“Mindset is actually the greatest determiner of success, far more than skills or talents.”If there is anyone who's done a 180 degree turn on mindset, from thinking it was total nonsense to thinking it's absolutely everything, it’s ME. I clearly remember the days I would think I don't have any limiting beliefs. Boy was I wrong. But the great news here is that it’s completely possible to change that. In fact, it’s imperative that you do. In my experience, mindset will get you further than skills or talents ever could. Mindset encompasses things like personal leadership and self-management, and your ability to get things done, resilience, belief in yourself, positivity, all kinds of things. In preparing for today's episode, I went through dozens of past episodes, out of the 200 total, that are dedicated purely to mindset – dozens. So it was hard for me to select just a few of them, but these are the ones that I felt were the most essential listening on this topic. We're going to cover self-sabotage, productivity tips, getting what you want and making yourself happy. An escalation clause is a sophisticated pricing strategy, so this is an advanced episode. I break down what an escalation clause is (and is not), why you want to use one, and how you present an escalation to clients. And so knowing what's enough for you, it's a personal question and it's a really important question. Before you go asking others about your personal number, hold off. If you ask your peer group, everybody's going to have an opinion. If you ask your financial planner, they'll have some ideas for you. If you ask your partner or spouse, they're definitely going to weigh in. Even your parents might have a totally different idea. And if we follow what capitalism says, there's no such thing as enough. More is more, is more, is more. That kind of thinking can drive you until you're dead, if you allow that to happen. So we have to be really super aware...

“How do I know my genius zone is what people need? Find out what's out there, what they've tried, and whether you have a way to solve a problem that is relevant, resonates with them and makes sense.”This season, I’m answering listener questions. Today’s is: How do I know my genius zone is what people need and how do I find my offerings and hone them and simplify them? First of all, these are great questions. I'm going to share with you some various ways that you can figure out what your genius is, and how it aligns and compares to what’s out there. And then, specifically, share how to know which parts to turn into in-demand offerings.Before we dive in, I want to acknowledge that your uncertainty is what makes being a consultant scary. Do people need what I do? Does the market need it? Are there gaps? Figuring out what's available in the market from others is a natural part of self-discovery and also market research. Take time to network with other consultants to find out who's out there and what they're offering. That will help you get not just an eye into what the market is and what's available, but also connect you to other people who are doing the work. They’ll reflect back to you what’s possible, as well as the unique part of your genius to tap into. Pro tip: If you meet someone doing something completely different, it doesn’t mean your idea is wrong, it means there's space for you to do your thing. You might meet others doing what you do, but they'll never be doing it how you're doing it. There's no one else who is you! How to Avoid 4 AM Freak-outs
“Freak-outs are going to happen whenever you're susceptible to that irrational, fear-based voice.”Do you get the 4:00 AM freak-outs? “Oh my God, there's not enough money. That client's going to fire me. Am I healthy? Am I sick? Is the world going to end?” Let's talk about how to get your brain under control so you can get good sleep and build your business.Being woken up at 4:00 AM (or insert your own freak-out time here) is so disruptive to our daily lives; it’s pointing to an issue that really wants to get our attention. It can happen while you’re sleeping, or even while meditating, driving, or when you’ve just sat down for a little bit of peaceful time. It wasn’t that long ago when I would have these periodic meltdowns with my husband where I would just say, “We're not going to be able to pay the bills. There's not enough money and the roof is going to fall in (our chosen metaphor for the time period).” One day, he finally called me out saying, “While you keep saying the roof is going to fall in, I can't help but notice that it's been literally years and the roof hasn't fallen in yet.” That, for some reason, broke the spell for me and I learned the tools to face the freak-outs head on. I would love to teach you the tools so you, too, can stop losing sleep and start building a better mindset. “I want you to think of referrals as a bonus - a gift from the Universe. They’re a gift from people who are around you.”Season 18 is all about answering your questions. I really enjoyed this one: “My frustration is growing referrals without hounding my clients. I ask annually or immediately after we hit a success milestone. I still need more referrals. Surprisingly, they do not provide many. I send them a list of their connections on LinkedIn to generate initial ideas, but they seldom turn out to be solid referrals. There was a time when I thought there was a huge dichotomy between consulting and coaching.What's the difference between coaching and consulting? Is there any? I've always ignored this question really, because … so what? I just didn't think it was that important. But today I'm answering it because (a) so many people ask me about it, and (b) there are some exciting developments in both professions that we should be talking about!So which am I: A coach or a consultant? For years, I always said consultant. I came out of corporate like a lot of consultants. I had a background and expertise that companies found valuable. Maybe they wanted to grow their businesses with a Coca-Cola-style approach or framework. I also believed that because I was more prescriptive, telling clients directly what they needed to do, that my work fell under the consulting umbrella rather than coaching. Also, there wasn’t really coaching back then! But things have changed in the past two decades.
