: Your Love For Ministry Could Be Dangerous To Your Soul
Let's just say it. A healthy growing ministry is not the indicator of a healthy growing ministry leader. In this episode, James talks about how our love for ministry, and even the people we are ministering to, can be a distraction and even an idol that causes our affection for Jesus to become misplaced. We look at some questions we may need to ask ourselves so that we can be spiritually healthy for the long haul.Books mentioned in this podcast:Unhurried Leader - Alan Fadling (link: https://amzn.to/2XVlrtT)Blessed Broken Given: How Your Story Becomes Sacred in the Hands of Jesus - Glenn Packiam (link: https://amzn.to/2XTsMKa)Connect with Us...Personal Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jamessabin13/Podcast Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ym_soul_keeper_podcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Youth-Ministry-Soul-Keeper-Podcast-112370807089603/?modal=admin_todo_tourTwitter - https://twitter.com/youth_keeperWould love to hear from you with questions and comments at the following email: ymsoulkeeper@gmail.comConnect with Guest Co-Host - Eben EddyInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/ebeneddy/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/eben.eddyPodcast FriendsDYM Podcast – http://bit.ly/341g9e4Youth Ministry Hacks – http://bit.ly/2WazOoYWhat It is, What It Means – http://bit.ly/2p08w8VMy Third Decade – http://bit.ly/2UzlpjLFifteen Minutes With Frank - https://bit.ly/2I7E0msYM Lab – http://bit.ly/2pO1GDmThe Morning After Ministry Show – http://bit.ly/2ofNLpbParent Tips – http://bit.ly/32MzM9nYW’s Guide to Video Games – http://bit.ly/2Wds7yDYouth Ministry Sherpas – https://bit.ly/31VIIvsMiddle School Ministry – https://bit.ly/2BHezWj

19: Being Called Out or Getting Out
Youth ministry comes with all sorts of joys and hardships. When times are good, we think we want to stay at a church forever, and when times become more difficult, we can begin to look for reasons and excuses to leave. As strong as our emotions can be during times of struggle, we need to be able to have some stoppers in place that will help create clarity so we don't do something we regret and cause more hurt. In this episode, James and co-host Eben talk about some of those stoppers, so that when we are tempted to get out, we make sure we are being called out instead. 16: Success is a Slippery Slope

16: Success is a Slippery Slope
Success in ministry can be a slippery slope because we have a tendency to believe that the success we may experience in ministry is directly related to our spiritual maturity or God's approval. Just think about some of the more widely known pastors who we have discovered were living secret lives even while their ministries were experiencing tremendous success. We usually think hardship is when we are most spiritually vulnerable to compromise, but it seems like scripture and experience point to success, comfort, and entitlement as the true danger to our souls. In this podcast, James talks about how the slippery slope of success can become more stable ground. 14: All Pain Is A Potential Prison
Because we live in a broken world, the pain and hurt we experience from others is unavoidable. With all pain and hurt, comes the potential for bitterness and hatred toward those who hurt us. In this episode, we talk about the real struggle with pain caused by others and how it has the potential to transform into hatred. A deep seated hatred that makes the command of Jesus to forgive others seemingly impossible. We will discover that unforgiveness toward others isn't the unforgivable sin, but it is the imprisonable sin and with Jesus' grace, we can forgive and be set free.
