Yolanda Canny

Each week we explore Womanhood and Leadership with the goal to question the status quo and challenge our thinking so we celebrate every woman as a leader. Our episodes will interview leaders in the field, meet authors, explore books on the subject, hear inspiring stories, or talk with organizations leading the charge for women to lead. We’ll look at the different topics from different generational perspectives as my daughters, a Millennial and a Gen Z, will join me, a Boomer, from time to time. We hope to make you laugh and leave inspired as you hear our voices on this very important topic. read less

149. Turning Pain into Purpose: The Origin of Blue Faery with Andrea Wilson Woods
Andrea Wilson Woods, Gen X, joins Yo to discuss the book she’s edited: I’d Rather Be Dead than Deaf. The book is the journal of Adrienne Wilson, a teenage artist, poet, and Andrea’s beloved sister. Before her death from liver cancer at the age of fifteen, Adrienne expressed her funny, bright soul in this prolific journal. Her musings on life, relationships, music, love, and the beautiful grime of her adopted hometown of Los Angeles leap off the page; her deep sensitivity and perspective are captured in full-color prints of her award-winning artwork. We will all relate to their love story! Andrea is a keynote speaker, a writer who loves to tell stories, and a patient advocate who founded the nonprofit Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association. For over ten years, Andrea worked in the education field as a teacher and professor for public and private schools as well as universities. Andrea obtained her master’s degree in professional writing from the University of Southern California; her nonfiction writing has won national awards. Her best-selling and award-winning book, Better Off Bald: A Life in 147 Days, is a medical memoir about raising and losing her sister to liver cancer.  Here are the topics we covered:       Blue Faery Foundation’s mission     Misconceptions around liver cancer       Adrienne’s view of herself as a leader      Challenging the common sense view of grief     Lessons learned leading Blue Faery        Advice for different generations Here are the three takeaways from the series: 1.   Adrienne didn’t see herself as leader but she is taking the lead to teach us about cancer and death through her art and poetry. 2.  Grief isn’t linear or predictable – It took Andrea 17 years to be angry. 3.   Liver cancer is filled with misconceptions with resources lacking to support patients, especially women, and Andrea’s book provides a voice from a patient to patients. 146. Part 2: Power & Relationships Insights from Peter Yaholkovsky and Sue Staker
This is Part 2 of a 2-Part Series: Peter Yaholkovsky and his partner in life, Sue Staker, Boomers, join Yo to discuss Peter’s book, Listening for Candor: Building Trust in Relationships that Matter, which illuminates a path for trust conversations by starting with a shared sense of what matters. Peter has an extensive background in the linguistic foundations of trust and communication, having studied and worked with Dr. Fernando Flores since the 1980's and being certified by the Strozzi Institute as a Master Somatic Coach. Over the past three decades, Peter has coached families and executive teams in building and restoring trust. In addition to being life partners for 25 years, Peter and Sue worked together as part of the Williams Group team to bring trust building skills to wealthy families. Here are the topics we covered in this 2-part series:       What is candor and how can it build trust with others?        What is the role that emotionality and intention play in relationships?    How does trust differ in personal and professional settings?    What does power have to do with listening with candor?       What elements need to be present to “save” a relationship and when to let it go? Here are the three takeaways from the series: 1.   The “truth” of Candor is sincerity about one’s intention and care—about ‘what matters’—a departure from speaking “honestly” or being “right” about the past. 2.   Sincere engagement is to want to understand another more fully. 3.   Vulnerability to a power differential can wreak havoc in conversations when “what matters” is protecting oneself from the risks of engagement.  As Mentioned:  Peter’s book: Listening for Candor: Building Trust in Relationships that Matter   The Williams Group: https://www.thewilliamsgroup.org/ Dr. Fernando Flores: https://conversationsforaction.com/fernando-flores Strozzi Institute: https://strozziinstitute.com/   More About Peter & Sue: Prior to his consulting career, Peter practiced Internal Medicine as a Board Certified Internist after graduating from Stanford University and UC Davis Medical School. 141. Unlocking Your Potential: Insights About Energy & Emotions from 'Becoming Supernatural’ by Dr. Joe Dispenza
