Currently on a promotional tour in China, I was lucky enough to sit down with the very popular Serbian Cellist Jela Cello. Seeing her perform in Shanghai that night was an amazing experience. Right from a young age, Jela was the top students in Belgrade and won numerous awards, being titled the best student of her generation. She was awarded the Golden Shield and Golden Charter awards for her contributions to Cultural and Educational Community for Serbia. Her album Clash was released in 2012 and featured a composition of Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze" and as of today has had 1.5 million downloads on Youtube (which you can hear at the start of the podcast).. She formed a 60 piece Orchestra called "Jela Cello Power Symphony Orchestra". She has collaborated with front man of Journey Arnel Pineda recording the Christmas Dreams album. Episode 125 - On the night of Syren's Album Release Show, I sat down with Thomas- Guitarist and Steven- Drums. The band is currently on tour in China promoting their new album “Manifest.” They have played in Guangzhou, Beijing, Xi’an, and this weekend will perform at the popular Shanghai Calling festival.  The 2 songs we heard on the podcast were Emile and Maria, both from the new album. The band formed in late 2020 and have released animated film clips on board the RMS White Star, and have also released acoustic versions of the songs on the EP “Marooned”. Its an absolute honour to welcome to the podcast founding member of arguably the biggest Australian rock band in the early 90's, and one of my all time favourite bands, Guitarist Dave Leslie. (The first album I ever bought was Baby Animals). Dave was born in Sydney Australia, he learnt guitar at the early age before playing in some local bands. He formed the Cold Chisel tribute band Swing Shift and gained a large following. After trying out for Rose Tattoo, he was later asked to try out for a new band with Suzi DeMarchi on vocals. Soon after they formed Baby Animals and brought out their debut self titled album. The album went x4 Platinum and went Number 1 in the ARIA Charts. The band won 3 ARIA Awards- Best Debut Single "Early Warning" , Best Debut Album, Best Break Through Band. The band toured the world with Bryan Adams, Van Halen and Robert Plant. Baby Animals broke up in 1996 and Dave then played guitar for Australian Rock Icons- Jimmy Barnes and Richard Clapton. The band reformed in 2007 to the high anticipated reunion tour. For over a decade, he has been the leading figure in American Folk Music in China, using his music to bridge the gap in the cultural divides and create positive energy when playing live. 2016 he was awarded a full grant from the US State Department of Cultural programming in China. Kirk has recorded on Fiddle, Guitar, Banjo and Dulcimer and has played with bands The Hutong Yellow, The Mountain High, China first old time square dance band, China's "Poet Rocket/ Zhang Chu" and recording with Rockabilly group "Rolling Bowling. He has also performed with the JZ band. Kirk is an avid music educator, coordinating international musicians visiting China and organises music camps and events.