In this “Girl, Take the Lead!” Sound Bite, we continued to explore the field of energy by digging into the book, 'Becoming Supernatural’ by Dr. Joe Dispenza,   Here are the three takeaways from today’s episode: 1.   Embracing Multidisciplinary Knowledge: Dr. Dispenza's work draws from diverse scientific fields such as epigenetics, molecular biology, neurocardiology, and quantum physics. By synthesizing insights from these disciplines, he offers a holistic understanding of human potential and empowerment, transcending traditional boundaries between scientific thinking and human experience.   2.   Becoming Supernatural: The concept of "becoming supernatural" involves transcending the limitations of the physical world by tapping into the innate potential of the human mind and consciousness. Through practices like meditation, mindfulness, and aligning with the quantum field, individuals can access higher states of consciousness and influence their reality.   3.   Clear Intention and Elevated Emotion: Dr. Dispenza emphasizes the importance of combining clear intention with elevated emotion as a powerful tool for manifesting desired outcomes. Clear intention involves having a specific goal in mind, while elevated emotions such as love, joy, and gratitude align with higher frequencies of the universe. By aligning intention and emotion, individuals can create a coherent state of being conducive to manifesting their desires and shaping their reality.   As Mentioned:   Dr. Joe Dispenza’s book: Becoming Supernatural   Ep 139, Energy Leadership w Brandy Mabra   Ep 140, From Victim to Creator: A Deep Dive into the Book, ‘Energy Leadership’   How to Reach Yo Canny: Our website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. 135. Unleashing Creative Brilliance: A Conversation with Lane Gardner
Lane Gardner, Gen X, Speaker, Author, Coach, Singer/Songwriter joins Yo to talk about her book, Lifeline, Recovering your Mental Wellness through Uncovering Your Creative Brilliance. Lane is devoted to guiding individuals to discover their authentic selves through creative expression. She’s crafted Self-Mastery Tools for mental wellness, empowering others to embrace life with joy, creativity, and the freedom to be you. Despite a tumultuous start marked by the fallout of her father's PTSD, her family's involvement in a religious cult, and the challenges of an abusive stepparent, Lane found solace and inspiration in her family's rich musical tradition. Lane discovered her own gifts at age 9, excelling in singing and finding refuge in the local community theater. After being invited to work with students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida after the horrific mass shooting at their school in 2018, Lane knew she needed to mobilize a new mission to foster connection and healing within communities by transforming individual and collective trauma into original works of art. She founded a therapeutic arts non-profit organization THREAD, brings the healing power of creative expression to individuals and communities living in and with trauma. Through arts centered and therapeutic workshops, THREAD serves the needs of survivors of abuse, those struggling with addiction and mental health, cancer survivors, incarcerated men and women, veterans, and those impacted by inequality and discrimination of any kind.   Here are the three takeaways from today’s episode: 1.   We already have everything we need inside us to navigate the ups and downs of life and find greater fulfillment by aligning more with our fullest selves.    2.   Our one-of-a-kind, unique creative expression is the perfect toolbox for each of us, opening a direct line to all the inner-resources, assets, skills for everyday mental wellness and deep healing.    3.   Accessing our inner creative brilliance isn't about feeling pressure to be an "artist", it's a pathway to self-discovery, healing and fulfillment.    As Mentioned: Lane’s Book: Lifeline: Recovering Your Mental Wellness Through Uncovering Your Creative Brilliance Parkland Shooting Hear Me Out (written by students living in the aftermath of the February 14th, 2018 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, FL) Inner Critic Ep 126   More About Lane: As Lane facilitated programs for others, she concurrently unraveled her own journey, gradually healing from early traumas. Shifting from finding solace on the stage to delving into her own stories, Lane embraced songwriting as a powerful form of self-expression. This transformative process culminated in her debut album, "Fertile Ground," released in 2015 on her record label, Third Road Records. Her life experiences uniquely equip her to guide others through a journey of SELF discovery. Lane Gardner is not just a witness to the transformative power of the arts but a living embodiment of its profound impact on personal growth and healing. 134. Friendship Realities: Fizzles, Changes, and Coping Strategies
This episode continues our conversation about Friendships started in Ep 131 with NoorJehan Tourte and continued for the next 2 episodes. This episode explores why friendships end and how we can cope with their loss. Here are the three takeaways from today’s episode: 1.    When friendships end there can be potential pain and shame, especially when there is a lack of clarity or closure. 2.    Open communication can help maintain friendships and we can address changes in communication patterns, express concerns, and be willing to have difficult conversations can potentially save a friendship. The idea that "friendships heal by making the unsaid said" underscores the importance of discussing issues rather than silently withdrawing. 3.    We need to normalize ending friendships as an aspect of life allow ourselves to experience and express a range of emotions, including grief and we need to exam our own contributions to friendship dynamics.   As Mentioned   “Why friendships end and how to cope” Ep 131 True to You: Embracing Authenticity in Friendships with NoorJehan Ep 132 Beyond 9 to 5: The Unexpected Magic of Work Friendships Ep 133 Laugh, Listen, Love: The Art of Being a True Friend Brené Brown, Atlas of the Heart.
